Notes for JOHN GRAIHLE:
John Grayle (or Graile), puritan minister, was the son of John Grayle, priest, of Stone, Gloucestershire, where he was born in 1614. At the age of eighteen he entered Magdalen Hall, Oxford, as a batler, and proceeded B.A. in 1634 and M.A. on 15 Jun 1637. Wood states that in 1645 he succeeded George Holmes as master of the free school, Guildford, but this is erroneous. The John Grayle who then became master held the post until his death, at the age of eighty-eight, in January 1697/8, and was buried in Guildford Church (AUBREY, History of Surrey, iii, 502). Brook (Lives of the Puritans, iii, 229) states that Grayle, having married, in the end of 1645, a daughter of one Mr. Henry Scudder, went in the next year, probably as minister, to live at Collingbourne-Ducis, Wiltshire. He subsequently became rector of Tidworth in the same county, 'where,' says Wood, 'he was much followed by the precise and godly party.' He was a man of much erudition, and a 'pious, faithful, and laborious minister,' much beloved by his parishioners. While a strict
presbyterian Grayle as apparently charged with Arminianism The preface (dated 15 Sept. 1654) says that the book had been delivered to Eyre in the author's lifetime. Grayle died, aged 40, early in 1654. after a lingering illness. He was buried in Tidworth Church, and a neighbouring minister, Dr. Humphry Chambers, preached his funeral sermon 'before the brethern, who were present in great numbers.' It is published with the 'Modest Vindication.' A son of the same names, educated at Exeter College, Oxford, was rector of Blickling, Norfolk, and published many sermons." [Wood's Athenae Oxon. (Bliss), iii, 362, iv, 501.]

Later some of the families went to Jamaica, L.I. to reside.Thomas owned land there in 1654. He sold it in 1656 to move, apparently spending a year or more in Babylon, Long Island before settling in Huntington [Charles Moore, TOWN OF SOUTHOLD (New York: n.pub., 1868), p. 36]. The first record of Thomas in Huntington is in 17 October 1660, when he brought suit for 100 pounds against Edward Higby for defamation of character (Thomas won the suit but received only 20 pounds in damages). In 1668, Thomas was chosen Town Constable. He settled "by the waterside" of Huntington Bay, possibly on the site of the "Old House at the Inlet" near the junction of present New York and Park avenues, Huntington. Thomas' tanning mills faced the water in the area now called Tanyard Lane. Here, leather was cured and sent by wagon to a drum factory on Rogues Path to be transformed into drums for military use all over the world. Thomas, over a period of time, acquired some one thousand acres of land, including land previously acquired in Babylon, most of it along the
Huntington Bay waterside, but some extending well up into the hills from the shore. He also purchased land eastward to Cow Harbor and Crabmeadow, now Northport. In his will, dated 2 December 1686, he left most of his property, real and personal, to be divided equally between his widow, Mary, and his third son, Benjamin. To his oldest son, Timothy, he left valuable property at Babylon, Cow Harbor, North Point, Red Hook, Vernon Valley, and at Crabmeadow.

And to my sons Jacob and Moses I leave 1/2 of a €100 right in the same. I make my wife Mary and Daniel Kelly, executors.

Benjamin was a prosperous mill owner in Huntington. No record of the date of
his birth has been found; but, based on the date of the birth of his oldest
child (1698), he probably was born about 1670/74 in Huntington, where his
father had settled by 1660. Upon his father's death 14 November 1690, Benjamin
[appointed co-executor of the estate along with his mother, Mary Ludlam]
inherited most of his father's real and personal property in Huntington, which
included the family homesite 'by the waterside' and all or most of his father's
mills, also on the shore of Long Island Sound.

Banjamin Scudder II, moved with his family from said Long Island to Raway, Essex Co., N.J., and bought the lands and mills of Joseph Raley, May 1740."

Jacob was a prosperous and influential Huntington mill owner, expanding his holdings from the base of a one-half share of his father's mill left to him in the will. he purchased a complex of mill properties on the Millstone River known as the Aqueduct Mills from members of the Davison family. The mills, later called
Scudder's Mills, were located on Princeton's Harrison Street, extended to approximately where present US Route 1 crosses the Millstone at the edge of Carnegie Lake. In 1749, the property consisted of two grist mills, a millpond and dam, a fulling mill, a mill house, and 100 acres of land, for which Jacob paid 1,400 pounds, then a large sum of money. In early 1749, Jacob Scudder sold his mills and other real estate there and moved to New Jersey, buying a tract of 100 acres not far from Princeton.
