I would love to compare how all of us pronounce our last name vs. the geographical area we live in.
I'm originally from Erie, PA and we pronounce our last name Respecki
Respec + cki
How about you?

I was born Lindsey Rzepecki in Milwaukee, WI. We pronounce our name rez-uh-peck-ee. My relatives in Northern Wisconsin say zh-petz-key. My father also has known people to say zh-peck-ee, these people were Polish. I always thought I was Polish but Ellis Island records show that most Rzepecki's are Russian, any help on this? lem@uwm.edu

Both of my parents are from Poland and we pronounce our last name Zeh-pets-key except its not really zeh, the rz makes a special sound, how to explain it... position your mouth as though you were going to make the "ruh" sound, put your tounge back a bit in ur mouth so its about in the middle of ur mouth, then make a z sound, but keep ur tounge in the middle of ur mouth. Its complicated, i hope that made some sense.

I know its been quite awhile since you posted but I know that on the Ellis Island records where its says Russian instead of Poland was for a logical reason. In the history of Poland the "country" of Poland wasnt in existance from 1795 until 1918. Depending from what area your family was from they would have been either Austrian, German (Prussian) or Russian (the three occupying powers that had split the country of Poland between themselves) My grandmother Maryanna Rzepecki was from the village of Podwale which was from the area that was under the control of the Russians. This is why you would see on US census pages that people were Russian/Polish etc. They were ethnically Polish while they were from "technically" Russian. Do you know what village your Rzepecki's were from?

Thank you for the interesting information. Unfortunately I do not know much about the Rzepecki side of my family, that is why it interests me so much. My dad's father was Felix Rzepecki who died in the 50's and the family just lost touch with the Rzepecki side after that. My Grandmother probably knew some information, but she did not like to talk about it and she died a few years ago, so I will probably never know. Thanks again for the information and opening a little knowledge to my family's history!
