Classification: Query
Surnames: Schmidt, Smith
I am looking for more information about Josephine and Charles Schmidt of Sullivan County, New York. They had 12 children. I have only been able to find 11. I have calculated this child was born and died between 1870-1880. I came to this conclusion based on Census Records. In the 1900 Census Record it lists the number of children born and then number living at the time of the census. They have 12 children as being born but only 11 living. In the 1910 Census states the same.

They were married in 1869 or 1870.

I have been able to find them on the 1880 Census and with the later Census Records all 11 children are accounted for. I have NOT been able to find Josephine and Charles on the 1870 Census. Both their parents can be found. But as of July 1870, neither Josephine and Charles were living with their parents. I do not know if this means they were married at this time or if they were both working outside of their homes.

I have done all the searching I can online through ancestry.com and other websites. Now I am hoping to find a living relative who can help shed some light onto this missing child. Is there a family bible or anything similar?

Charles parents were John M. and Maria M. Schmidt. Josephine's were Peter and Elizabeth Wagner. Their children and grandchildren and later generations changed the name Schmidt to Smith. I am assuming this baby/child that died between 1870-1880 had the surname of Schmidt as the children didn't change their name until adulthood.

Please contact me if you have information about Josephine and Charles unknown baby/child.

Thank you!
