I'm looking for information on the family of Juan Romas, also known as John Roams who was born in Portugal, most likely Lisbon in c 1843, emigrated to Australia as a mariner per 'Sarah Grice' in 1872, married Mary Jane Kirkman and had 9 children. Specifically, I'm looking for information on Juan's ancestors - the only information I have is that his parents were John (Juan) and Frances Maria and there may have been a connection with a vineyard... love to make contact with any distant relatives!

Susan -- have you done any follow-up on the other Romes family I found for you in Milwaukee ... was it in church records? I remember something about a link to a potential brother through baptism records. I haven't indexed anything new in the Romes line, but I did find another really great article on Jacob Laubenheimer - yet another of his many anniversary celebrations (with photo) as a police officer, and it really has as much or more bio. info than his obit.! (Who knew all this stuff was out there in these papers ;-)
Gary Rebholz, compiler/editor
Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items (1844-1950)

Searching for Adeline Romas Yocum of Clay Co, IN

Harley Roscoe (1883-1914) wed Emily Pearl Yocum on 16 Oct 1910 in Clay Co, Indiana. They had 4 children - Kermit H. (1911-1966); twins Wayne C (1912-1998) and Wendell E. (1912-1981); and Mildred M.(1914-1998). After Harley's death, the family was separated. I beleive they had lived in Carbon, Clay Co, Indiana. He alledgedly ran a general store there. She may have been a nurse.
Harley was the son of Alfred PELL (1849-1928) and Marena EMERSON. Alfred was the son of William Frizzle Pell (1825 Lewis Co, KY-1908 Clay Co, IN) and Nancy McMILLAN(1832 NC - ?) who wed 1848 and had 11 children in Clay Co, IN. William Frizzle was the son of John Pell (1797-1872) and Rebecca ALES(1804-1860), who had 7 children.
Emily's parents were James YOCUM and Adeline ROMAS(1842-1915). They may have moved to Clay Co, IN from Kentucky.
Wendell was my father-in-law. Any information on these individuals, their ancestors and descendents will be appreciated.

Hi,
My Barbara did emigrate to Milwaukee, probably about 1848 (questionable due to really bad census records) and I believe she was born c. 1844. According to one source she emigrated with her parents, Andreas and Anna (Hampel)Romas, but I cannot find any trace of these people in Milwaukee. I think that was a lie because I found Barbara listed as a 15 yr. old servant in the 1960 census. I haven't found any other information about this woman! In addition I have found the name spelled both Romas and Romes. All census records indicate that she was born in Bavaria or Germany but family history tells me that she was from Alsace-Lorraine.

Does anything sound familiar?

Susan

Hi Barbara,
I'd like to know more about the Romas family you are researching. My Barbara was born c1849 in Germany/Bavaria (according to census records). I have found nothing else about her origins other than the fact that her parents were supposedly Andrew (Andreas) Romas and Anna Hampel (Hempel?). This woman has been very elusive so I'm anxious to follow-up on any possible Romas or Romes lead. Thanks.

Susan
