Hoping some of you out there can shed some light on my brick wall ....
My ancestor Caleb Scofield b. 1754 (whose family was most likely from Stamford, Fairfield, CT ) is listed in the 1790 & 1800 Newtown, Queens Co., NY census. It is believed he had a son named Caleb, among his children that show on the census. This presumed son Caleb b. 1773 came to Ohio sometime bef June 1817, after serving as a private in the Company commanded by Captain Wm. Dunscum in the regiment of NY Militia commanded by Col. Van Hook In the War of 1812. Caleb m. in 1805 NYC to Margaret Prosser.
He was a cooper. About 1820-1830 he built a home in Green Twp, Hamilton Co., OH and was a farmer, where he raised his large family. Several of his children intermarried with descendants of the SCUDDERS who also came to Green Twp. and it seems there are many other family names from Newtown, Queens, NY who came to Hamilton Co., OH. (Ref: Annals of Newtown, Queens, NY.)
Did these men get warrants for land in OH for their service in the War of 1812 ? Or is this just a coincidence?
Any ideas, advice on sources for history in Newtown, Queens Co., NY at this time would be greatly appreciated.
