Hello June

The Ancestry.com website provides access to a book entitled "Descendants of Peter Willemse Roome" by P.R. Warner. Pages 288 & 289 will provide some of the data you are looking for. If you don't have access to the website, contact me and I will provide the information.

Hello Ed
Can you tell me how you access this Roome book on this site?
I am descended from Roomes in Australia, who emigrated from South Africa, who emigrated from the UK and who supposedly were descended from French Huguenots.
Regards Liz

I do know of the Australian Roome family from South Africa as they lived in the same suburb in Brisbane. I assumed there was no connection at all but I am wondering if the family may have been connected a few generations back in London. I was talking to a person related to the French Huegonauts? recently and she said that a lot came over and settled in Spittlefields in London. I cannot trace our ancester Joseph Roome b. 1797 circa back any further. He was a lapidiary and his sons were pipe organ makers. He was born in Middlesex and lived around the St Pancras area. He is probably related to Josiah Roome b. 1807 and Samuel Roome and possibly a Thomas Roome. His sons were Thomas Frederick b 1821, Joseph b 1817 and Frederick James b 1823. Both Thomas and Joseph moved to Canada (Ontario) but I don't know what happened to Frederick James. Thomas had a family of 7 in London who remained in England and another family of 10 in Canada. One of his sons Arthur Roome also had a son George Frederick Roome and I don't know where they ended up i.e. could have been South Africa. I think all the other male Roomes stayed in England except for Thomas' firstborn son George Frederick b. 1845 who had a grandson who settled in Australia in 1945.

If you find the link to this book please let me know as well as I may be able to find a link to the French as well. The Huegeonauts were the protestants in France and being a Catholic country may have been forced to leave but I am not aware of their history as I haven't researched it further.

Hello Elizabeth

Under the Search portion on Ancestry go to "Family & Local Histories". Click on this and then type in "Roome" under key words. The book is titled "Descendants of Peter Willemse Roome" and covers the Roome family who came from Holland and settled in New Amsterdam, NY.

Please advise if I can be of any further help.
Ed

Thank you Ed.
I finally found it.
But I have to pay to set up an account, so I'll have to leave it for now.
Thanks again, Liz

Thank you for your reply Sandra.
I am sure that we are related further back (from England days), but the Roomes that came to South Australia are descended from Edward James Roome, born 1858 in South Africa and Louisa Wilkins, born 1857 in South Australia. One of Louisa's brothers had a son called Hubert Wilkins. He became one of Australia's most remarkable explorers. If you look up Sir Hubert Wilkins on the internet, you will be amazed at all his "firsts"!! - submarine under the Arctic, mapping coast of Antarctic, taking photos from an aircraft etc.
Does Edward James Roome tie in with your Roomes? His father was John Bushnell Roome.

Regarding John Bushnell Roome, was he born in England or South Africa. I live in England at present and our local library has the censuses back to 1841 online. There were some Romes living in St Pancras who were watch case makers. This is a very huegenot occupation from what I read when I put in a google search for Huegenot and Spittlefields. They also settled in Soho in the west of London which is closer to where my ancesters came. I don't think Roome is a very French name but it could have Dutch roots. Sometimes our Roomes were spelt Rome. I think that it was pronounced Room back then so somewhere along the way the second 'o' was added.

I will also check on genes reunited to see if this John appears.

Good Evening: I am a descendant of Maria Roome (11/20/1689). She married Marten Berry. I believe she is the granddaughter of William Jansen Roome. Would this be the same William mentioned in all the recent posts?
Thank-you
