i have one of his hand stitched oil paintings and am curious as to its value

I knew George Van Saake, My father and he were good friends. George lived in Palmdale and we lived in nearby Lancaster. I was about 14 years old the last time I was at his home. We moved to Covina in 1969 and he may have passed away shortly there after. He told me many stories about his travels and I also have several of his paintings. I would like to talk to someone who knew him or was related to him. I'm especially interested in what happened to the value of his works. Also where I might find more.

Hello: Regarding George Van Saake. He died 12/77 in Palmdale. We have received most of his paintings as a donation and will display them in a future exhibition beginning 5/17/03. Unfortunately the donor did not have info on him. Norma Gurba Curator City of Lancaster Museum/Art Gallery

We were neighbors of George Van Saake and his father in Palmdale. My mother helped care for his father, a very sweet elderly gentleman. I was a child and didn't know either one more than to exchange the usual conversation one would expect. I also have one of his paintings and have wondered about the value. We didn't have much contact with him after his father passed on and George began seeing Rose so there's not much to tell. His house was fascinating, full of unusual artifacts from all around the world and photos of himself with famous people.

I have a water color that I purchased at an estate sale that has a sticker on the back which reads: Made by "Saake" 525-14 St. Oakland, Cal. The artist appears to have signed the front as J.F. Longe 1913. The name of the water color is "Autumn". Does this piece of art have anything to do with George Van Saake?
|
No ...your painting would not have anything to do with George Van Saake. H e was a wordl renound painter and concert pianis. He signed his paintings on the bottom right (Van Sakke) I havn't seen any others other than what I have since I last saw him 40 yearsd ago. He died not long after that and I have know idea what happened to his paintings.

In noticing your note about George Van Saake I realize where his works went when He died. I wish I had more of them. My family were good friends with him. I spent many evenings visiting his home in the hills near palmdale. I grew up in Lancaster. My father was a guard at the prison when I was starting school and later managed Pioneer lincoln Murcury on Sierra Hwy. in the 60's George was an extreemly interesting and accomplished pianist, painter and world traveler. Did you know him well and document any of his life and travels. They were extroadanary stories he used to tell me. I was only 12 at the time. He wanted my father to travel and get his paintings into gallery shows for sell.

Elmer Shackow.. Born Sullivan County Indiana.. 12-12- 1883 = Oct 1964 Hood River Oregon. Do you have any family by the following names and dates? Robert Shackow 7-1-1844 and Mary Shackow 6-30-1849 and they are buried in Clear Spring Meshak Cemetery in Choctaw OK. Sister Elsie is also buried there, she died at a young age. It appears my great grandfather migrated to Oklahoma from Indiana after my grandfather was born. But before Indiana, I have no idea. I suspect that at one point the Shackow spelling had been altered from something else. Thanks for your time Linda
