Castletownsend Salters

I am the daughter of Bartholomew Salter (b. 1922) in Castletownsend/Castlehaven, Co.Cork. His father was Thomas Salter-same place. The story goes that the Salters went over with Cromwell, originating from Cornwall. They were Protestants but at some point one of them married a Catholic so you get Protestant & Catholic Salters in the South West of Ireland. Anyone who is any the wiser I would be glad to hear from. Apparently we have many relatives in the US as well. Do any of you have relatives from that part of Ireland?

Horace Salter, bio

HORACE SALTER
Walsh Heritage, ND USA 1881-1981 Vol 1 p.204-205

Horace Ethelbert SALTER was one of ten children born to Mr and Mrs James David Salter at St Joseph Island, Ontario, Canada on Dec 30, 1883.

Granfather and Grandmother Salter operated a photo studio in Canada for some time. Then came an opportunity to move. He heard there was a studio available in Langdon, so he packed up his family and ventured to Langdon in 1892 where he began operating the studio. He was never sorry he made the move.

horace received his education at Langdon. He took part in sports and track and went to the North Dakota Fifth Annual Interscholastic Track and Field Meet held on University Field in Grand Forks on May 17 an 18, 1907. It was in the finals that he ran the 100 yard dash.

he studied law for some time and passed his examination, but the urge to join his father in the photographic business became his desire. Three brothers had joined their father previously. He stayed for some years with the business in Langdon, ND. While there he met Clara Marie ERICKSON, of Clearbrook, Minn,, who was employed in Langdon. they were married July 6, 1914 in Liangdon. Two daughters were born.

Grandfather Salter got the urge to go back to Canada so he left the business for Horace to operate. Grandfather died in 1915.

In 1918, Horace decided to make the move to Grafton to a studio there. His brother, Everett had rented the studio owned by Henry A. Ball, who came to Grafton when the city was in its infancy and operated it for many years. Everett operated the studio fra 1915 to 1918 at which time, Horace bought it fra Henry A. Ball. He like it so well in Grafton that he sold the business in Langdon.

Horace was a member of the Methodist Church, the Civic Club, the Grafton Clown Band ( three brothers were members of the Clown Band also). He was a member and founder of the Golden West Male Quartet.

Many times after hours one could hear music coming fra the walls of the studio as the four brothers, all of whom lived in Grafton, got together and had a real jam session.

Mr and Mrs Horace Salter worked together in the studio and in the later years their two daughters helped.

In 1947, Horace became President of the North Dakota Photographers Assn and that year Mrs Salter died. Horace died Mar 1, 1951.

Mary and Leona continued the business until they sold the studio in 1967 to Rilie R. Morgan, publisher emeritus of the Grafton record, for expansion of his business. The building was razed.
--

Laura SALTER b~1890 in Canada / English - came to US ~1906

Hello. I'm trying to find out more about my grandfather's oldest brother, William Stanley LEWIS, who was born in 1880 in Nova Scotia.* His parents migrated to Massachusetts in 1881, and they had 12 more children. The children were raised in Stoneham, MA.

I just found out that William's 2nd wife was a Laura SALTER who was probably born in ~1890 in Canada / English. She migrated to the US (New England) in ~1906 and seems to have married William in 1907. I don't know how they met or where they married.

They seem to have had only one child, a daughter, Mona, born in 1908 - surprisingly born in Bangor, Maine.

The couple spent all or most of their married life in Lynn, MA. William died in 1948. I don't know, yet, when Mrs. Laura LEWIS died.

The daughter, Mona, also spent all of her life in Lynn, MA. She married Francis LEGERE, and did not have children.

Is anyone researching a SALTER family in the Maritime Provinces of Canada?

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

* William's parents were John "Stanley" LEWIS and Mary Elizabeth CORKILL. They had been born in Liverpool, England, and had been "shipped to Canada" in 1874 as "British Home Children." They (and siblings) went to different homes in Nova Scotia. Stanley and Mary married in Nova Scotia in 1879, and migrated to MA / US in 1881. They were my great-grandparents.

I would love to contact any descendants of these families still living in the area.

I am trying to find the name of Elizabeth's spouse. I believe her maiden name was Kendrick. Elizabeth was born abt. 1841 in GA. In 1870 she was listed on the DeKalb AL census with her two small sons, John J. and James Salter. In 1880 the family was in Chattooga Co. GA and the name was spelled Saulter on the census.

John Saulter was the father of my grandfather, James Perry Saulter. He was married to Fannie E. Pool about 1880 in GA. The family moved to the Commanche Co. TX area very soon afterwards.

I will share what information I have.

Mary (Polly) Salter

Trying to find the parents Of Polly. From information I have she was born in Ga.(1860 census shows AL). She married Charles (Charley) Waters June 9, 1835 in Conecuh Co., Al.. They lived in Ramah in Conecuh Co., Al.. Ramah is near Burnt Corn, Al.. I've found several Salters that came fron Ga., and settled in this area, but un-able to find out which one this Polly belongs to.
In 1860 census she is showed to be 42, and is listed as Mary. This would mean she was born in 1818.
Is this the daughter of Charlie Partin Salter?
Also does anyone have any idea where her, and Charlie Waters are buried? I was at Ramah Baptist Church Sat.(Dec. 29). Lots of Salters, and Waters buried including several of Charlie, and Polly's children, but not them.
My e-mail is bglanier@frontiernet.net

Salter is a name of interest for the 1587 Lost Colony of NC

First the Lost colony project is a non profit organization.

Hello,

For those of you who don't know about the mystery of the Lost Colony, here's a primer. In 1587, Sir Walter Raleigh financed a venture in which 116 men, women and children were planning to establish the first permanent colony in the New World. Their goal was to raise tobacco and other supplies that colonists were unable to obtain in England, and to search for precious minerals, like gold.

In the fall of 1587, the colonists finally arrived on Roanoke Island in present day North Carolina, after a very difficult journey in which their food supplies were ruined. They sent John White, whom they had elected governor, back to England to obtain food and supplies and expected his return in the spring of 1588. However, the Spanish attached England and England, having no Navy, impressed all of her fishing vessels and private merchant ships into Naval service. Finally, in 1590, three years after
leaving the colonists which included his daughter, son-in-law and infant granddaughter, he returned to Roanoke Island to find it deserted, but not destroyed. It appeared as if the colonists had simply moved. A single word, a clue, Croatan, was carved on a tree. The Croatan were the friendly Indians living nearby. Before John's departure, he had instructed the colonists to carve crosses if they had to leave in distress. There were no crosses.

John White would spend the rest of his life searching for the Lost Colonists. Many hints and clues indicate that at least some of the Colonists survived and were assimilated into the native tribes. The
question is, did they, and if so, who are they today?

In 1993, the original site of the Croatan village was located. Subsequent archaeological and genealogical research suggests that the colonists did survive, and that when the land was granted to settlers, it was granted to some of those survivors who were by that time considered to be Indians. With recent advances in DNA for genealogy, we finally have, today, the ability to solve the mystery. We have created a plan that combines history, genealogy and DNA to solve the mystery. However, we can't do this alone. We need the help of the families who have been identified as "families of interest", being either roster members of the Lost Colony of those who obtained land grants on the original Croatan village site. Many of those names are the same.

In order to educate people and work closely with people who are interested, we are sponsoring the Lost Colony Symposium for DNA and Recent Research Sept. 7-9, 2007 at the Lost Colony Center in Williamston, NC. The symposium will be held between the Center and the Holiday Inn, as noted on the flyer at the website

Given that your surname is one of those on our "Names of Interest" list, I hope that people on the list will join with us in our research. I am hoping from this mailing, aside from encouraging people to attend the Symposium, to achieve the following:

1. To identify a primary research person or persons for your particular
surname who would serve as a contact/coordinator for future postings,
requests and research.
2. To identify a family archival website(s) if one exists.
3. To identify if there are any families of that surname that are from NC
(or early coastal SC or VA), have oral histories of Indian or "mixed"
heritage, are involved with any of the tri-racial isolate groups
(Melungeons, Red Bones, etc.) and/or have any oral history of the Lost
Colonies.
4. To determine if the family group is involved already with DNA testing,
and if so, who coordinates that effort.
5. To determine if there is any research occurring or that has occurred for
your surname in Great Britain, and if not, if anyone is interested in
pursuing that avenue.

To become involved with the Lost Colony project, or to support the project, please attend our Symposium. Our project plan will be announced at the Symposium, and we have a long list of wonderfully educational speakers. The
flyer is attached. Bring your pedigree charts and your genealogy as the right people will be present to help you with your testing plan.

If you can't attend the conference, you can still join the project.

Information will be posted shortly about how to do that on the Lost Colony website. We are in the process of setting us a private newsgroup for project members only which will also be available after the symposium.
Furthermore a blog has been created. http://www.the-lost-colony.blogspot.com/

If you are interested in this project or can be of help in any way, please contact me at restes@comcast.net.

The surnames are on our blog: http://www.the-lost-colony.blogspot.com/
Lost Colony website: http://lost-colony.com/home.html

Roberta Estes

"I will be on vacation from now until July 24th, and I will have very little access to e-mail. Please e-mail questions about the Symposium or the project to either my volunteer assistant, Nelda Percival at nelda_percival@hotmail.com or Anne Pool, the Center's Educational Director at croatan@peoplepc.com. They will answer any immediate questions about the Symposium and you will be put on an interest list."
I have run across the following spellings in my family...Salter, Salters, Solter and Solters and I've only gotten back as far as my greatgrandfather. If anyone has any information about the families with the above spelling in AL or GA I would love to share information. I'm afraid all but a few of my family have passed and am having trouble getting a new "starting" point. This is the link to my on-line family tree http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=gardentr... . I have SO many holes and dead-ends I really am having trouble trying to figure out where and what to do next. Thanks again for any help you can see fit to send. Linda

I am looking for information about my husband's gr-gr-grandfather, Ernest Joseph Boid Salter. He was born in London on July 13, 1872. His father was a missionary with the London City Mission. From 1894-1904 Ermest was a minister in Iowa but I don't know how or when he came to the U.S. He married Carrie Kenniston while in Iowa. In 1904 he moved to Canada and became the secretary to the Canadian Bible Society in Manitoba and Saskatchewan and held that position until he died in 1942. He is buried in Old Kildonan cemetary. Sound familiar to anyone?
Robert Salter and Margaret Moxley's parents

Bandon, Cork Co, Ireland. Robert and Margaret Salter left Ireland with their three children, who were born in Bandon. They must have left family behind when they left to move to Nova Scotia, Canada. HOW HOW HOW does one go about finding the Salters in Bandon in the 1730 to 1765 period.

We know they left then, we know their birth dates, Robert was born 1730 and Margaret was born 1737. We know they settled before 1765 in Nova Scotia because of land grants and such.

I have traveled (via the web) to sites in Bandon, but they only go back to 1860 or so. I have so many people on my charts from 1730 on, but nothing in Ireland.

If anyone knows what Salter would have done for a living. We think prhaps fishing, because the people in our family did that here in the North West. Perhaps lumber milling because they also did that.

Please help me get some ideas of who to write, email, web sites to go to. I am cruising through the salter board on one site and its great. Thanks for any help.

Moxley is an unusual name, perhaps there are some Moxleys out there with records.

When you send any messages please subject as SALTER. Some ninny got ahold of my email address and the porn is sailing in, so I have to junk mail everything that I don't know well. GRRRRRR

I have been able to trace my family in the Edgefield District of South Carolina back to John Salter (1786-1859) and Hannah Eidson (1824- ). I am interested in ancestors of this specific John Salter; when this branch of the Salters first arrived in the Edgefield District; their possible relationship to the various James Salters and their European origins. I will be glad to furnish any information I have on the Salters or Sheppards, in whom I am also interested. I can trace the Sheppard link back to James Sheppard ( - 1771) and Janette Riddle ( -1820). I am also very interested in information on the family of Jesse Zebulon Salter (1850-1910), my ggrandfather.
I look forward to responses.
John Salter

I'm looking for the parents or siblings of Rhoda Salter born between 1755 and 1774 probably in New York City. She died after 1800. She married Charles Frederick Weissenfels, who was a Capt. in the New York Levies during the Revolution. Later, I think he was collector of customs in NY. He was born about 1764 and died Feb. 10, 1795. Rhoda "Weisenfels" is found in the 1800 Census living in the 4th Ward near her father-in-law, Lt. Col. Frederick Von Weissenfels. They had three children: Charles T. Weissenfels (b. abt. 1784 - died Feb. 12, 1795), Sarah Charlotte Weissenfels (b. Dec. 23, 1784, NY, D. Dec. 23, 1837 in Louisiana, buried Island Cemetery, Newport, RI. She married Abraham Redwood Ellery on July 24, 1802. He was b. Newport, RI) and Anna Maria Weissenfels (b. Feb. 11, 1788, NYC - ?). Her husband had a brother George Peter Weissenfels (Lt. New York Levies) (b. May 27, 1864, NYC - died Sept. 29, 1798, buried Dutch Reform Cemetery, NYC. Married Maria Leaycraft on Nov. 16, 1791 in the Dutch Reform Church NYC). All three men were charter members of the Society of the Cincinnati. Any help would be appreciated.

From London Limehouse - Samuel John Salter goes to Hawaii

I would like to find any information about my grandmother's brother Samuel John Salter. My late father said it was belived that he went to Hawaii, possibly via Canada, in the late 1800's. He was the son of Ben Salter and Elizabeth Mary (nee) Gilbert. He was born in Limehouse Middlesex on 3rd Feb 1864. It was thought that his wife was from Malta.
The only possibilities I have are:-
1/ 1900 Honolulu census shows a Samuel J Salter born 1864 in England. His wife is shown as from Madera. Among his eight children is another Samuel J Salter born in Hawaii in 1892.
2/ 'June 5-17' Service Registration Card - Samuel John Salter - address 1219 Jefferson Oakland - employed Mesquita Cleaning Works 6211 Geary San Francisco - born Dec 20--90 Honolulu Sandwich Islands. (Samuel Salter Jnr.?)
3/ 1930 US census in Alameda CA shows Samuel Salter born about 1890 in Hawaii.
4/ California Death Index - Samuel J Salter born 20 Dec 1891 Hawaii - died 22 Sep 1966 Contra Costa - Mother's maiden name Rodrigue.
I'm in England and do not know my way round the US record system.
Harry SALTER, Rochester, NY

I'm looking for someone who may be able to access obituaries from the Rochester, NY newspaper "Democrat & Chronicle". Specifically, I'm looking for an obit for Harry SALTER, who passed away in the 1990s. He was my ex-husband's father, and little is known of him. The family members I can reach are not inclined to talk to me, so I don't know if they even know anything. Mainly, I'm trying to find info for our kids, so they can have a more complete picture of their family.

Wish I could provide more info. If anyone has any ideas, please pass them on!
