Bellevue, Wash. — Wayne P. Sapel, 64, died on Jan. 31, 2001, in Bellevue, Wash.

He was born on April 9, 1936, in Plattsburgh, the son of the late Tida B. (Facteau) and Robert R. Sapel.

After enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1957, Wayne's outstanding 20-year military career included a tour of duty in Vietnam, where he received many honors, including two bronze stars. In 1972, he was selected the first "Pacific Fleet Sailor of the Year." After retiring in 1977, he worked with the U.S. Immigration Service in Seattle until his passing.

Devoted to his family, he is survived by his loving wife, Judy (Olmstead) of Bellevue; daughter, Cherise Crawford and husband John and grandchildren Caity and Joey Crawford; brother, Robert Sapel and wife Bernice of Plattsburgh; sister, Iona Sapel of Morrisonville and brother Russell Sapel and wife Holly of Puyallup, Wash.; brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Kathy Olmstead of Kirkland, Wash., Doug and JoAnn Bussa of Brinnon, Wash., and their families; and also many loving nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Wayne's special gift of love, laughter and friendship will be remembered by all.

A military service with honors was held Feb. 9, 2001, at the Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Wash., where he was buried. A Celebration of Life followed at Lake Wilderness Golf Club.

Donations may be made to cancer charities or others of your choice.

A memorial service will be held at Riverside Cemetery in the spring.
