Anyone with Ryans Ancestors/Descendants have DNA testing? How did you perceive your results?

Hello,

I had the autosomal DNA test and really found I am disappointed. I have Redgates (my mother through to my ggrandfather) and no Redgate names showed up. Then I have Malloys (my ggrandmother), Gallaghers (my ggrandfather), Boyle (my ggrandmother), Coyle (my ggrandmother), and Ryans (on both my father's paternal and maternal side). There were 2 that I could see on the Ryan side. The names in my DNA do not ring a bell to me in my research. Is it because not many people have had their DNA tested? I sure would love to hear from others who may have found something similar or who were disappointed. One thing it did say is that I am 98% Irish which I knew pretty much anyway.

Hi Karen, I have tested but have not found many Ryan cousins. My Ryans are from Shenandoah County VA. I am curious what others find as well. It seems as if 85% of my DNA cousins on my paternal side are from the same common ancestor...leaving all the other ancestors in the dust. Stronger DNA?

You must have had the Y-DNA test? I did the autosomal since I have no males to test for my father's or mother's male line.

Frustrating.

So none of your Ryans are from Baltimore or Washington, DC?

Karen

I also took the autosomal test. I am a female so i can't take the y-dna test. My Ryan family came here to Shenandoah County in the mid 1700's. I'm not sure where they came from, I haven't been able to research further back. If you are interested, you can go to my family tree by clicking on my username and going to the Spitler family tree...search for Edward Ryan died abt 1784. That is my 6x great grandfather.

I also have Ryan ancestors and have the FamilyFinder autosomal DNA test with FTDNA. My Ryan connection is 4 generations back with Ryans who migrated from Ireland to Stirling, Scotland. The associated surnames were, Tracey, MacCormick, McIntosh

Hello,

My Paternal Ryan side is from Tipperary, and my Maternal Ryans were from Limerick, in a small town of Fenah. It was my. My one GGGfather was Patrick Ryan, from Tipperary, and married to Mary Crowe, and then my other GGGfather John Ryan, from Fenah, Limierick, married to Honorah Quinn. John Ryan had a brother William and a sister Bridget who came over with him. Also Ellen Quinn came with them and then a Michael McGraw and another McGraw was with them in Baltimore in the 1850 census. Bridget Ryan was married to Honorah Quinn's brother Jeremiah Quinn who was married to Bridget Quinn (I believe they were married when they emigrated from Ireland). The Quinn's ended up in Washington DC also and I believe they had a grocery store. Honorah Quinn must have died early because from family I understand that John Quinn remarried and had another daughter Beatrice. I have no idea who he married; only that her first name was Margaret. I do believe the this Beatrice Ryan lived in New York. I have been unable to find John Ryan and who he was married to the second time. There was among the children of John and Honorah, a John Ryan born in 1845 who we have never been able to find. He was only found in the 1850 & 1860 census and then never found again. My cousin who did all the research for the Ryans does not know about him at all. but this is also the time I have been unable to find John Ryan and his second wife or any other children. We do have a Missal with John Ryan's obituary. He died September 1868. My cousin said this was not our grandfather. This John was only 55 when he died. She has the birth date of our GGrandfather as around 1833 & married to Honorah Quinn but the John Ryan in the 1850 & 1860 census' was born abt. 1813. This would coincide with the obituary I found. And my Dad when he was first doing the research on the Ryan's had his birth date as 1813 and then crossed it out and put abt. 1833 married to Honora Quinn. Quite confusing and I think somewhere we lost a generation. But the children that are in the census' are the children of John and Honora. Honora Quinn was born in 1823 so that would mean that she was 10 year older than the John Ryan born in 1833. Rather odd.
Then the other GGGfather was Patrick Ryan married to Mary Crowe. We are not sure where they came into the US but I think it was Pennsylvania although I don't have concrete evidence of this. They showed up in Washington DC about 1860 or so.
If this sounds familiar to anyone please let me know. I sure would love to know about the John Ryan born in 1813 as he was married to an Honora Quinn as was the John Ryan born in 1833. Other names are Nowlan, Nolan, Hammer, Hanneghan, Ferguson, McEnery, Hammersly, Archibald. These are the names of Patrick and John Ryan's children married into.

If any of this sounds familiar let me know.

Hi Karen ,
Have you tried uploading your autosomal dna results to gedmatch.com. You can compare results with people who have tested with other companies there.
Cheers,
Tom

Hi Tom,

Gedmatch is having a problem right now. I have been unable to get a code from them for over a month now. I read where they were having problems with sending the emails with the codes to confirm registration.

I had great results with my Ryan connections with DNA. I don't have any of your surnames in my tree, but Ryan is a very common Irish name. Think it just depends on the amount of ancestors( most of mine had many children) and then by chance interested in their ancestry

Hi Tom,

I did that but I think my problem is I don't know any ancestors past 4 generations and the most recent current ancestor I would not know what name to look for. The closest matches are like 4.6 to 5 generations to the MRCA.

Any other suggestions when I am looking. It still sometimes confuses me. Thanks!
