Michael Ruane, Glenree, Cty. Mayo
My grandfather was Michael Ruane b.1876 d.1953 in Chicago. Emigrated 1896, married Mary Cabrey of Cty. Sligo in 1909 either in Chicago or NY. His father was Johnny Ruane said to have been a farmer and his mother's maiden name was Durkin or Durkan. He had a sister Maggie Dalton who brought him to Chicago along with his younger brother Patrick. Michael was listed in the 1920 census as a teamster in the stock yards but was known to have other jobs such as milk wagon driver, laborer and street car conductor. He had many cousins in the Chicago area. Any info would be appreciated.

Re: Michael Ruane, Glenree, Cty. Mayo
Wondering if you have information concerning the parents of your Michael Ruane of Glenree. My great-great grandfather, also Michael Ruane, had left from Foxford for America in 1847 and came to Illinois, then Minnesota....while a great great grandmother on another side with name Sarah Melvin Nealis was FROM Glenree, her daughter Sarah Nealis Ruane (Rowan) to Minnesota about 1860. Can you supply any early tie-in there in County Mayo? Hope so. Sincerely, George E. Murphy, gem@vermontel.net

Might add, Denise, that a younger party carrying the name Durkan or -in was on the same ship, the Niagara, which brought Michael and wife Ann Gallagher to N.Y. (sailed Liverpool, arrived February 26, 1847) and later, Illinois. Maybe a young relative of his? Thanks. George Murphy

Re: Michael Ruane, Glenree, Cty. Mayo
Sorry, the only info that I have on Michael's family is that he had a sister Maggie Dalton with whom he lived in Chicago, a brother Patrick who served as the best man at his wedding to Mary Cabrey of Sligo. He arrived in the U.S aboard the Teutonic in 1898. Parents names were John Ruane and Mary Durkin as far as we know. Also know from a cousin who lives in Sligo that all the Ruane family has left the town where they came from so until I go back to Ireland I may not be able to find any more info.Don't recognize any of your family names as being in the same clan.

Re: Michael Ruane, Glenree, Cty. Mayo
Thank you very much, Denise -- as soon as I'd e~ you a few days ago I realized you'd actually answered my question with the names you gave. Sorry! Yes, mine are one or two generatons earlier in leaving, farm people who headed for what were the new middle west lands of the time. Again, Thanks. George

Re: Michael Ruane, Glenree, Cty. Mayo
I visited Glenree in Aug. 2001 and through the local parish priest was introduced to Jack Durkin. Jack himself is a Ruane, and his uncle (Tom Ruane?) at that time still lived in the Chicago suburbs. Durkin's property abuts the land farmed by John and Michael Ruane, which is now owned by the Moran (?) family. The remnants of the farmhouse still stand, but it's essentially unreachable due to bog. I have limited notes and some photos if you are interested.

Re: Michael Ruane, Glenree, Cty. Mayo
Dear Walter, Thanks for the info.I'm sure this is my grandfather's family and I would be very interested in any notes and or photos you have. I have met your mother and dad many years ago when we lived in the same town. I also have Jack Keehan's notes on the family which he gave me at my mother's wake. I only know of two siblings Michael had, Margaret and Patrick. I would love to know the names of any others and if they emigrated to America. I also have met Tom Ruane but can't quite figure out the relationships so if you know it would help. Thanks

Re: Michael Ruane, Glenree, Cty. Mayo
Denise: My information comes mostly from Jack Keehan's research as well, and while looking through it last night found your entry in the materials - indeed a small world! From the info I have, 4 of Johnny Ruanes 12 children have traceable lineages. Patrick, Margaret, Michael, and then Thomas Ruane, who also emigrated to the Chicago area. Thomas had many children, one of whom (Tom Jr.) as of several years ago was residing in Orland Park, IL (?) and was known to Jackie Durkin of Glenree. If I have the lineage right, Jackie Durkin would be your second cousin. Jackie Durkin's grandfather (Tom) was brothers with your grandfather (Michael). Tom and/or Jackie may have information regarding other siblings. My email is wpmr@yahoo.com - if you want to provide your contact info I would be happy to forward copies of what I have.

Re: Michael Ruane, Glenree, Cty. Mayo
My Ruane ancestors were from Co. Mayo and settled in Chicago. My understanding is that they were from the area of Ballina - Crossmolina. My g grandmother, Ellen Ruane's parents were Thomas Ruane and Ellen Rollin/Rowlan/Rowlin/Rowland. I believe my g grandmother had brothers: Thomas and Patrick and sisters: Sabina, Honor, Winifred and Margaret. I suspect there were more siblings. My ggrandmother, Ellen, married Charles Chambers in 1889 in Chicago.
