I'd like to get in touch with you about the Chicago Ruzickas and the ones in SW Michigan.

My son-in-law is K--- Kliner. I have done some of his genealogy for fun (I don't think he cares much, but I know my daughter sends the stuff I send her to her husband's aunt, who loves it!).

K's great great grandmother was Maria Ruzicka, b. Bohemia (I suspect Radnice) in May 1864, married Frantisek Kliner, Sr. They both emigrated to the US and died in or around Chicago. She died Oct 6 1952; he in 1917. They are both buried in Bohemian Natl Cemetery. I have a photo of their headstone. It includes a portrait of him but hers is missing.

If you trace through the descendants, you eventually come to a twisted connection to Kliners who moved to the New Buffalo, MI, area in the 1900s. One of them, Joseph, married a Ms. Jennie Brcka. Well, it seems Jennie had a bunch of sisters and they all married in that area and pretty much stayed connected. One of them Agnes, married a Frank (Frantisek?) Ruzicka born Sept 1881 in Bohemia (father: Joseph, b. 1848; no further information).

I love connections. So I've been trying without success to see if there's a connection between the Frank Ruzicka and Maria Ruzicka who was my son-in-law's gggrandmother.

If you can shed any light on this at all, I'd love to hear it! My son-in-law would yawn, but so what!?

:)

Tom
Joe, this is a shot in the dark, but I wonder if we might be related. I've vaguely heard of a grandfather named Leo coming in through Galveston. Actually, what I'd heard was of the grandfather coming in through Ellis Island, then sending for his wife a child back in Czechoslovakia. Then they came through Galveston. Leo may have been the grandfather or father of my grandfather, John Joe or Joe John (I never knew him), who lived in West, TX until his death in 1969. Think there's any connection?

By the way, Leo or his family was supposedly from Lipnik in what is now the Czech Republic.

My connection to Ruzicka is only through my son in law, and I have no connection to Smida at all but I would like to learn more about Marie Ruzicka, b. May 1862, Radnice, Bohemia, d. 6 Oct 1952, married Frantisek (Frank) Kliner. They were my son in law's great great grandparents. They lived in and around Chicago all their lives. I have lots of info on Kliners but nothing on Marie Ruzicka.

The interesting thing to me is that in researching 20th century Kliners I know are down from Frantisek and Marie, I find other Kliners married to other Ruzickas! I'm dying to know if they are all connected!

Sorry I can't help with the Smidas, and I'm pretty sure the Minnesota Ruzickas aren't the ones I'm tracing, but who knows...

Hello,

My dad's maternal great-grandmother's name was Rosalia Ruzicka. She was more than likely born in Pohrlitz, South Moravia, Czech Republic, because her father Johann Ruzicka (no other info. on him) and her daughter Johanna (b. 1895) were born there as well. Johann was married to Katharina Balcar. Rosalia was married to Bartolomaeus Liska born in 1865 in Pohrlitz as well. It does not necessarily mean that the surname Ruzicka originated in the Czech Republic, but that they resided there.
I was born in Vienna, Austria and am a first generation immigrant to the US by the way.

Feel free to contact me: Punknut17@aol.com

Greetings,
Kat

Phil,
I am so glad to hear from you! I was wondering since the family lost contact with Frank if they knew of him changing his last name Miller and if so what was the story behind the name?

My grandfather (who I didn't know very well) had always went by that last name Miller and we only heard for the first time after his passing when my mother received his personal belongings that his birth name was Ruzicka/Ruziska.
Dear Anna,

I just came across your query and it appears that we may have a match. The spelling of the names are not exactly the same, but I have found that’s common with our ancestors due to the Czech alphabet and pronunciations not easily translated into our alphabet.

Anyway, here’s what I have on our family. See if it sounds like it matches your grandfather.

It sounds like your grandfather was a brother of my grandfather (Joseph), who had 4 brothers. Their names, as we were told, were:

Franz
Anton
Leopold
Andrew

Franz (possibly your grandfather) came over in 1908. I have a copy of the ship manifest showing him to be 17 years old and traveling with Auguste Kohler, who married my grandfather here in America. We understand that she was bringing Franz over and was sent for by the family. The ship was the Barbarossa sailing from Bremen and arriving June 24, 1908.

The parents of the boys had arrived in New York in 1904 and brought the boys over as they were able to afford it. Now it gets interesting. The father’s name was shown on the ship manifest as Johann Ruzieka. His wife’s name was shown as Antonie. BUT, that was his second wife. We have the name of the mother of the boys as Mary Skrydla. Before coming to America, they lived in Mistek, Austria (what is now in the Czech Republic, but then was part of the Austro-Hungary Empire).

My grandfather came over in 1905. He was the eldest, born March 9, 1881. His name on the ship manifest was spelled Josef Ruziczka, which evolved into Joseph Ruziska. He had two children: Joseph Leopold (my father) and Anna (a coincidence that it matches your name?).

The story on Franz was that he left New York City on a train and was never heard from again. We often mentioned that and wondered what had happened to him.

I can provide more details if you think our families are a match. Let me know your side and I will respond with more information.

Phil Ruziska

I am looking for information on my grandfather Frank Ruzicka born in 1890. He came to the US in 1908 and sometime later changed his last name to MILLER. He lived in COLORADO since sometime before 1943. My mother said he mention that he had brothers here with him in the US, but they lived some where back east. Don't know if he ever kept in contact with any of his family but we have a copy of a Rodney List that was generated in 1964.
I would like any information you may have on his parents and siblings so that I may add to my family tree.
Thanks,
Anna

I have noticed reference to a Theresa Alexander who was in the United States around 1874.

My great grandmother, Theresa Alexander (variously spelt in a number of ways but her birth name appears to have been Trayzea Leshinski or similar spelling) Trayzea was born in Posen (Poland or Germany). Her father's name was Isaac Leshinski.

Trayzea married Jacob Alexander in about 1867 in Newcastle on Tyne (England). They went to New York for several years then back to England. My grandfather Abraham Alexander was born in Newcastle in 1876. The family now comprising 5 children emigated to Australia in 1877 aboard the "Samuel Plimsoll"
Children were Henrietta1868, Julius 1870, Myer 1873, Israel 1875 and 1876 or 1877. Theresa's death certificate in 1906 shows Abraham as 27 but 1877 Immigration and shipping records show him as 1 year old in 1877?

Theresa died in Sydney (Australia) on 2 November 1906. I have a copy of her death certificate but have been unable to locate a grave which is stated on the death certificate as "Rookwood Hebrew cemetery"

Is this the same Theresa Alexander referred to in your research?

Are we able to assist each other in tracing our ancestors?

Regards

Adrian Alexander
Sydney - Australia
adrian@newera-consulting.com.au

Hello, I was looking for history on a gorgeous bridal wax headpiece that was worn by Katherine (Ruzicka) Prihoda. I happened across your post: This information was written on a very old typewriter, and it reads: "Tiara was created by Benedictine Convent of Nuns For Katherine (Ruzicka) Prihoda of Prachovice (Bohemia Province) Czechoslovakia and worn by Katherine in 1852 1-st worn in 1852

Tiara worn a second time:

by Lillian Florence Prihoda...Berwyn, Ill., U.S.A. in 1948."

The only problem with this information is the time period...the name is the same. If you have any other information, I would appreciate your sharing it with me. Regards

Hi Folks, I'm of the Mary (Ruzicka) Savage and David Ruzicka clan on these boards. I've traced the Ruzicka family from Jan Ruzicka in Prague/Plzn thru two brothers (Charles and John)who came to Chicago circa 1887. John stayed in Chicago and Michigan while Charles moved to the Dakotas and Montana. The elder brother, Josef, was in the Austrian army and moved to Croatia where he married and i lost track of him. Anyone interesed in detailed in formation can contact me at dpokorny@cox.net.
