Thank You. I spoke with 1 of the kids of my great Grand parents and he sai that Rogasinski was there name in poland and that it was changed many years ago. There name was also Rogoz' and Rogus. They may have had the exact name that you are referring to also. I found Rogasinski in the holocaust death records over 1,000 times(Also Rogosinski). I have wondered if they were Jewish(even if roman catholic in the states)and that's why the name was changed so often. I have them as Rudolph(f)and Lora Rogoz before 1920, but as Adolph and Laura Rogus in 1930. Family members are the same. Nothing is found after that and the relative I spoke to only knew them as Adolph and Valeria. Strange. Let me know if you see or know any thing else that might help me. Thanks again.

The 1940 census incorrectly spells our name as Roguse in the entry listed for 709 Schuyler St., Syracuse, NY. At that time, my grandfather Josef, the head of household, spelled the name in its original form - Rogusz.

I have recently located in Brazil, a Rogus family with roots in Poland or Russia.

His parents were from Poland and settled in Syracuse, NY. Our family is Roman Catholic. The 1940 Census incorrectly spells our name as Roguse.

Hi,
My Dads last name was also Rogus. His Father came from Poland along with His Father and Mother(my great Grandparent). There name was originally Rogoz in Poland. He spelled Rogoz in 1920 and Rogus in 1930 census's. It is noted that he has Jewish records under his name, but I have not searched this yet. It is also told by another poster here that Rogoz was changed by Germany to Rogusz in the camps(holocaust). I was only told as a young girl that their name was Rogus and that a "z" was dropped off their name when they came to the USA. They did not go through camps so I don't understand all that yet. Hope this helps some.

I am writing to add to my last post. I was searching records today and going through My Great Grandparents Rudolph and Laura(Lora) Rogus(z) and found that they came from Poland in 1905. Also they wrote on 1 year of the census AUSTRIA/POLAND as where they were from. I guess Austria became a part of poland later. I also found out that on the 1920 Federal Census that they used the name ROGOZ and on later census's...Rogus. Also by his name it said Jewish record. I don't understand what that means unless there exits a record of him being Jewish? I have never heard this before. I am now trying to find out if that is truth about the Rogus name. ROGOZ must be the name before changes after the immigration.

You're welcome.

How unfortunate that no place of birth on those early arrival manifest. The only other place I can think of that should have a place of birth would be a church they attended and had the children baptized in. Maybe you can take a detour and follow paper trail of the neighbor of your ancestor or a godparent surname. Most likely a small wild goose chase but our ancestors went to a place where someone from the family or the village was residing.
Did Josef had to fill out a draft registration form? By any chance was he naturalized after 1906? The 1906 naturalization intent and petition asks for a place of birth.

Thank you, indeed. (A little story: Since 1972, I have spent and continue to spend a lot of time living and working in Brazil -- where there are a number of Polish communities and a fair number of Brazilians of Polish descent. A few years ago I was thrilled to find a business there named Rogus, a travel agency in São Paulo. I sent emails to the firm making inquiries without any response which I thought odd. After a while I tried again. This time I received an apologetic email from the owner who explained that the name of his company had nothing to do with a family name, common to both us. Rather it was simply a combination of the first names of his two sons, ROberto and GUStavo.)

Re: Rogus Family Name

Dear David and other Roguzes,
It has been recently discovered that my family surname, Roguz, was originally spelled "Rogoz" (closed "u", dot over "z") in Polish and pronounced, "RO-goosh". A surname researcher mentioned that the name "Rogoz" comes from the word "rogoza" (meaning reed mace or cat's tail). He mentioned that these materials were used to make rugs or mats, and it is believed that early Rogoz ancestors were possibly makers or merchants of rugs and/or mats. Other known spellings include: Rogoz, Rogoza, Rogusz, Roguz, Rogus, and Rougas. The name was changed for pronunciation and spelling ease in the new American culture.

My Roguz/Rogoz ancestors were from Skotniki Gorne, Poland (I'm the sister of Dana, in the previous post) and I am looking for any information on Maria Rogoz or Piotr Rogoz, children of Wincenty Rogoz and Katarzyna Pasternak Rogoz of Skotniki Gorne. Both Maria and Piotr were probably born in the 1890s and were siblings of my great-grandfather, Jan, who emigrated to the U.S in 1913. We also know nothing of their parents, Wincenty Rogoz and Katarzyna Pasternak Rogoz.

Thanks, Denise Roguz Fleming
David,
My maiden name was Rogusz. Originaly the name was spelled Rogoz. During WWII, my father was uprooted from Poland by the Germans and was placed in a work camp in Germany. The Germans changed the name to Rogusz. My father Adam was from a village outside of Krakow - Czubrowice. My mother was also taken from Poland to a work camp - Windflecken. That is where they met, married, and I was born (1949). We came to the United States in 1950. We settled in Cleveland, Ohio. I now live in California.
You can contact me at:
Irene Bialecki
3639 Candor St.
Lakewood, CA. 90712
peace408@aol.com

Hi David,
Yes, I believe we've corresponded before. Thanks for your email! What do you know of your Rogus roots? Which part of Galicia were they from? Maybe my ancestors will be from the same area ;-)

This is the only message board I've found that has other people searching for "Rogus".

Wilkes Barre isn't far from Hazleton.

May

Nothing yet. I've hit a roadblock, so, what I've done is send for his SSI. That seems to be my best bet, thanks to another suggestion on another forum. I just have to be patient with that :-) In the meantime, I'm still doing searches because it's fun and because I don't quit until I've exhausted all of my possibilities or until someone points me in another direction. Also, I'm looking back into my ancestry.com shoebox and other documents I've saved. Maybe there are things I've forgotten about. The more I do, the more I learn, and I'm grateful for everyone who has helped my along the way.

I do know there is Roman and Byzantine Catholic, and I find it fascinating to learn that, if he IS from Galicia (I still don't know that for certain—I'm just going on what my Mom THINKS she remembers)then, as you say, that would mean he is Ruthenian! Recently, I've learned from another forum, what "Ruthenian" means. Never heard of that before. I was competely unaware of the history of Galicia (still am) and it's very very interesting!

Thanks for the inquiry! Good luck with your searches as well!

May

Hi Dana,
I just read your 2003-5 message on the Ancestry.com message board about your family. My mom's maiden name is Rogus. She has no information on her family in Poland. I've been trying to find out more about where her ancestors lived in Poland. Her grandfather, Joseph Rogus, arrived in Pennsylvania in 1890. He was born in 1868. Immigration records say he was from Austria (south central Poland). That's all I've found about him.

I'd like to hear more about your family. What information do you have?

Thanks much!
May Lane

Hi Michal,
I would love more info on the Rogus family from Poland. My maternal great-grandfather was Joseph Rogus (as far as I know, that is how he spelled it). He and his wife, Sophia Stellmacht came to Pennsylvania around 1890 and settled in Harleigh. He was a miner. According to my mom, she remembers hearing something about Galicia or Silisia Poland as the area from which Joseph came. That's about all the info I have.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for your reply? What's your first name (or "ghost name")so I can at least address you?

Wow. You've given me alot of information!

To answer your questions:
Yes, I've found Joseph Rogus' family in the 1900, 1910, 1920 censuses, even with the misspellings. I have those saved in my ancestry family tree and was just on last night double checking some things about the Rogus clan. I'm almost certain there's something staring me in the face that would give me a clue, but I just don't see it. I'm still such a neophyte at this, but it's enjoyable. Makes me wonder if I would have liked to have been a detective!

Nothing with regards to obituaries (I was actually researching that last night)

Thanks to the good people on the Lithuanian yahoo group to which I belong, I've learned to use wildcards (R?g?s, etc.) and have been searching that way, but no luck.

The only tombstones I've located are on the maternal Lithuanian side: Kukaitis. Since this past summer/fall, I've put all of my energy into searching for the Petuska/ Kukaitis family info. I was most successful finding the Petuska side! Of course, I didn't do that alone: the Lithuanian folks are a rare, generous group of people and I've learned so much from them. My research skills have improved greatly because of them.

I bookmarked the halgal site looooong ago and had forgotten about it. Thanks for posting it and thanks for all of the other websites you've pointed me too!

Now that I'm on springbreak (I'm a teacher), I have a whole week to devote to research. Is IS addicting! I'm hoping to start printing out all of the documents I have. I'm a visual learner (I'm also an artist) and I think that would help me alot to see it as one unit, from a "hawk eye" perspective.

I've also been thinking about my phone call to PA churches: I know I've called several about the Kukaitis family, but I'm not remembering if I asked about Rogus family records. Hmmmmmmmmm. Maybe I ought to try that again and send the churches a donation. I suppose if I'd taken notes, rather than hold all of this in my head, it wouldn't be a mystery. :-/ Both the Kukaitis and Rogus families settled in the Hazelton area. You would think that it wouldn't be difficult to find SOME sort of record.

I've rambled enough.....

What you've provided me will keep me plenty busy and I thank you very much for these leads!

Peace,
May

I have a lot to play with here and for that I'm very grateful.

To answer a previous question: yes, I've found ship manifests, but unfortunately, they don't list the place of birth, just the country (Poland).
Rogus/Rogucki

I found a change-of-name record where the name "Rogucki" was changed to "Rogus". Record was dated 1951. Family moved from Ambridge, Pa. to Indiana County, Pa. Does not give origin of name, but I am assuming it is Polish.

Not related to me, but thought you "Rogus" researchers might be interested!
