Baptism/Confirmation documents for Elton Lester MERKLE, Wyoming Co., NY son of Eva SCHLENKER MERKLE

I found the Certificate of Baptism and the Confirmation certificate of Elton Lester MERKLE in an antique store in Dunkirk, Chautauqua Co., NY and purchased the two. I am trying to find the descendants of Elton so I can return the documents to the rightful family. The baptism record states Elton Lester MERKLE is the son of Floyd and Eva (SCHLENKER) MERKLE. The sponsors were Clayton MERKLE and Grace WOLF.

My mother-in-law wrote a book on the Schlenker's! Upstate New York area. It's called Schlenker Families, by Sandra Bortle Schlenker. It's a beautiful hard covered book with TONS of photos! Sandy passed away in 2009 and we have cases of them. She loved geneology and this book proves it. Contact me for more info.
Robie777@hotmail.com

Thanks!

sslanker,

What I would do is search the IGI for names like Christoffel, Daniel and Wilhelm Schlenker (var. spellings), and map them out. Families REGULARLY recycled the same names. Read how I did this and discovered the original town of my Betz ancestors here:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jillaine/pfalz

-- in particular the "chapter" called "Mormons and Jews join forces..."

-- Jillaine
Based on the given names of these individuals -- Christoffel, Friederich Wilhelm and Frans Heinrich, I can say with 95% certainty that they are NOT from Schwenningen. These names rarely if ever appear in Schwenningen. In fact, I'd say they are probably not from that region, but further afield.

At least you know where they are NOT from.

Best of luck to you.
Christoffell Schlencker came to Philadelphia on the 19th of September 1753 aboard the Ship "Leathley" with his six year old son Johannes. Also on the ship were Friedrich Wilhelm and Frans Heinrich Schlencker. They are believed to be Christoffell's brothers. Christoffell was born in 1715, perhaps Baden-Wurttenberg, Germany. I have been told that there is a high concentration of Schlencker families in Schwennigen. Johannes Schlencker who was born in 1747 was a Revolutionary soldier. There is also a spelling of Schlenker and Slanker, etc. names.

Württemberg was initially a "kingdom" in Germany. When these kingdoms or states united into what became Germany, it became a jurisdiction of sorts. I don't fully understand the details. Sometime in the early-ish 20th century it was "merged" with another jurisdiction/former kingdom-- Baden and is today referred to as Baden-Württemberg.

The town I was writing about-- Schwenningen-- was/is in Württemberg.

Do you know when they emigrated? And who the emigrating Schlenker was, and his approximate birth?

I have records from Schwenningen that go back to 1650, and I know people who have records from surrounding towns that go back into the 1500s.

Maybe I can help you find the German origins of your Schlenker family.

I believe we have some of the info you need! In our geneology records for Christoffel, we have a Daniel Schlenker (born 1825) who married Emmalina Angstadt. He served in the Civil War. They had twelve children:
Elenius Schlenker (born ?)
Catharine Elizabeth Schlenker (born 1853)
Jonathan Schlenker (born 1859)
Frank Slanker (born 1861) - had Etta, Frank & Edgar Slanker
Etta had Miriam & Betty Slanker
Rose Slanker (born ?)
Adam Slanker (born 1869) - had son Paul Slanker
C. Morris Angstadt (dropped Slanker, took mother's name)
Emma Slanker (born ?)
Five more children were born to Daniel & Emmalina that died in infancy, including a pair of twins.

The only Jacob I have is Jacob Sclenker who married Sarah Long - then later married Christina Dorwart.

There is no explanation as to why Schlenker changed to Slanker for latter part of the family.

Helen and Stephen Uurtamo
Hello, would anyone know if this line of (slankers) would have a son anywhere within the line named solomon who married Hannah Comstock Hatfield in 1848? I cannot find the correct line who solomons parents are and hopefully you may have this name somewhere within your tree. Solomon was born in Berk County, Pennsylvania from the Slankerville line from what I am told. Since I cannot confirm that line I am hoping someone may have solomon with any brothers or sisters we can followup on?? I have been searching since 2006. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am stopped with solomon. He and Anna married and moved to Michigan.

thanks - me email address is jtrautmann@sbcglobal.net No longer have an ancestry account.

SChECHT - live in Philadelphia, PA

sister - Susan, deceased, w/o Solomon SCHLENKER
her ch/ Daniel, Samuel, Catharine SCHLENKER
- all minors who live in Ohio

brother - George RIDENOUR (he and wife, both deceased)
his ch/ Elizabeth, Sophia, Catharine, Julia Ann, David
and Susanna RIDENOUR - all minors who live in Ohio

Real Estate consisted of the east half of Lot #10 in Clearspring and
all of Lot #24. Feidt and Grosh were creditors of David Ridenour.
Testimony was heard from Mrs. Rachel GARLINGER who claimed a daughter
of George Ridenour, either Elizabeth or Catharine, was married to a
man named RHOADS; the other's husband she cannot recall; but the sister
Elizabeth Schecht lives in Philadelphia. Thomas HARBINE also testified.
The last witness was Mrs. Elizabeth GEORGE who was a sister of Solomon
SCHLENKER. Thomas HARBINE was made trustee and on 15 Apr 1854 sold the
half of Lot #10, occupied by Mrs. WORLEY, to John EICHELBERGER for $115,
being the highest bidder. Lot #24, occupied by James DORRANCE as a
Cabinent Maker Shop, and Andrew WARNER as a shoemaker shop, was sold to
Jonathan SOOSE for $535 as highest bidder. The widow received 1/8 in
lieu of her dower, $81.25; it appears all the many creditors only received
a percentage of their claims; finalized 12 May 1855.
===============
<http://MidMdRoots.freewebspace.com/>
If you have a good clue as to where your mother was born, you could write to their city hall and request a copy of the birth certificate. Depending on the state you may have to provide a copy of your own to prove you are her daughter.

Ditto on your dad's side.

-- Jillaine
Dad was born in 1895 going by the age given on my birthcertificate. thats the only info on except his birth place was Bysville,Oh. Him and his brother Jack Lee were raised in an orphanage in Cinncinati,Oh. They ran away from there as 12 or 13yrs of age. Not much info, huh?

Regarding last post; actually I was going by information in old papers passed to my husband on old research. Since then , I have a few corrections
Th 1856 Iowa State Census for Clayton Co. Iowa shows
1.Schlenker, Gerhardt , male aged 59 ,farmer and landowner, widowed, born in Prussia, three yrs in Iowa
2.Feronika, female aged 9, born in Prussia, 3 yrs in Iowa
3. Balthasar, male aged 9 , born in Prussia , 3 yrs in Iowa
4. Jacob, male aged 7, born in Prussia, 3 yrs in Iowa

Iowa Federal Census for 1860-Clayton Co. Iowa Jefferson Township
1. Schlenker, Jerret male aged 55, farmer, born Prussia
2. Veronica, female aged 17, born Prussia
3.Balthasar, male aged 15, born Prussia
4. Jacob, male aged 13 born Prussia

TWO versions of why Gerhard is a widower- 1. his wife, Magdalena Wolfgarten-Schlenker (1804-1853) was she died while crossing the Atlantic ,on the way to America or
2. she died in Clayon Co., Iowa in 1853.

As for the Jerret , I have found no other reference to him so it could be Gerhard ...IF the age on the census for him is wrong too. the first census is correct as for the age....which is no doubt the case because ....
I have a copy of a photo which is of the Gerhard Schlenker farm, west of Guttenberg in Jefferson Township of Clayton County, Iowa and it says August Balthasar, Veronica and Jacob Schlenker lived there with their father from about 1853 to 1864.

Gerhard Schlenker was born Sept. 19,1797 and died Nov. 8, 1869 in Dubuque, Iowa.
Probate notices appeared in "Die Herald National Demokrat", a German language newspaper in Dubuque and the death date is on his gravestone.

I have much more on Gerhard and why he immigrated.,the trip , and more regarding the rest of the Schlenkers .
I can be contacted directly at oneamos@bellsouth.net
