My Great Great Grandfather was Stephen/Steven Semenuk/Samenuk, was born in 1853 in Russia and died in 1843 in California, he married Ann (Ruza) (Nee? Punasuk) in 1875 in Russia, she was born in 1854 also in Russia she died in 1914 in Benedict, ND and is buried there, they had lived in Odessa and he owned a produce dealership, Steven sold everything and left Russia in the late 1800’s just before the Revolution; paying passage and bringing with him four other families to America, they had promised that they would pay him back once they settled and established themselves in the new country. He applied for citizenship in 1902 and received citizenship in 1908. They settled in McLean County, North Dakota (Central North Dakota), later farming in a small town named Benedict. They supposedly paid their passage back to him after they got situated and working. He had eight girls and one boy all born in Odessa, Russia; we know that Nellie went back to Russia and was never heard from again. (per her niece -- Agnes Semenuk Perry) Sam moved to Canada, died of a heart attack while visiting his father and helping him in the barn. His wife and family came and brought him back to Canada and buried him there, they lived near Vancouver. The war broke out shortly after she returned and I don’t believe there was any more contact after that from Sam’s Family.

My Great Grandmother was Carrie Ann Samenuk born in 1889 in Odessa, Russia and moved with her family to the North Dakota. The 1920 Census indicates that she immigrated in 1899. She was woman before her time, her first husband George Rittle was killed by their hired hand leaving her with seven children to raise, then she remarried John Stephens and had two more children Dorothy and Ann, their father John of died of Cancer 3 days after my Grandmother Ann was born, she was born July 19, 1919. Steven lived with them until Carries 2 sisters came and got him and took him to California, he was heart broken, and he really missed the farm. My grandmother would tell my sister stories of when she was a little girl and he would teach her Russian and hide candy under his pillow just for her, she was he favorite. We were told that we are White Russians and not the drink, it mean’s that we were part of the original Russia, before other countries moved in, you weren’t a White Russian if you were born in countries that became part of Russia through war. It was not uncommon when were young to open the refrigerator and find a pot of Borscht (Beet Soup) sitting there waiting to be consumed by the adults. They would eat it cold with sour cream on it. We would also have this pocket sandwich called Pitishkee.
