Classification: Query
Surnames: Scobbie / Scobie
The oldest information I have from my cousin, Margaret Mitchell, who did the original research. Shortly I'll be seeing what I can find out online at scotlandspeople from the old parish records, and from "Scobie" deaths, esp John below.

is

Andrew ?Scobbie or ?Scobie b. 19 Jul 1756 Wester Braco, Lanark, Scotland.

Jim Dick's tree starts here too:

http://www.jdick.net/genealogy/family_tree/Generations/Gener...
where he says

"Andrew SCOBIE

Andrew was born on July 29, 1756 in Wester Braco, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. The date and place come from the Scobie Family Bible and I don't yet know anything else about him - including his wife or parents. However, he did have at least one son, John Scobie, who was born in 1779.

I can surmise that Andrew married about 1776 and died around 1860."

I've just done a quick search and note that there are some Braco place names north of Stirling, in Perthshire, not Lanark, so perhaps this is the Perthshire connection with perth scobbies. But there are quite a few places called Braco. Maybe a connection there? There are a lot of Slamannan Scobbies online and it is only a few km north, so there must surely be a connection there.

The Shotts Old Parish Records as reported online show there was a Wester Braco or Bracco in Shotts, Lanarkshire in 1823:

http://web.ukonline.co.uk/scotlandgenealogy/ShottsOPR07.htm
or
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/LANARK/2001-07/09943713...

The 1823 one says
July 4th "To David Carrick Buchanan Esqr for the Lands of Wester Braco" So presumably the 1756 Wester Braco was this one.

Wester Braco is now the name of a farm north of salsburgh
in the Kirk o Shotts area.

Andrew married Margaret Marshall.

They had at least Two children, sons, John and William.

John b. 26 sept 1779 d. 10 mar 1858 (my ancestor and Jim Dick's too, who has posted here, and see the link above for info from his Family bible)
William b. 1780 or 1781, d. 13 Dec 1857.

No death certificate for the latter under Scobbie so is he spelt Scobie?
John's death cert. has "bb", so I spotted it already.
1858 SCOBBIE JOHN (MARSHALL M) age 78 HOLYTOWN LANARK GROS: 625/02 0055

Note that the bb/b thing may precede any family feud about coal mining vs. farming.
