JOHN J. SCHNEIDERMEIER SR., DEAD.
One of Our Best Known German Citizens Dies at His Residence Friday After a Lingering Illness.
The announcement of the death of our well known citizen John J. Schneidermeier, will be learned of with little surprise by the many who have known of his serious illness for over eight months past. Death came to him while in a quiet slumber Friday at 1:30 o’clock p.m., at the family residence, 405 Arch Street. His trouble was of a dropsical character. He was in his eighty-second year.
Mr. Schneidermeier was born in the little town of Westerhohl, [sic. – Westerholdt], in the province of Westphalia, Germany. With his wife, formerly Mary Angela Wegescheide, of the same village, he came to this country in 1847, landing in New Orleans. From the “Crescent City” he went to that of “the mounds,” St. Louis. After a five years’ residence he came to Fort Madison where he has since continually resided.
The eldest son, Herman, was an infant when the then young people came to America. He resided for many years in Fort Madison but of late years has become a citizen of Cameron, Mo. He was so fortunate as to be present at his father’s death. Mrs. Mary Sieweka [sic.- Sieweke], a resident of Garnett, Kansas, is a daughter and John and Theresa, both residents of Fort Madison are also children, who with the wife and mother are left to remember him as a kind and good husband and parent.
The funeral occurred Sunday at the close vespers at St. Mary’s Church, the Rev. Father Kern officiating.
