The "made by Saake" sticker is in reference to my late Granfather's picture framing business in Oakland (Frank Saake), a framing and art store called "Saake's" which I believe still exists in Oakland, although is no longer owned by my family.

I read your post about the Saake Picture Framing business. I see that there was a Frank but did someone, maybe his father own it before him. It looks like it was around since the early 1900's. Also do you know when it was sold? The last I can find anything on the store in the Tribune was around 1975. I too have a picture with the label on it and am wondering about the age of the picture.

I worked for the City of Oakland for 25 years near the site and am always interested in knowing about the history..

Thanks

Hi, I have a set of two paintings also with "Saake" label on the back of both. The paintings/prints?? are of cottages with rivers and stone bridges. Both are signed in pencil but I cannot read the signature - maybe Burrery??

Would appreciate it if anyone can help me figure out who the artist is. I bought them at yard sale and trying to figure out their value.

Thanks.

Hi Cheryl,

I was wondering if you ever heard anything further to your post of April 2011. I have 2 water color paintings that were framed by Saake in the early to mid 1900's. They appear to be of Japanese or Chinese origin. We are trying to figure out who painted them. I hope you can shed some light on this.

Thanks
Kevin

Surnames: Saake, Armstrong, Selby
Hi,
I have a framed item with a sticker from your late grandfather's framing business on the back and am hoping that based on the address there, you can help me with an approximate date for when it was framed (and possibly sold) by them. The address is: 476 14th Street, Oakland. I found a city directory reference and an art directory for the store at that address in 1914, 1916 and 1917 with the reference E. J. Saake, maybe your great-grandfather? I also found a listing in the 1907 San Francisco-Oakland directory for E. J. Saake, pictures, frames, etc 13 Teleg. Av, Oakland 4278. I have seen other addresses for the company in later years and so am mainly interested in knowing the year that the company was at 476 14th Street. For anyone who is curious, the item is a very dark drawing of a landscape with a rustic log/stone cabin type house, details in blue and in white oil pencil on black or darkbrown paper, signed H. Armstrong Selby (for whom I can find no information, so if anyone has any idea of who that was, I would also appreciate that!)
