Robert A. Scypinski
Longtime Erie teacher and administrator Robert A. Scypinski, 86, of Millcreek, passed away Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at St. Vincent Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born in Erie,PA, July 24, 1925
he was a son of the late Andrew and Victoria D. Wiercinski Scypinski. He graduated from St. Stan's and East High in 1943. He served in the Army Air Corp in New Guinea until the end of the World War II and earned a Purple Heart. Bob returned to earn a BA at Gannon and his ME from Allegheny College. He received his administrative certification at SUNY Fredonia. Bob taught at Kanty Prep in 1951 and 1952 and then joined the Erie School district. He taught at Roosevelt and then A.P. English at Strong Vincent. He then was named assistant principal at Tech Memorial, then coordinator of Language Arts for the district. He retired as principal from Gridley Junior High in 1990. His first love was his wife, children, and grandchildren. He and Mary Margaret were members of St. Peter Cathedral for 51 years and he served as an usher and on Parish Council. He was a voracious reader and culinary connoisseur. He loved classical movies and was a jack-of-all trades. When he wasn't teaching he was building, painting and decorating. He was a member of the Maennerchor and the P.S.E.A. and the N.E.A. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Frederick Scypinski. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mary Margaret Wood Scypinski; four children, David Scypinski, wife Peggy, of Washington, D.C.; Rob Scypinski of San Francisco, Lisa T. Rosenthal, husband Rob, Erie and Anne V. Hardner, husband Kyle, of Erie; seven grandchildren, Kelly, Jeffrey and Colleen Scypinski, Benjamin Rosenthal and Nicholas, Lauren and Rachel Hardner. Calling hours at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th at Greengarden, Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services there Saturday at 10:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter Cathedral at 11:00 a.m. Entombment at Calvary Mausoleum. Memorials to St. Peter Cathedral.
