Hi Christina -

Always great to meet a new cousin! Yes, your dad and I have emailed in the past. How is he doing? Please give him my best. My email is stonehouseresearch at gmail.com.

Have you or your dad done DNA testing? It's always best to test the eldest generation when you can. I'd love to compare our DNA results and see where we match - that would identify those bits of DNA as coming from the Bair line. It might help us solve the brick wall beyond William Bair. Email me if you can.

Cathi Desmarais

Arch C. Roden from Lawrence County Alabama, service in the Civil War

I am looking to see if I have correct information on Arch C. Roden that was in the 27th Alasobama Infantry and died as a PW at Camp Douglas IL...the LCA has him listed as Arch Roten...he was married first to my Great Grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Freeman, the daughter Clarissa J. Roden Canup has her listed as a "Freemore" on her death certificate. Arch and Mary E. had three children from the records that I have found...one I can find no information on, the first born I guess a J. Roden, the Clarissa J. Roden, and last a son Arch Roden....I have pictures of them all some are family specific and some from LCA archives in Moulton Alabama. It is quite interesting that Arch the first husband of Mary E. Freeman, and my Great Grandfather James M. Randolph the second husband of Mary were both in the same unit in the Civil War, also Mary E. father Johnson R. Freeman, and two brother's in law were also in the same unit. I have picture of Clarissa (Roden) and John Lawrence Canup's family, also what I think to be the family or Arch the son Roden and Sally Kirby, I am mainly looking for information to confirm what I feel is pretty solid information and am trying to find out where Mary Elizabeth Freeman Roden Randolph is buried. My thoughts are in Ferguson Cemetery in Hatton Alabama. In addition to the Roden information when Mary and JM Randolph were married they had 5 additional Randolph children which I am a descendant from...I am also looking for information on the two oldest daughters Mary and Susan Randolph of that family...any information would greatly be appreciated, and I am willing to share any pictures copies and other information that I have....thanks for any information that is provided.

Lee Anne, you have more information than I do. The only thing I can add is something you may not want to know. That is, there is some question regarding the name Mondy. My father Samuel Kelly Mondy told the story, which I personally heard him tell, that his father used the name Wilson and married under that name. That he then took his wife's sister as a second wife and told her his real name was Mondy, that she was to use that name. Sam had a half brother named Wade Wilson. It is known to me that the two brothers argued as to which name was correct, Wilson or Mondy. I am only telling you this to let you know there may be distant relatives named Wilson. Gena Mondy Delaney is my older sister and may or may not choose to confirm this information.

Richard D. Mondy

Hi Ralph,

I would love to have your help and appreciate so much your offering to help. Please let me know if the information below is what you have. Whether your information is different or the same, it would help greatly to see what you have. Please contact me at lacenter at comcast.net.

I have David McDuff "Mac" Roden and Elizabeth "Eliza" Capps as the parents of my grandmother Eliza Ozella (nee Roden) and your grandfather William McDuff Roden / Rhodes. I really appreciated meeting Jena and having her confirm for me some things.

Also, I have the parents of David McDuff "Mac" Roden as John F. Roden and Rachel Simmons who married in Benton County MS on 20 September 1875 as D. M. Rhodes and Eliza Capps with W. H. Redfearn as surety and the Justice of the Peace who married them. There is a story surrounding the reason for Roden in our line being changed to Rhodes. Our branch of the Rodens changed their surname back to Roden. Some publications carried some information about this in articles on the Buck Island Massacre. I have a little more information if you are interested.

I have not found a will for the parents of Elizabeth "Eliza" Capps, but I can make a case for them being James Washington Capps and Elizabeth Davis (Davis was in some family trees and needs to be validated). Brenda helped me find Eliza's parents.

My daughter and I have also taken the Roden line back several more generations with the help of Lee Comer, family trees online and my daughter's research to try to validate them as ancestors. It would help considerably to have your help.

Lee Anne

Have you made any progress in locating Tarleton? I am looking for him, too. Well, more for his wife Nancy Jennings. She is a sister to my husband's ancestor. Nancy's father was living in he area of Spartanburg, S.C before they left for Kentucky around 1800. Nancy was born in Union County. Do you know if they had any children? Thanks.

Elias Roden is my husband's gggrandfather. I have found that his wife was Nancy Groves born 1822-1858. He moved from Tennessee, to Mississippi and finally to Texas. Family says he is buried in the Salem Cemetery in Halletsville, Texas where James is buried ,but that he and Nancy's headstones have sunk into the ground. If you look on FindAGrave.com and search for James, there is a picture and a story.

I can find a couple of references to possibly Ezekiel Roden born in 1774 in South Carolina, but I'm not convinced of the documentation. No mention of his mother.

My husband's family of Rodens are from the Yoakum, Texas area. His grandfather was Jay Milam Roden, his ggrandfather was James Isaac Roden (buried in Halletsville) and his ggrandfather was Elias Roden (believed to be buried in the Halletsville cemetery as well, but apparently the headstones have sunk into the ground according to family members. Jay Milam Roden had four sons, Clarence, Morris, Jay Iry, and Weldon Ray, all deceased. Weldon Ray was my father in law.

Thanks for the message - yes, time does roll by, but six years is nothing to us family historians, is it?
In the meantime I've learned that our Roden family were farmers in County Tyrone, Ireland, in the early 19th. cent. Nothing is known about them before then. They may have been settlers from England or Scotland, because Roden isn't reckoned to be an Irish name. Some of the family have remained in northern Ireland to this day; others, incl my grandmother's family, went off to the West Indies. There are none there now. We do have 3 individuals in the tree named George Roden, but they've nothing to do with the subject of this thread.

My great grandfather was James William Roden born in 1858. He married my great grandmother Lillie Matilda Goforth born in 1867 or 1868. They had 3 son's , James, Thomas Hamilton (my grandfather) and Clifton.
But my great grandfather James was married to my great grandmother's older sister and had many children. One I especially herd spoken of was a step sister named Purdy.
After my great grandfather's first wife past on ,he then married my great grandmother, Lillie Matilda Goforth.
Both the Rodens and Goforths had large families and married amongst family members.
I have certified copy of my great grandparents marriage certificate and my grandfather's SS# application.
