Hi Phil,
Depending on how important the data is for your family history I would suggest to hire local help to do the search. My experience is that in all these local (Private) organisations is someone who is willing to take orders from interested parties (for a fee or donation). They have normally all the resources and know all the local authorities and people to get data. Many people from the U.S. have been doing this ,because it saves so much time and efforts. And from my experience they can look at the original data and know what is reliable.
I have found that a lot of data in the ancestry trees is faulty and doesn't give the sources of the data. These data are then copied into other trees and then taken as true.
Best wishes
Otmar

Mr. Jochum,

Thank you very much for the advice and the links. I have seen the tetti.de link and am confident it is relevant (but have yet to be able to link any of the persons identified to my tree). I am also at the point where I think I have exhausted the resources available on Ancestry.com and FamilySearch. I have been researching that information for about 2 years. So I think my next step will be to contact someone locally (such as the Bergischer Verein für Familienkunde).

Thanks again.

Phil

The other possibility is to contact a local organisation (Bergischer Verein für Familienkunde -www.bvff.de).They might be able to help you.
Regards
Otmar Jochum

Hello,

I am researching members of the Schaaf family that originated in Solingen, Germany (now in North Rhine-Westphalia). I believe I have exhausted the archives on Familysearch and ancestry.com (and since they do not make the images available, the information is not that helpful).

Here are the names. If anything rings a bell, or if you have some insights on other sources of records for this region in the pre-1880 time, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

- Johann Abraham Schaaf (b. likely 1775-1790) wed to Wilhelmine Fischer (same b. range)

- Children of the above:
1. Carl Friedrich Schaaf (b. 1812) wed to Sophie Bleul (b. 1820)
2. Rosalia Schaaf (b. 1814)
3. Henriette Schaaf (b. 1817)
4. Amalia Schaaf (b. 1819)
5. Emanuel Schaaf (b. 1822)
6. Gustav Schaaf (b. 1827)
7. Wilhelmine Schaaf (b. 1830)

- Children of parents identified in #1 above

8. Lydia Schaaf (b. 1854) wed Rudolph Hantusch (b. 1855)
9. Carl Friedrich Schaaf (b. 1842)
10. Friedrich A. Schaaf (b. 1843)
11. Bertha Schaaf (b. 1847)
12.

Hi Bernard,
Just stumbled across your postings searching for family members of Schaaf from Geiselberg.
My name is Otmar Jochum ,born 1943 in Heltersberg, neighbor village of Geiselberg. My mother is a born Schaaf. I have found lots of Schaafs from Geiselberg from different family lines.I have come back on my line to a Michael (Michel) Schaaf ,who was a miller at the Hirschalber Mühle (mill) between Geiselberg and Schmalenberg. The whole family seems to have been running different mills in the area.
I have found a source -reworked church books from the area which have been put together and sorted by name and church event. One author is Dietmar Meyer (from Schopp) who has published several books on that issue .The books are available at the" Zweibruecker Arbeitsgemeinschaft fuer Familienforschung".Can supply adress if wanted. They also help on such research ( maybe a donation helps). They have a small office in Zweibrücken (about 15 miles from Geiselberg) and have lots of knowledge of the families history and general history of the area.
By the way at the time Geiselberg belonged to Bavaria -later on this became Pfalz, respective Rheinland-Pfalz today.
The originals of the church books datin back to about 1660 rest in Speyer in the church archive. The mormons have copied all the filea on microfilm some yearts ago ,but I haven't been able to trace the content on family search.
I might be able to help you with some of your questions because I am planning to visit the Zweibrücken archive soon to find data on the Schaaf side of my family history.
Geiselberg belongs to an association of muncipalties and the registrars office is now in Waldfischbach.I have found that they are not very helpful and it takes ages to get an answer.Zweibruecken is probably a much better source.I have also found that there is a lot of stories on these families in local publications like year books ,but they are in German language. They contain a lot of background on the history of the area and migration to the States.
Let me know if I can be of help-we might even be related!!
Wish you all the best
Otmar

Schaaf Family Book Offer

I just came across an old letter that was written to my uncle, who is now deceased, back in 1993. It stated that there was a book about to be released called "The World Book of Schaafs", and they wanted him to order one. It was to include Schaafs who immigrated to the New World between the 18th and early 20th centuries. It said the first Schaaf they found was Johann Schaaf, who came to Philadelphia in 1737.
Does anyone know if this book was ever published? The return address was Family Book Offer out of Bath, Ohio.

SCHAAF Surname DNA Project

A DNA project has been launched for the Schaaf surname, along with any variations such as Schaff, Shoaf, etc. The project uses testing on the male Y chromosome which is passed directly down the paternal line from father to son making it ideal for investigating surname lineages. The testing can be used to uncover, prove, or disprove connections between various Schaaf lines and to also give clues about the deeper origins of the lineages.

Project participation is open to any direct paternal-line male Schaaf descendant - i.e., a male whose last name is Schaaf (or any variation of the surname) or a male whose biological paternal-line ancestry goes back to a Schaaf but whose last name was changed at some point, such as due to adoption. Even if you are not a direct paternal-line male Schaaf descendant, you can join the project by sponsoring the testing of a Schaaf male from your immediate or extended family, such as a brother, son, father, uncle, male cousin, distant male cousin, etc.

Feel free to visit the Schaaf-Shoaf project website for more details:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/shoaf/

Also, if you have already had Y-DNA testing done at Family Tree DNA, you can log into your account and use the Join Projects link to join the Schaaf-Shoaf project.

Mike
Project Administrator
Schaaf-Shoaf DNA Project
I have progressed in information about my x2g grandfather Frederick Schaaf. On his brother Julius' marriage record to Adelia Brass I have their parents as August Schaaf and Fredericke Heiermann. I have the for brother's being from Antewerpe Prussia, though Emil has one record listing Baden, Antewerpe. Not sure what that indicates. They where all Barbers in Camden City NJ from 1880's through 1930's. In the vicinity of Pine street and 3rd Street. Little information on Otto only 1920 census... Any help on this line of Schaafs would be greatly appreciated.

This family is in Henrico County, Virginia in the 1870, 1880 census.

Do you know where in Germany they came from? I have been looking at these two census records for years, wondering if they were connected to my family. My family originated in Marburg. I have family records from there, but some are incomplete.

Most of my Schaafs came to Richmond, Va. with a few exceptions that went to Louisiana and Ohio. We have heard some went farther west, but I have been unable to find them.

Carla Schaaf

carla12cat@verizon.net

Asolph Schaaf

My 2G grandfather Adolph Schaaf came to America in 1855, I first find him and his family on and Iowa state census by 1860 he's living in St Louis, Mo. and dies there in 1881. Adolph came with his wife Augusta Noecker and four children. Two of the children evidently died before 1860. Now according to family folklore two brothers also came with him. I don't believe they were married. I've never found Adolph's port of entry. The only thing it shows on the census is that they were from Prussia. One thing I have found is two men living in St Louis on the 1860 US census at the same place named Joe & Henry Schaaf. I've found their surname spelled Schoof, Schaf, Schaaff.
