I have found my lost Polish Roguz relatives (thanks to this website) and thought I'd share my info with all of you, in hopes that it could help you find yours, or you may even be related.
My maiden name was spelled "Roguz", though I had other relatives here in the US who spelled it Rogusz, so I naturally assumed my last name was shortened from Rogusz. Apparently, my name comes from "Rogoz" with an accent over the "o" (a "closed" u) and a dot over the z. In Polish this is pronounced "RO-goosh" just as Rogusz would. I guess in Polish there are many ways to spell a name that sounds like "RO-goosh", and that's just 2 of them. The name Rogoz comes from the noun rogoza, which means "reed-mace, cat's tail". It can also mean "doormat" The name must have begun as a nickname for an ancestor associated with this plant or with doormats. I received this information via William Hoffman who is the author of "Polish Surnames: Origins & Meanings" You can e-mail him at
wfhoffman@prodigy.net. He has been very helpful to me in my research of various Polish family surnames.
My Rogoz ancestors originiated in the Busko-Zdroj area of Poland in a town called Skotniki Gorne, in south central Poland. My great-grandfather Jan was one of 4 children of Wincenty and Katarzyna (Pasternak) Rogoz. He was the only one to emmigrate to the US as far as I know. His sister Franciszka's decendents still live in that area of Poland. His brother Piotr, moved to Szeczecin Poland, and supposedly his decendents are there. His other sister Maria died at age 18.
I hope this info has helped somebody! Look up my family tree posted in the world family tree on this site (it needs to be updated)
