A Schrimsher adoption

Classification: Query
Surnames: Schrimsher, Greenhaw
My great great grandfather was John (Johnny) Greenhaw born in 1867 and died in 1916.

In 1878 he was adopted by a James and Nancy Schrimsher. In the 1880 census of Limestone County, AL, he was listed as their son, he was 13 years old.

Johnny married Ella Cowan in 1885 and had many children. Three of those children had Schrimsher as their last name. (Ollie Schrimsher, George Edward Schrimsher, and Armen E. Schrimsher).

The rest of the children had Greenhaw listed as their last name (Minnie, Ordra, Connie, Mary Sue, and Coleman).

In the 1910 census of Limestone County, Johnny changed back to Greenhaw. James and Nancy Schrimsher lived next door to Johnny and Ella and their children in 1910. James and Nancy were 72 and 80 years old at this time.

I cannot find out about Johnny's parents, who they were and why he was adopted by the Schrimsher's.

If anyone has any information, please let me know. It would be a godsend to finally find out.

thank you,
Leah Brannon
