Jim,
We are still out here! I would think that with the cold weather we would all be at our computers trying to find lost family members and those we never knew about.
I hope you had a Happy New Year.
Did I send you the information on how my Ruton clan ended up in Canada? I honestly forgot if I did or not.
The next time I go out to Ohio, I want to look up some of the Ruton's out there. I usually go there every summer for a convention in Columbus and spend time in Newark, OH, where a lot of the Ruton clan ended up once leaving the East coast. Do you know of anyone in OH that I can speak with when I go there?
Best Always,
Pam

Hi Jim,

I had to chuckle at your question. My answer is no, I haven't been hibernating...just hitting brick wall after brick wall until today.
I've learned that Mary Isabel Rutan, daughter of James B. Rutan and Mary Curry, was married twice: first to Charles Erhardt. on October 18, 1901. They had two children: Julia Dorothy and Charles James. Charles died in 1918. She married John Reichenbach around 1920, and they built a home in Rosedale, Queens County, New York in 1931. John Reichenbach died in 1952. This info was given to me by Mary's granddaughter. Hope this helps a bit.

Jill: I looked at the 1930 census this morning and naturally the page I wanted was faint, smudgy and blurry. It shows John Reichenbach 49 with wife Mary 48 (her mother b in Ireland) in Queens Co. NY; John was a policeman. There is a 24 year old someone living with them so John might have had a first marriage and the someone is a child by the first marriage. Film too indistinct to decipher. So...little bits and pieces. Jim

Hello. Do you have your Rutan family line back to PA or on to Iowa by chance?

Looking for:

John b abt 1827? & Sarah (Swearingen)b 1839 PA Rutan
John T Rutan b 1855/57 PA
Charlena A Rutan b 1859 OH?
Alfred Peter Rutan B 1861 IA

Something happened (Civil War?) to John Rutan
(probably in Iowa)
Sarah married George W. Arnel/Arnold
three more ARNEL/Arnold children were born.
Family in Iowa in 1870

By 1880 they are all in Nebraska.
Finally in SD before they die.

If any of this sound familiar, please let me know.

Jim,

Wanted to let you know that I have made some progress, however, not in connecting the RUTAN side.

In family papers of Frances (Zacek) wife of E. Carl RUTAN in SD, I found an envelope with George W. Harnel (Arnold/Arnel) on it and songs that had been hand written.
On the bottom of one of the pages, that person has written out what looks like a little line for her as follows:
(it is as though she is showing her daughter (Minnie Arnel/Arnold) how the family goes back:

Joseph C. (no last name) (I believe this is my Joseph C. Swearingen)
Sarah RUTAN (her 1st marriage)
Sarah Arnold (her current/2nd marriage)
Minnie L Arnold (her daughter by her second marriage)

It's the ONLY thing that has surfaced.
I am now in possession of photos so am going nuts trying to sort them and make some ID.
