I am searching for William RYALL who married Margret before joining the British Army in Dec 1846 by which time he had the first of 5 sons,Denis b. Oct 1845. William died in Quebec in 1862 and his widow eventually settled in Leeds. His youngest son Charles Alfred (my great-grandfather) was a policeman in Leeds. I would like to trace where he came from in Ireland. I know that he sailed from Cork to join his regiment, 17th Leicestershire, and one of his sons was discharged to Tralee. Any help would be appreciated. Regards Lindsay

Joseph Patrick Ryall, son of William Ryall and brother of Charles Alfred Ryall was my great grandfather and was too a policeman with Leeds City Police. The menfolk prior to this were all in the 17th Regiment of Foot serving in Ireland and Quebec where sadly William a Colour Sergeant it seems was accidentally killed by one of his own Privates on pay parade. The family originally came from the Tralee area of County Kerry and on discharge from the 17th all settled in the Leeds area of West Yorkshire.

Hi Thanks for your reply. Since I posted this in 2002 I have contacted St John's church in Tralee and have traced the family back to William's parents and have a maiden name for William's wife Margaret. I am happy to forward this information to you if you don't already have it. Can you tell me how you discovered the cause of William's death, when I went to Kew the only info was a gunshot wound but not the circumstances. Thanks Lindsay

Hi Lindsay, that was quick!I believe Williams wife was called Margaret Moriarty prior to their marriage on 9th November 1844.The family have an original hand written letter from what looks like an officers hand detailing WILLIAMS date of death on 26th August 1862 as killed whilst in the performance of his duties at 2 o,clock parade by a private named Tynan of the company to which he was Colour Pay Sergeant. He left a wife, six sons and one daughter. There are four sons at present serving in the regiment one of whom is sergeant the other three are in the regimental band. There are two sons at the Duke of York School the mother and daughter maintained by her sons.We know from regimental records that Tynan was discharged during the following year 1863 so can only assume Williams death was some kind of tragic accident. All the best,Barry

Hi Barry I was really excited to get your reply. I have spent nearly 10 years trying to trace the Ryall family. My great-grandfather was Charles Ryall, one of William's sons. I know that he served in the same regiment as William and his brothers but I could find no details at Kew. He married in Leeds and had two daughters,Irene Lilian married my grandfather Ernest Wooff. She died of bowel cancer on her 40th birthday during the war. I would be so grateful for a copy of the letter and any other documents you have. I had no idea that two of the boys were in school, but I did trace Margaret and her daughter on the census in Leeds. I also found the marriage of William's parents Denis and Mary Monahan on 18 August 1819; and William's baptism in 1824. He had two sisters and two brothers that are listed in the parish registers. I am happy to copy and records that you may not have if you are happy to do the same. I live in Surrey, England where are you? Many thanks Lindsay

Dear distant cousin, thanks for the reply what a small world we live in!I live in Wetherby,West Yorks.and my mother, who is ninety years old now still lives in Leeds with my two brothers. Her maiden name was Doreen Ryall and her house is roughly 100yards from where her vaguely remembered "Uncle Alf" used to live in Bellbrooke Grove. When Joseph and Alfred both left the Police they became commisionaires,Joseph with the G.P.O.in Leeds City Square and Alfred at the Tower Picture House on Briggate. In fact we think we have an old photo of the latter in his uniform complete with waxed moustache!Oddly some time ago I was in contact with another newly found distant cousin, with relatives in Sheffield and Leeds, who had done a lot of work on the Ryalls and he lives in Surrey also,at Egham. As you can probably tell I have only been on the net for a few weeks now much to the amusement of my children and grandchildren and i am quickly developing a cauliflower forefinger!I sent Steven in Egham copies of photographs, both military and civilian, plus copies of certificates and letters with regard our past relatives and would wish to do the same to you as you suggest. In order to arrange this my MOB.NO.is 07919 873891.Look forward to hearing from you, regards Barry,

Barry, Having recently picked up on the family hunt again, I came across your communications with Lindsay - which gave me some useful info. I am Graham Ryall, son of Harold, Grandson of William Edward and G.G of Joseph Patrick. I have tow brothers, Colin and Neil and a sister Alison (Mountfort). I have five sons Benjamin, Thomas, Matthew, Joshua and Zachary. So as you can see the family tree is spreading nicely. Not much action in the latest generation though! Regards

Dear Graham, nice to hear from you especially since we share t he same great grandfather(what does that make us exactly?)All our branch of the family still live in the Leeds area,my family being in Wetherby,I believe you are well south of here? Regards,Barry.

Hello Barry I have only just run across these communications. I am the younger brother that Graham mentioned. I fact you are right, most all do live in the South now since William Edward and Daisy ended up north of London after travels; but originally of Leeds. Having said that however, one of Graham's sons Matthew lives in the Halifax area. I myself live in America and have been here over 9 years now. Oddly enough, when I was a much younger man, I work3ed for Lucas Aerospace in Hemel Hempstead as a Contracts Engineering. For a period of years I had to make very regular visits to Pudsey. I am sure it is very du=ifferent now!! neilryall@gmail.com Kind regards Neil
