My family name, Rogus, is of Polish origin and was originally spelled by my grandparents ROGUSZ. It exists in both forms today in the Warsaw telephone directory. My grandparents immigrated from Poland at the turn of the 19th-20th century and settled in Syracuse, NY where my father -- Frank Joseph Rogus was born during WWI. I was born there in 1947. Frank had a brother, Joseph, also born in Syracuse. Both brothers have since passed way. There are more Rogus families in the U.S. and throughout the world than I had originally thought. Not all the Rogus surnames are Polish in origin. I've run across the name in Australia among lists of convicts deported there from England in the 18th century from a town in Britain which contains the same name.
When I was a boy in Syracuse, I attended the Polish parish Catholic school and studying Polish -- most of which I sadly have forgotten -- was mandatory.
There are documents available in my family's "archives" to shed some further light on where in Poland my grandparents emigrated from, but I have yet to reserve enough time to adequately research it all. I would be willing to share whatever I learn here and ask that anyone with further information do the same.
