So I've pieced together my Ruane family from Bonniconlon Mayo. The parents were James and Mary (Foody) Ruane. Mary was born August 27, 1859 in Ballina. Her father was Patrick Foody.

Jim and Mary Ruane's children were as follows:

Catherine Ruane Carlon-1883
Bridget Ruane Burke-18884
Mary Ruane-1885
Ann Ruane Cunningham-1887
Margaret Ruane-1889
Patrick Ruane-1892
James Ruane-1895

My great grandmother is Bridget but she went by the name Agnes, her middle name.

Relatives told me the Ruanes all came over to the States after 1900, and either lived in New York or New Jersey. I am trying to find passenger or census records of theirs-I found several but am having a bit of trouble with the census. My cousin said she fondly remembers visiting Katie, Ann and Maggie and their families many times back in the 1940s in Brooklyn.

It's very exciting to hear from other Ruanes.

My grandfather was Michael Ruane from Bonniconlon. He was born about 1892 and came to the US (Delaware) in 1913. His sister was Catherine and I believe mother's family name was Henry.

Perhaps we are distant cousins then-could be our great grandparents knew each other. Bonniconlon is small. My Ruane relatives were mostly towheaded, so when we had a big family reunion back in the 1990s for my uncle's 80th birthday there was a group shot of about 75 blond people!

Hi,

I've just been looking into the history of the family name and have stumbled across your message.

I don't think it is true that all the Ruane's of Bonniconlon, left. In fact several are still there. My grnadfarther is one of them. He, however lives in England. There is another in Boston and one in Australia, leaving three in Mayo.

If you want any information, feel free to contatc me.

Daniel Ruane

I'm sure we are cousins then. I drove over to Bonniconlon a couple of years ago and spoke to an old neighbor. She thought that there Ruanes would all have left by the 1980s. I did have a great-uncle Peter who lived there until about then.

If you are looking for more info a great source is the 1911 Irish census. It is now online for all counties. It has an incredible amount of detail and is quite easy to use.

You mentioned a great uncle named Peter. Did he depart with his wife and three children Glenree for England in 1967?
