GGrandfather James Roche born appro 1840 Whitegate, parish Aghada, Cork. Was in R.N. Married Ellen Fleming 1865, Aghada. Two known children, Margaret my grandmother 1867, her sister Mary Ann born Cobh 1869. Margaret's wedding cert from 1894 says her father deceased. A family story says James Roche left his family in Cobh immigrated to America and started a new family, perhaps soon after 1869. He may have used the first name Thomas. Don't know when he left R.N, when or where he died. No other record of him so far. Does this sound familar to anybody?

If you are still researching? My grandmother was Kate Roche, father I think Thomas. I never met her. ( She was married in the early 1900s to Nicholas Cummins at Cobh cathedral. My father was one of their children. We went to visit his cousins in Aghada when I was little. I think he said his mother was originally from Aghada but lived at Carrignafoy in Cobh with her husband.
I did research once and found that Carrignafoy was leased to Thomas Roche her father.

My great grandfather was William Patrick Roche, born in Whitegate, Cork in 1839. His father was james Roche. William joined the RN when he was 15 after his mother died. james married again and emigrated to America with his new wife and other children. William never saw his family again. he ended up on the Tea Clippers sailing to China etc.
