In case you have not already come across this:
THE MURDER OF SERGEANT RYALL.—The private soldier named Patrick Tynan, accused of the murder of Sergeant Ryall at Quebec, after a full and patient investigation of his case, which occupied four days, has been acquitted on the ground of insanity. He was ordered to be detained in jail until Her Majesty's pleasure should be known. Judge Meredith, who charged the jury, was evidently satisfied that the prisoner was at times insane, and especially so he committed the horrible murder. [St. Catharines Constitutional – Feb. 19, 1863]
