Hi there: Just a curious notion of mine to search the name of Sbertoli and you folks popped up. My dad, John Sbertoli, Told me that he had a cousin that was a heart specialist that I think he said, practised at St. Francises' hospital in Evanston, IL. All I know is my dad said there were uncles of his around in NY. this is interesting to find others witht he name, because there are not too many and it is a distinctive name. wish I knew more about it. I heard they originally came from Genoa, Italy. the name was checked out at a college and it means little expert. the S stood for senator, or I should do it like this. S.Bertollus was a roman senator that represented Genoa. He is supposed to be the ancestor. When Rome fell, the senators went back home. They took the S and combined it with the rest of their name but changed the ending to an "li", thus Sbertoli. That much I found out. I know I have 3 relatives that are lawyers in IL. I checked the lawyers directory. My dad, John Sbertoli, his brother, Joesph and Edward have all passed recently. Marie Sbertoli Corsiglia is still alive at 94. If you have any more info please let me in on it. thanks, Maureen Sbertoli Jones

Hi Maureen,
I just found your message and found it interesting. I have studied our family name since your uncle Joe died in 1984. I have met your uncle Ed and aunt Jackie as well as your aunt Marie and shared my information with them. I know I have talked to your father back in the 80s. We may be able to help each other. Thanks, Dave Sbertoli

My grandfather, Maurice Sbertoli, was the Chief of Cardiology in Evanston, IL and he passed in 1964. My uncle, Thomas Sbertoli, is also a lawyer in Libertyville, IL. I have found that there are two main Sbertoli families in the Chicago area...related but can't remember the connection. I'll have to pull out my geneaology papers.

Surnames: Sbertoli, Bertoli
Hello
My name is Betsy (Bertoli) Brown. My family came from the Chicago area. Sometime around the late 1940's. My grandfather's name was Henry Anthony Bertoli (from Italy 1890) - son of John Sbertoli and Ida Lancaster? I have found original documents that our name was Sbertoli. A baptismal certificate from Church of the Assumption - Chicago, IL - dated 10/21/35. Sponsors were: Frances Sbertoli and Gerominia Sbertoli. Also mentioned were Romeo Sbertoli. My grandfathers obit mentioned the following: sister: Madeline Arado, brother Frank Sbertoli, Mary Caprini (?) and Amelia Arado(?). At his death (7/18/1946) he lived at 5746 N. Merrimac Avenue Chicago. If you can provide any info I would be THRILLED. I have struggled due to the name change.
Thanks,
Betsy Brown

Hi: Wow, I don't know of a person by the name of Lancaster. What I know is that my family lived on Parkside Avenue in Chicago. My grandfather and greatgrandfather both had the same name, Giovanni Sbertoli. My grandmother died when my dad and his 2 brothers and sister were young. So there was a lady by the name of Virginia Arado that came into the house and helped raise them. My fathers names was John Sbertoli, his brothers were Edward, Joseph and his sister was Marie Corsiglia (married name). They lived on Parkside Avenue in a 2 flat. I think Ascension Church was near them. My mom and dad were divorced when I was young so I didn't get to know them through the years when I was little. But after my mom passed my dad took my sister and me and raised us. My brother was older and had already gotten married. My father was very silent all the time and worked at South Water Market in Chicago. I think they owned part of a house called Batistini Bros, later changed to LaMantia but the family sold their part. I'm trying to think of connections that might help you. I know that there are 3 Sbertoli's that are lawyers in Illinois. They can be found if you look the name in the lawyers list. They were up North in Illinois. They have all passed away now. My brother is also John Sbertoli and lives on Marco Island, FL. My dad has many friends that he visited and played cards with but I never met them. They were close to the family if not cousins in Illinois. I'm surpirsed to hear that the name Bertoli was once Sbertoli. I often thought about it. I know that the letter S was placed before the name Bertollus, who was a Roman Senator way back. He was a Senator representing Genoa. When Rome went down, the Senators all went back to their towns, and changed their name by placing an S before their Roman name. But Bertollus was then changed also to Bertoli, thus Sbertoli. I found this out from a language teacher at a college my husband taught at in Chicago. It means "little expert". My sister went to Bella Noche, Italy. She said all the graves there were Sbertoli. They were people who settled from Germany and she met the last Sbertoli there. He looked like one of my cousins, a hugh man. They ate at a restaurant and it was something never to forget. The food was so delicious and made fresh. The woman who owned the restaurant with her husband was out in the field and came in to cook for them. My sister said you would not know it was a restaurant, but looked like a hugh garage door. When it opened, the most beautiful, classical Italian design could be found inside. My aunt, my fathes' sister said that she went to Genoa to seek out other Sbertoli's. My greatgrandfather, I am told came from Genoa, owned a fishing industry there and was a prof of math. He couldn't speak English though and when he came to America he worked at the south water market and then bought part of that house I mentioned above. I think he had 5 brothers also and it is probably a few of the brothers whose sons are the lawyers. I wish I could have been more involved. My family I always felt was very classy. I have seen some from Italy that were different. I'm just trying to give you some of my impessions. My name is Maureen (Sbertoli) Jones. I have 2 children. My sister who passed last year from ovarian cancer was Mary (Sbertoli) Anderson and lived in Wisconsin. She owned Martino's restaurant and had two spots at the summerfest. She had 3 children. My brother who is in FL had 8 children and most of them live in FL also. My dad was born in 1910 if that helps you figure all this out. I'm not sure of the others' birthdates. I think my grandmothers name was Virginia Briggi. I saw pictures of her and they are old. But she was young at the time and so beautiful. My number is 219-728-1354. I live in Indiana. Hope what I have given you is some help. Please send me more info about you and family if you can. I'm curious how the name Bertoli has been changed. I thought all my relatives somehow had the name Sbertoli which is not a common name. So I always figured every Sbertoli was a relative in the USA. But my sister visted Bella Noche, Italy and said there were so many graves with the name Sbertoli on them. Nice to hear from you. best wishes and if you have any more info let me know. Someone from NY called me one time after posting here, years ago. He gave me a rundown on the family in NY but I couldn't keep up with him. He had so many people there. And too the women in the Sbertoli family marry and change their name so who knows how many are out there. haha. Best wishes, Maureen

Hi Betsy,

I do have a geneology outline for the Sbertoli family that goes back 5 generations. I do recognize many of the names and villas in Italy mentioned in the conversation between you and Maureen. I will have to scan my documents and email it to both of you and it shouldn't be very helpful for you to connect the dots.
