Joe: As you noted, several children of Heinrich Sehi (1791-1859) came to America and settled, for the most part, in the Midwest. I am descended from Heinrich’s brother Michael Sehi (born 1783), several of whose children came to America and settled, for the most part, in Brooklyn, NY. One of Michael’s children was Barbara Sehi, my great-grandmother. Early in my research on the Sehis, I was in touch with Mark Kingery from Montrose, Illinois, who knows a great deal about Heinrich’s descendants. At that time, there seemed to be quite a bit of genealogical information about Heinrich’s descendants but not much about Michael’s.

However, this past December, I was notified that marriage records at Most Holy Trinity Church from mid-19th century Williamsburg are being translated and will be available for genealogical study. The initial records show the marriages of Barbara Sehi to Anton Herrlein in 1849, her sister Margaretha (with whom Barbara came to America) to Johann Bettinger in1850, her sister Maria Eva to Heinrich Schreiner in 1854, and her youngest sibling Francis (Franz in the German records) to Maria Hammel in 1864. Work on the baptismal records is just now getting underway.

One of the puzzles with which I have been wrestling concerns a Peter Sehy, the first husband of Margaretha Schamuer (or Schandel), They had at least two children, Margaretha Sehy (born December 1860 in Brooklyn) and Johann Sehi (born about 1862). They may have had an older son Henry (born 1852). Either Peter Sehi died or he and Margaretha Schamuer/Schandel divorced. She married a second time, to a George Deck, and they raised her two Sehy children Margaretha and Johann plus a daughter by her second husband. I have no further information about her first husband Peter Sehy.

The only Peter Sehi I know of in the generation of Heinrich and Micheal’s children is Heinrich’s son Peter (born 1832), who may have arrived in New York on November 10, 1851. I do not have any information about him after he came to America, and I wonder if you know what happened to him. Might he have been the first husband of Margaretha Schamuer/Schandel?
