My mother's family on her father's side were SALTERS of Skibbereen, and I recognise several names in the various messages posted re. SALTERS. I was particularly interested in the cemetery information posted by WalshBarb, as several of the names are known to me as relatives of my particular SALTER branch. I am not a current member of Ancestry, so cannot contact WalshBarb directly, but hope she will make contact with me instead. I would very much like to know more about the cemetery information that was obtained, whether the details came from cemetery registers, or noted from tombstones.

Hi,

Thanks for the info. but I don't see a connection with the names sad to say. However, if you haven't done so already try this website: http://www.westcorkgenealogy.com/
It's run by Bill Fahy in the USA, and is a great source of information on West Cork families. His brother Frank lives in Skibbereen and we know each other as we are second cousins. You may know him better as Frank Fahy the former officer i/c of Skibbereen Fire Service (retired), and a town councillor.

I believe the owner of the castle in Castletownshend is a SALTER-TOWNSEND, but I've no idea if there is a family connection.

Kind regards, Mike.

Judy - we have to have a connection somewhere along the line. I have Salters, O'Briens and Hegartys from the same area of Lisheen and Kilkilleen. In fact, I have relatives with all three surnames who still live there.

Please contact me offline at barbwalsh49 so that we can determine our connection.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

My grandmother, Elizabeth Salter, was born in Skibbereen in the 1880's. Her mother's name was Nora Walsh I believe and her father and brother I believe were names Thomas. I know that Richard was also the name of one of her brothers perhaps. She moved to Boston at a young age and lived there until she met my grandfather, Matthew Quinn, in the Bronx,NY on a weekend visit. She moved to NY and had my father, John Richard Quinn. My younger brother's middle name is Thomas after her father or brother. I know that one of her brother's name was Thomas. She supposedly had 14 or so siblings. I visited the farm/homestead in 1990 and I believe the house overlooks Roaring Bay or some body of water by that type of name.

please contact me back if any of this sounds familiar. I know that Richard Salter, my grandmother's nephew, still lived in the area and owned the property at the time of my visit, though I didn't have time to visit. One of her sister's married into the Ryan family and there are many of them in that area as well.

Hi, my grandfather was Richard Salter, son of Robert and Margaret (Jagoe) Salter. They lived in Schull, in the district of Gurteenroe. His siblings were Elizabeth(Morgan Lambert),Katherine (Henry De ver Vane), Margaret (John B Deane),Mary or May (Benjamin Hosford), William Jagoe (Emily F Kingston), Robert (Mary Kingston).
My sister and I visited Ireland in 2007 and met William Salter-Townshend at "The Castle" in Castletownshend, the son of William and Emily, our fathers cousin. His brother George is Canon George Salter, would love further information on other branches of the family.

There are several SALTER families in the Skibbereen/Skull districts but I have yet to make any link with them in relation to my own SALTERs. For reference purposes my folks descend from Michael & Catherine SALTER (nee MELVILLE) who farmed a small plot of land at Ballybane East north of Skull in the mid C19. Michael was born in c. 1828. Their children were James (1853), Ann (1854), Mary Anne (1856), Marian (1857), Thomas (1859), Catherine (1861), John (1864), and Frances (1866). James born 1853 was my Great-grandfather, who married Jane STOUT in 1874 at the CofI church at Kilcoe. They went on to raise a family in Skibbereen town (Townshend St), although they lived at Hillsgrove at one time, a large house with land just outside Skibbereen where they had two stud horses, from where they were evicted in 1892. Their children were John (my grandfather - born 1876), Isaac (1878) [from whom the former officer i/c Skibbereen Fire Service (Frank Fahy) descends. His brother Bill maintains a fantastic website at http://www.westcorkgenealogy.com/ which I urge anyone with family connections to West Cork to visit]. Mary Amelia (1881), Thomas (1883), Annie (1885), Stephen (1887), James MELVILLE (1891), and Robert Michael (1894). My Grandfather John (1876 - 1935) married Louisa CONNELL (1890 - 1933) at Abbeystrewery (CofI) parish church, Skibbereen in 1907. They went on to have six children, and moved to Bantry town in about 1912, where my mother Irene was born in 1915. I welcome any contacts with anyone with known connections with this family. Thanks to all who have responded previously.
