Obituary for Hans T. Schaaf from The NONPAREIL on Wednesday, February 22, 1933 Avoca, Iowa
HOLD SERVICE$ FOR OLD AVOCA RESIDENT
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p. m. for Hans Schaaf, 77, long a resident of Avoca, who died Monday of complications. Rev. Joseph Gerit, Pastor of the First Evangelical church of Avoca, officiated. Burial was in the Avoca cemetery.
Born in Burbahrend [or Burbabrend] , Germany, he came to America in 1882, locating near Avoca. He is survived by his widow, Margaret; three sons, Alfred, Ben, and Johanus; two daughters, Mrs. Rudolph Peters and Mrs. Arthur Olsen, all living near Avoca, one sister and one brother.
Notes: Neither Burbahrend or Burbabrend causes Google to make a hit. According to the 1930 census, Hans had been born in "Deutschland; Holstein." I suspect that Burbahrend is Neuberend, which is a municipality in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg, in Schleswig-Holstein.
The 1930 census reported that Hans and Margaret spoke German as their mother tongue as did most of the people listed in their part of the census. Hans had no occupation; Ben was a truck driver. Avoca in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, is west of Atlantic in Cass County. Margaret Thede was Hans’ second wife; Christine Cober/Cover was his first wife; Christine’s name is sometimes reported as Cobin.
