The following entries appear in the census transcriptions for Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire, in the heart of England, for 1851 and 1861.
Moreton, located on the Foss Way (at the intersection of the modern highways A44 and A429), is a frequently visited "late" Market Town in the Cotswolds. It is about 30 road miles south of Stratford-upon-Avon, taking a roundabout route through Evesham. It had a population of 2,802 in 1991.
Within a ten-mile (16 km) radius are a number of other towns and villages often encountered in Ryland research:
Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water, Ebrington, Alderminister, Stratton-on-Fosse, Barton-on-the-Heath, Chipping Norton, and doubtless others I have overlooked.
(It should not be confused with Moreton-Morrell northeast of Stratford, supposedly the home of Elizabeth Ryland after her marriage to Richard Randolph in 1644, a site of interest to many Virginia researchers.)
The surgeon William Ryland, born about 1798 in Long Marston, appears to have been married to the sister of Henry Busby. She was deceased by 1861, but her status is 1851 is unclear.
Herbert Ryland, born 1835, was apprenticed to the grocer Thomas Horne in 1851. Ten years later, he had married Susan A., and they seem to have had two children, Archeline (1858-1859) and Tom K. (1860). His birthplace was reported as Evesham in 1851 but Birmingham in 1861.
Unfortunately, a search of the LDS International Genealogical Index for these two individuals fails to turn up any christening or marriage entries for them.
