James Robinson, Yorkshire to South Carolina c. 1670

Hi there, my family tree stops cold with James Robinson. We know he arrived in Charleston, SC around 1670, and believe he came from Western Yorkshire. I've found some records that could be close, but not quite (missing this by a decade of two). Does anyone have any information or recommendations on sources? Thank you so much!
Andy Robinson

Hello again,

Thank you very much for the information about John Robinson. Your information has filled in a missing piece of the family jigsaw. He was one of my great-great grandfathers. I only have sketchy information about his career.

I have also found six children for Zachariah Robinson. According to census records, all of the sons, with the exception of John, stayed around Worcester/Staffordshire. The Robinson clan seems to have been fairly prolific in these areas for several centuries. As they tended to use similar names for their children over the generations it is difficult to sort out who is who - have you had any luck in this regard? The Chance family also goes back quite a way in Worcester and there is quite a bit of information about them through Ancestry.

Thanks again,
Liz

Noticed your post on Col Robinson. Would like to get additional historical info on his life. I have transcribed his very extensive obituary from the Cumberland Times and would be happy to forward it to you. I was born in Patterson Creek, WV and, in fact, lived directly across the road from Col Robinson's home. My Aunt and Uncle owned the home for several years. Unfortunately, the current owners have allowed it to fall into disrepair. Would you happen to have a picture of it in the late 1800's or early 1900's. Also have a letter written by J. Humbird Smith to Aunt Grace that I have also transcribed. It is an interesting historical view of Patterson Creek.
Please provide your direct e-mail address and I'll send you the data that I have.
Bill Anderson
customer1st@bellsouth.net
770.454.8475

Hello Liz
Yes we have the same info.
John Robinson died in Tientsin China on 3rd April 1905.
He had been unwell for a while before that. He is buried in Tientsin in the same grave as Alice. That should be the other way around of course, as she survived him. I have a photo of the grave somewhere. I saw an obituary written by the Methodists, which gives an interesting insight into his career. Zachariah had 6 children that I know of. John and Alice had four daughters.
Can you tell me your relationship to John Robinson? John was one of my great-grandfathers.
Best Wishes CK
Hi,

There doesn't seem to be much activity from the Robinson side of things - perhaps we are the only two looking at present!

Zachariah and Mary Ann (nee Chance) were married on 14-5-1838 in Halesowen, Worcestershire. He was the son of Benjamin and Sarah and Mary Ann was the daughter of John and Caroline - all from Worcestershire.

Do you know when and where John Robinson died? Alice died in China in 1918 but I can't find John after that.

Regards,
Liz

To all the Robinson descendants of Hewick,

I hope that everyone is aware that I did not sell "Hewick" in Urbanna, Virginia out of choice... It broke my heart to give up all I had worked so hard to preserve. I owned it from 1988 to 2005. Due to a divorce, the court ordered me to sell Hewick and split the proceeds with my former husband, even though I had purchased and preserved it with my own money and sweat labor. I loved restoring Hewick and poured my heart and soul into it! It will always be in my thoughts, and my two youngest daughters and I hope it is lovingly cared for in the future. I did my best to save it for prosterity.

Helen at hewick1@yahoo.com

Re: Looking for information on Alfred S Robinson

I am sorry that I missed your inquiry before today. Yes, Alfred S ROBINSON is part of my line and I have included a little information on this family.

How are you connected to this line? Please get back to me at your earliest convenience.
Kay

Alfred S. ROBINSON was born on 6 Jul 1836 in North Thonop/Royalton, Windsor, VT. He died1 on 10 Aug 1918 in Grand Rapids, Wood, WI. The cause of death was Cerebral Hemorrhage. He was buried on 13 Aug 1918 in Grand Rapids, Wood, WI. Alfred was the son of Amos ROBINSON, JR and his second wife, Lois SAFFORD.

The Grand Rapids Tribune, Grand Rapids, WI,
August 15, 1918, Volume XLV, NO. 12, p. 1.

DEATH OF A. S. ROBINSON

A. S. Robinson, one of the old and respected citizens of this vicinity, died at the home of his son,
N. H. Robinson, Saturday. Mr. Robinson had been in failing health for some time past owing to advancing
age, although he was able to be part of the time until a short time ago.
Mr. Robinson was a native of Vermont where he was born in 1836 and was consequently 82
years old at the time of his death. He came to Wisconsin when a mere lad and has lived at Grand Rapids
during the past 40 years. He was a man that took more than an ordinary interest in scientific subjects and
was well read along many lines, and until he partically (sic) lost his hearing several years ago, was
always active in matters that were calculated to be of advantage to his neighbors and the community in
general. His wife died about 14 years ago since which time he has made his home with his son much of
the time.
The funeral was held Tuesday from the home, Rev. C. C. Becker of the Methodist church
conducting the service. He is survived by one son, N. H. Robinson, two daughters, Mrs. E. A. Chapman of
this city, and Mrs. Frank Albert of Detroit, Michigan.

Alfred married2 Armina HUBBARD on 14 May 1861 in Church of Coe United Brethren, Canoe Creek, Rock Island, IL. Armina was born in Jul 1837 in IL. She died on 27 Dec 1904 in Grand Rapids, Wood, WI.

At half past ten on the evening of December the 27th at the home of her sister, Mrs. Cleo McMurphy,
Hillsdale, Ill. The spirit of Mrs. Armina Robinson the wife of A. S. Robinson, winged its flight from earthly
scenes of pain and suffering to the light and joy of those realms where the shades of night never fall.” She
had been ailing for some time with complications of liver and stomach troubles.
She was lovingly attended by her niece until the arrival of her youngest daughter, who was with her at
the time of her death, and who did all in their power to alleviate her suffering, employing the best of
medical skill, and used all probable means to again return her to health but without avail. Armina Hubbard
was born July 5, 1858, at Ft. Dearborn now known as Chicago, where her father was employed on
government works. At the expiration of his year’s contract, helped build the first farm house in Chicago.
Shortly after removed to Fort Armstrong, situated on the lower end of Rock Island and now used as an
arsenal for the manufacturing of ordinances and small arms, he had a contract from the government and
when completed in 1840 pre-empted a half section of land in the Rock River Valley where he afterward
made his home. Here Armina grew to womanhood. In 1860, she met Alfred S. Robinson in Moline, IL,
while attending a boarding school. In 1861, they were married and went by Menasha, Wis, where he was
engaged in the manufacture of furniture, they remained here until 1868 when having lost their entire plant
by fire they moved to Dexterville, (Wood County, WI) where Mr. Robinson took charge of a Stove factory
owned by Svmns, Henvlit & Ielles. In 1879, again meeting with disaster they bought a farm in Centralia,
(Wood County, WI) where they since have lived and raised their family. As an issue of this marriage five
children were born those left to mourn her loss are a husband and three children, Newton Hubbard, Lois
Beassle Chapman of this city, and Lura Tilman/Tlmean Ed of Milwaukee. There was a singular
coincidence connected with this union, that probably does not occur in a thousand issues. The husband
and the wife’s birthday coming on the same day of the month and the same month of the year, Mr.
Robinson being exactly two years the oldest.
When 16 years of age, Mrs. Robinson joined with the United Brethren church in what is now known as
the Rock River Church. Shortly after moving to Centralia, (Wood County, WI) she became a member of
the Congregational church.
Mrs. Robinson in many respects was a remarkable and talented women in having assisted in the
library work of the farmer Institute in this and neighboring counties, and also typist and correspondent for
several agricultural publications. Of her it may truly be said a “true and noble christian women has gone.”

Alfred and Armina had the following children:

2	F	i.	Lucy ROBINSON was born in 1866 in Neenah, WI. She died before 1880.

3	M	ii.	Newton Hubbard ROBINSON was born in 1868 in Neenah Menasha, WI.
Newton married Carrie ALTZ before 1900.

4	F	iii.	Bessie ROBINSON was born in 1869 in Neenah Menasha, WL.

5	F	iv.	Laura ROBINSON was born in 1880 in Wisconsin Rapids, Wood, WI.

Re: Robinson Family

According to the death certificate of Sarah Jane Robinson, she was born on February 14, 1846 and died on November 19, 1917 in Wahkon, Mille Lacs County. The certificate indicates that her father was Dave Fustle and Rebecca Whitlatch, but the death certificate does not indicate the location in Iowa where she was born. Sarah Jane Fussell is seen residing in Linn County, Iowa in 1870, with her husband William Robinson.

The odd thing about this claim of parentage is that Rebecca Whitlatch was born about 1831 in Pennsylvania and was residing in Linn County, Iowa with her father, John Whitlatch, and mother Anna Mann. She was single until about 1856, when according to the Iowa State Census, Rebecca Whitlatch married Peter Mann. They would later move to Steele County, Minnesota. Our subject Sarah Jane Fussell is not seen with this family in any census records.

Meanwhile it is known that a man named David E. Fussell, was residing in Linn County, Iowa in 1846 during the time that Sarah Jane Fussell was born. According to the Portrait & Biographical Album of Fayette County, Iowa, "The year 1844 witnessed the arrival of Mr. Fussell in this county [Fayette County, Iowa], he taking a claim four miles west of West Union, but after a short time he returned to Ohio. In the spring of 1846 he again came West, but having been away from his claim two years it was jumped, and he located in Linn County. Three years later he settled at Bear Grove in Smithfield Township." Since prior to 1850, David Fussell, was residing in Fayette County, Iowa with his wife and family. Sarah Jane Fussell is not seen with them in the 1850 and 1860 census records.

My THEORY is that David E. Fussell was obviously in Linn County, Iowa in 1845, and had an affair with Rebecca Whitlatch. This explains the names indicated on the death certificate of Sarah Jane Fussell-Robinson. The problem is, where is she in 1850 and 1860? She is not with either the Whitlatch or Fussell families.

Sarah Jane Robinson, is buried with no tombstone at Foster Cemetery, Onamia, Mille Lacs County, Minnesota. She is believed to be buried next to her husband William Robinson (October 12, 1828 - April 7, 1924). William Robinson served in Company H 14th Iowa during the Civil War.

Richard,
I believe I am related down out of John Robinson from Exeter NH if the family tree I found is correct. My line is from John Robinson > Jonathon > Joseph > Nathaniel > Gideon (1) > Gideon (2) Robinson. If I have my information right, Gideon 1 was born 1755 in Epping NH & Died in Freedom Maine Aug 1822. Gideon 2 was born 1799 in Meredith NH but I don't have a death date for him, just that he died in Dover Maine. Would you know if Gideon 2 & his wife Anna Fuller had a son, Benjamin F Robinson born about 1823/24? I have found that Gideon & Anna Fuller were married in 1822 in Freedom Maine.
I'm related to Benjamin F Robinson. I just learned his name through a genealogy society that works in the Dover Maine area. Benjamin married Sarah E Fuller in Boston Mass. on or abt 3 Sept 1851. They had 1 son, William Henry Robinson born Oct 1853. Benjamin died 5 June 1854 in Boston. It was reported in the Piscataquis Observer that Benjamin was "formerly of Dover". He & Sarah are my gg grandparents. Sarah remarried 2 more times & moved to Midland MI before the 1880 census. Wm Henry Robinson & his wife, Rosilla Labree moved to Midland MI also after 1880 (after her parents died), but before 1886 as their last child, my grandmother, was born in Midland County MI.
I am also interested in Anna & Sarah Fuller's family. I think that Sarah's father & Anna could be brother & sister.
If you can help me at all I would greatly appreciate it. Sarah's father was Jonathon Fuller b 1796 or 1799, d 1877 in Dover ME, married to Jemima Cookson & Anna's parents are Abraham Fuller 1770-1829 & Susan Sylvester.
my email is hargerlm@yahoo.com
Thank You Lisa

My grand dad was Sir JB Robinson. He was in Ceylon during the Anglo Boer war and was married to a Anna Magdalena Brits lady. That is about all the information that I have at this stage. All I knew is that he was a SIR - title he got from the queen of England.

I am trying to find any information on Gerald H Bradley (known as Ned to his family)born 1930 in Guidpost bedlington, Northumberland, England. It is thought he went to Australia to work in 1950/60s at Womara air base, and may or may not have returned to England. Any information would be great.

Keith

I doubt it. I haven't researched my husband's Robinson line; but today I did locate the Lee E. Robinson family in the 1900 and 1910 census in Calcasieu, Louisiana. There is no son named Lee enumerated. By 1920 the children of Lee E. Robinson and Elizabeth Irons are living alone in the household in Jefferson Davis Parish. Perhaps their parents died.
