Jim,

Wanted to let you know that I have made some progress, however, not in connecting the RUTAN side.

In family papers of Frances (Zacek) wife of E. Carl Rutan in SD, I found an envelope with George W. Harnel (Arnold/Arnel) on it and songs that had been hand written.
On the bottom of one of the pages, that person has written out what looks like a little line for her as follows:
(it is as though she is showing her daughter (Minnie Arnel/Arnold) how the family goes back:

Joseph C. (no last name) (I believe this is my Joseph C. Swearingen)
Sarah Rutan (her 1st marriage)
Sarah Arnold (her current/2nd marriage)
Minnie L Arnold (her daughter by her second marriage)

It's the ONLY thing that has surfaced.
I am now in possession of photos so am going nuts trying to sort them and make some ID.

Josiah/Jesse and his wife Laurietta wound up living in Bridgeport during their later years. They lived with one of their sons near the end of their lives (Norman), and his wife. Josiah was buried in Brooklyn, but Laurietta is in Bridgeport. I have had a hard time trying to find her mother's maiden name. Her father was Peter W Birck, born in Copenhagen Denmark. He is a well known Brooklyn Firefighter (1849-1900), and started the first carpenter's union in Brooklyn. Josiah/Jesse met Laurietta while she was in service as a maid for the T.B. Ruatn family.

I always wondered how Annie met Thomas. Back then. it seemed to be a matter of proximity and the circle you lived in. That little nugget of Josiah and Thomas knowing each other fits nicely. Josiah/Jesse was born in 1864. His father Josiah passed away in 1865. Annie and Thomas married in 1868.

Did I tell you that I met Ruth Heningham, daughter of Josiah/Jesse's older brother, Richard Heningham? She was born in 1919 when her dad was well into his fifties. She was filled with anecdotes about the family that her and her brother had collected. Her father passed away during the flu epidemic when she was an infant and they had tried all their lives to find out more regarding the Heningham origins.

Hey Michael, Good to hear from you aftger these many years. I don't have a lot on the business relationship of Thomas B. Rutan and Josiah Heningham. Off the top of my head I believe that Josiah was born in England and that they were partners for a brief period of time. Thomas was born in 1837 and I think their partnership was over by the time the Civil War started. Thomas enlisted in 1861 or 1862. After the war Thomas briefly lived in Bridgeport CT but was in Brooklyn soon hereafter and was a very successful builder and politician.Note that some of Thomas' adopted children lived in the Bridgeport area later. He was in the "Brooklyn Eagle" frequently because of his political activities and his involvementwith the GAR.

Hi Jim and Meg,

I've been directing energies elsewhere and just started to poke into family history again. I was able to sample my Y chromosome DNA to a Rutan living in Paterson with no match what so ever. It appears our family DNA is linked to indigenous British families. Some good matches to folks living in Wales and Scotland. I'm new to the DNA ancestry and just learning.

Jim, I appreciate all the assistance that you provided in researching the Heningham/Rutan connection. I would love to hear more about Thomas Benton and Josiah being business partners. The last info I have on Josiah in terms of profession is that of a wheelright. This was given to me through the notes of his brother Richards son. I'm guessing they were in some sort of construction business? Josiah traveled to the Manchester UK area soon before dying oh remittant fever. His death record was under Heminsley. His son Josiah D. Heningham changed his name to Josiah T. Rutan, but I'm not sure if that was legally done?

We're living in Sturbridge, MA now.

All the best too all of you

Hi Meg: I have quite a bit on this branch of the Rutan family but it is a little murky because some of Jesse's siblings were adopted. Jesse's father was Thomas Benton Rutan (1837-1903)a builder and politician in Brooklyn. Thomas was my great grandfather's brother. He served in the Civil War.

When Thomas' business partner Josiah Heningham died Thomas married his widow Annie Powers and Thomas adopted Josiah's children. I think Jesse (also known as Josiah) was one of the adopted children,

I have info on Jesse, his children and grandchildren and can go back to 1658 the year that Abraham Rutan, a Huguenot and the first Rutan to emigrate to America (1675) was born.

I have Arnold Robert b 1921 m Helen Victoria Curry; she b in Philadelphia and he died in AZ.

Let me know if I can provide any further info.
Hi Stephanie; I picked up your two messages. Out of privacy considerations I don't knowingly have persons in my database who are alive. Thus I have few in my files born after 1950. As for your interest in the Rutan family of Iowa I have a lot and would be happy to send you out some data. Let me have your postal address (email me direct) and I will send you some "stuff". My email: diggerjjk@aol.com Jim Keegan

I tried to send this message yesterday but it bounced.

I have AugustUS Rutan b 1880 son of John Rutan and Flora Townsend m Elizabeth Dyer b 1885 of Saginaw MI (1900 census and info from Terri Bartley.) Their son Augustus Jr. (1906-1906) (his Obit appeared in the Saginaw Evening News 3 April 1906 (from Jody Zorsch)

I do not have Peter Rutan b 1808 as the son of Samuel Rutan and Susanna Cymer/Kymer (although at one time I thought that was true). The reason: Samuel and Susanna's son Peter (1808-1896) m Mariah Compton (1806-1887). They lived in Luzerne Co., PA and Chemung Co., NY and they had nine children.

All Rutans (Retans, Rheutans, Rutons and Ruttans) seem to be descendants of Abraham Rutan (1658-1713 and Marie Petilon (c1660-1713) who arrived in America in 1675 from Alsace France. They were Huguenots who settled in New Paltz NY and in 1699 moved to New Barbadoes, Bergen Co., NJ

You asked several questions:

I am not aware of any planned family reunions.

You asked about Civil War soldiers. I have records of about 40 Rutans who fought in the Civil War (5 or 6 were killed or died of wounds) and all but one or two fought for the Union. James Clearwater Rutan (1838-1911) son of Peter Rutan and Jane Sherman served as a Sergeant in the 179th N.Y. Volunteer Infantry. I have a photo of him in uniform with his wife Amelia Breese. I would be happy to send you a copy. You mentioned that you had family photos. I would be grateful for copies (photocopies o.k.) My address; 10 King Rd. Sound Beach, NY 11789

At least six Rutans were soldiers in the Revolutionary War and two or three of these were Loyalists who moved to Canada after the war. They changed the spelling of the surname to Rutan.

The parentage of Peter Rutan (husband of Jane Sherman) is one of my brick walls.

BTW my maternal grandmother was born Harriet Rutan (1874-1948) of Brooklyn NY.

I hope this is of interest.
I responded to your message earlier today and my response bounced. Let us try again.

I have Thomas Benton Rutan (1868-1961) son of John Hannon Rutan (a CW soldier) and Caroline Minor of WV. Thomas married Susan E. Steele (1872-1951)in 1896. In 1910 he was a farmer and they were living in Union District, Putnam Co. WV (census). They are buried at the Steele Cemetery, Red House WV.

I have a lot on this branch; they were originally from New Jersey.

Best, Jim Keegan

John Rutan marriage to Henrietta Hatt

Looking for the marriage registration of John Rutan and Henrietta Hatt. Also would like info on John's second marriage to Caroline.

John also had the following children; Lewamy, Cecilia, Albert, Ellen and Marium. I have them as the children of Caroline, however, I have no proof other than the fact that the 18509 census shows JohN, Caroline and the above listed children living together. John supposedly married Henrietta abt. 1838 which certainly means these children could be hers as they were b. abt. 1838 - 1847.

Any ideas, sources, help appreciated.

Thanks,
Scott Mills

Hi Jim,
I am from the Detroit Rutan family. My Great great grandfather was Augustin Rutan. I have great photos of the family.Augustin married Elizabeth Dyer. Thanks to your help, I have traced us back to New Jersey and New York.
Peter RUTAN, b. 1808, Hackensack, NJ; d. 1883, Elmira, NY; md. Jane SHERMAN b. 1816, Ulster Co., NY; d. 1892, possibly Elmira??? Peter was a distiller in Mamakating, Sullivan Co. Their son John W. was born 1855 in NY; where? Peter and Jane eventually moved to Midland, Michigan, where John married Flora TOWNSEND 11 May, 1879. They had two children in MI, before moving back to New York, where they had two more children, and then moved back to Michigan! Peter was the son of Samuel RUTAN (from Frankford Twp.) and Susannah CYMER, md. 17 Sept. 1804, in Sussex Co. NJ. Is this info. part of the data you've collected and where to next? When did this line immigrate? We're any of these folks in the Civil or Revolutionary Wars? Is there a reunion planned?

Jim,

Sorry, I replied separately to kcvannett, the original poster. Is there Van Etten/Rutan info you are looking for? I have a cousin who has done a pretty hefty research job, and if you're missing info, between us we can probably fill it in.
You can contact me at petitefutee@hotmail.com

Janet

Do you have any information on a Thomas or Susan Rutan from WVA? They would be my great grandmother and grandfather.
