Wow!! Finally, a reply 15 years after my original post!!

Hello Ron. This is Doug Schwalm (name in FROM block above is my son Chris). I was Born and raised in South Hadley. I am now 54 years old (ouch, hurts just typing that number :-))

If you are related to a man named "Robert Schwalm" (Chicopee, I think lifelong Chicopee resident), I have all of the answers you are looking for. We (the western Mass. Schwalm clan did not have contact with "Robert" because he was born out of wedlock, and his mother took him away with no further contact with his biological father. . A long story I only learned about after much questions of older family members.

I remember growing up in South Hadley as a kid and I would see the name ROBERT SCHWALM in the phone book and would ask my mom "WHO IS ROBERT SCHWALM?" She never would, or could not, answer that question. But, my son and I figured it out.

May I ask: What is your fathers name? Mothers name? Grand fathers name?

FYI: I live in Washington D.C. now.

Here is my private email: douglasgschwalm@hotmail.com

If you are a SCHWALM and grew up in western mass ...... YOU ARE RELATED TO US.

My son Chris and I have done a complete and very thorough investigation and SCHWALM FAMILY TREE. My info is solid.

Most Respectfully,
Doug Schwalm
P.S. I applaud you for seeking out your ancestry

August Schwalm 32nd 121st F. A. Bat. A Milwaukee WW1 Photo

Since photos are sometimes nonexistent or hard to find for the older relatives if I come across one during my searches and the person isn't related I will still try to find someone who has them in their tree and let them know where to find it.

I found a nice one for an August Schwalm from Milwaukee, Wisconsin at the 1922 reunion parade, in Madison, WI, for the 32nd Red Arrow "Les Terribles" unit. What I can't find is anyone really researching him who may want the article and photo of him for their tree.

So, it's at newspaperarchive.com in the Madison Wisconsin State Journal August 29, 1922 edition on the front and second pages. The photo is on page 2 far right second photo down and he's the one in uniform.

Henry Schwalm of Penn.
Henry Schwalm

Henry Schwalm, proprietor of the Mansion House, Hanover, Penn., was born September 24, 1842, in Kurhessen, Germany, and is the elder of two children born to Henry and Anna M. (Nau) Schwalm, also natives of Germany. Henry received a good German education. He immigrated to America, landing at Baltimore, May 25, 1868, and two days after came to Hanover, where he has since resided. He is a tanner by trade, and worked for one man fourteen years, and quit the trade and embarked in the hotel business. He had owned and managed a restaurant for seventeen months, after which he sold out and purchased the good will and fixtures of the “Mansion House,” his present stand, where he is now doing a flourishing business. He was united in marriage to Miss. Elizabeth Stutz in 1867. Five children have blessed this happy union: John H., Harry (deceased), George E. (deceased), Mary E. and Alice G. He and his wife are both members of the Reformed Church, He is a member of the Friendly Circle No. 19, B. U. (H. F.) of Hanover Lodge No. 318, K. of P., and of Minnewaukuru Tribe No. 250, I. O. of R. M. He was constable of Hanover from 1876 to 1880, the last year police of the borough. In politics he is a Republican, takes great interest in educational matters, and is a liberal, public spirited citizen.

Taken from the book, “History of York County, Illustrated 1886” by John Gibson, Historical Editor

Dorothea lived with my grandmother and grandfather while my father, BIll Zielske, was growing up in central Iowa. Dorothea and Jakob had 9 children - Sue, Margaret Mcglaughlin (Mason City, Iowa), Heinie, Fred, Peter are all I can remember right now. Dorothy (the youngest) is still alive although over 90 years old and still resides in Sioux Falls, SD. Dorothy is the one with all the info on the family, I'm sure. My mother (who is 80) still writes Dorothy regularly.

Dorothea lived with my grandparents in Eldora, Iowa, and was still alive when I was a young child. My great-aunt Dorothy, who is well over ninety and still resides in Sioux Falls, SD, is the youngest child of Dorothea and Jakob. I do have photos of Dorothea, and I believe I also have a photo of Jakob. I will contact my mother, who still communicates with my aunt Dorothy, and try to find out more information about Dorothea's parents and grandparents.

No, I am not Evelyn. She is probably Evelyn, the daughter of Heinie and Rose Gaubatz. Sue was my grandmother's sister (and Heinie was her brother). My grandmother was Christina, married to Ed Zielske. Their Son, Bill, was my father. I am Carol, daughter of Bill and Beulah. I remember the Martino's. They used to visit my grandparents when I was a child. Sue and Clyde were my great-aunt and uncle. Sue's brothers and sisters were Peter, Christina, Fred, Heinie, Dorothy, Jack, Margaret. Sue and Heinie went from Iowa to Chicago. Peter's family lived in Missouiri. Fred and Jack lived near Mason City near Margaret and her husband Joe. Of course, Dorothy lived in SD and my grandmother lived in Eldora, Iowa.

Carol

I think the 1920 census shows Paul SCHWALM (b 1892) with Grace (MAXWELL) and 3 kids (H,T,C) at 92 Loyal Way (?) near Arlington and Knox. In 1930, Grace was married to John FLANIGAN (sometimes FLANNIGAN)) and living at 1731 St Patrick Street with her kids plus two of his own. His first wife, Mary Dumsky, had died in 1919.

Grace's parents are reported in WorldConnect by Ken Lyons, but he shows her first husband as Howard (no other details). John Flannigan's parents and siblings are also in WorldConnect (search for DUNSEY).
He was a driver for a florist.

1930 census shows John FLANNIGAN age 52,
at 1731 St Patrick St (between Arlington and 18th).
with Grace Catherine (MAXWELL-Schwalm) 37,
and seven children:
his: William age 19, and Leo 16,
hers: Howard 13, Thomas 11?, Catherine 10, Erma 8,
theirs: Regina age 1 (so they remarried in 1927-28?).

Ken Lyons' file in WorldConnect says Catherine had 3 girls and one boy, all still living. So there is a loose end with Howard or Thomas that someone closer to Pgh can straighten out.

John F's older daughter Marie later married Ed Busch,
and one of her grandkids told me that
William F. married his step-sister Catherine S., and
Leo F. married Margaret DIETHORN from Shamokin St.

My own angle? John Flannigan's first wife, Mary DUMSKY, was my grandfather's sister. John and Anna DUNSKY ("Bansky" in the census) lived at 1711 St Patrick St.
