Great info. I am new to researching my Risinger Lineage, but I do know I am a descendant of Jacob Mariah Risinger by way of his son John Franklin Risinger, then his son Julius William Risinger, then his son Lee Risinger, then his son Royce I Risinger, then his son Royce R Risinger and through his son my dad Royce I Risinger. By the time it came to Julius he was born or married in Bibb Alabama and settled in Gonzales county Texas. His son Lee settled into Bandera, Texas. They stay in Bandera till my grandfather Royce R Risinger and his siblings were born. Then all of his siblings stayed around San Antonio, Texas area. My grandfather went to Hawaii met my grandmother had my dad and decided to live in California. To my knowledge he was the only Risinger sibling to leave Texas.

If anyone has anymore clear info from Jacob Mariah back into Germany it would be much appreciated ... Email me: jrancestry82@gmail.com or private message me.

I have found and have quite a bit of info on my Dads fathers side of the family.

My grandpas name was Royce Ruben Risinger. His mother and father were Leona D. Lewis and Royce I Risinger. Royce I Risinger's father was David Lee Risinger or Lee Risinger and Georgiana Hay. I know Georgiana's father was George Hay from Scotland. Lee's father was Julius Risinger .

If there is further info anyone has or if we are related somehow let me know.

Thomas Vitus was the only son of John George. It stands to reason (and no I don't have ABSOLUTE proof), but it stands to reason that Jacob could have ONLY descended from him. According to SC Archives records, Fite had a large family. He was first married to a woman named Susannah, and they had at least two children (not named) in a land grant that I found. That would have been around the time that Jacob was born. Susannah must have died a few years later, because Fite was second married to a widow, Mary Mulberry Henry. She was first married to William Mulberry, and second to Frederick Henry, Sr. He was married to Mary when he fought as a Loyalist (British sympathizer) in the American Revolution. Mary also had children from Mr. Mulberry, and according to an 1801 document that I found at the SC Archives, he took his approximately 13 year old step-son (George Mulberry) to Jamaica with him. Since Fite was a Loyalist, after the fall of Charleston in 1781, he supposedly fled to Jamaica. I've been in contact with a Jamaica researcher in Jamaica, and she said there is no record of them being there whatsoever, no Fite, no George Mulberry, and neither are listed in ANY early shipping documents.

And that's where that stands! So, no, I have no proof that Jacob was Fite's son, but the current research fits.
Wow. You are quoting my research! ;o) The original spelling of the name was Reissinger, as written in David and Catherine Black Risinger's Bible, which I have a transcription of (and hereby giving Dennis Risinger credit for copying that and creating a family history book back in the 1970's due to one of the last Risinger family reunions here in SC).

I have been in contact with two German researchers, who offered me information for free (one which I told that I could not afford to pay him, and he did the research anyway.) His name is Karl Greim and he lives in the State (Stadt in German) of Bayern (Bavaria) Germany. He went to the Regensburg Library and researched any and all John George Reissingers listed, and only based on what religion I thought he was, because that's how Germans lived back then in Germany. They lived around people that shared their religion, which there were only two in Germany at that time: Evangelical Lutherans and Catholics. Our John George was definitely Evangelical Lutheran, considering that his gr-grandson (David) was instrumental in founding an Evangelical Lutheran (German Reformed) church here in SC. Here's an excerpt from my file that explains the above:

"THE GERMAN ORIGINS OF JOHN GEORGE REISSINGER:

I've been in contact with several German researchers in Germany who have Reissinger (Riessinger, Reisinger, etc.) origins. They all agree on the translation of Feight Reissinger's name Tomfit to be Thomas Vitus Reissinger. Vitus means Holy man in German. They also told me that in order to trace where John George Reissinger may have been born, I first had to look at what religion I thought he was. Not everyone's place of origin in Germany was mentioned on the Snow Rowand passenger list, so knowing that would help. Considering that David Risinger and his descendants were instrumental in starting Salem Lutheran Church and the subsequent Cedar Grove Evangelical Lutheran Church in Leesville, Lexington Co., SC, I would assume that his ancestors were Evangelical Lutheran. I was told by Herr (Mr.) Norbert Ernst (a German Reissinger descendant) that all of the Reissingers came from Passau, Bayern (Bavaria), Germany. They lived on a mountain called Reising Mountain. Another researcher actually looked up John George Reissinger for me in old church records at the Regensburg Library in Regensburg, Bayern, Germany. The following is correspondence I received from Herr Karl Greim:

3-17-2006
Dear Dana,
I found the registration of baptism of Johann Georg Reisinger, baptized on 1724-03-13 in the church book of Walderbach (near Regensburg). All persons, who are baptized in Waldersbach are Roman Catholics. I found only one sister of Johann Georg Reisinger: Anna Barbara Reisinger, baptized on 1725-03-19. There is a remark in the church book: the parents are without home. The professon of the father is a day-labourer. Day-labourers are mobile. I found no further informations about the parents. I suppose, they removed out of the parish of Walderbach.
Another family: father is Johann Reisinger, a farmer, mother is Barbara. I found seven childs and there are two Johann Georg: Johann Georg, baptized 1719-10-09 and Johann Georg, baptized 1724-05-20.
Another family: father is Jacob Reisinger, a farmer, mother is Catharina, I found two childs, and there is a son Georg, baptized 1722-08-13.
I found further Reisinger families between 1719 and 1733: father Johann, a farmer, father Johann Georg a farmer, father Caspar (his profession is unknown) and father Vitus (his profession is also unknown), but no child Johann Georg.
There are many Johann Georg Reisingers and we can not be sure to have the right Johann Georg.
Is it a better way to research for the baptism of Tomfit Reisinger? Is he born in Germany? Congratulation for your translation. Tomfit is surely Thomas Vitus in German. Or is it better to research for the marriage of Johann Georg Reisinger with Margaret. Did they marry in Germany?
There are many Reisingers. We must be cautious.
Before we invest further time: where did you have the information, that Johann Georg Reisinger, who emigrated to America, comes from Walderbach? Is there a passenger list? How old was Johann Georg Reisinger, when he emigrated in the year 1752 ? How old, when he died?
Sincerely
Karl Greim

4-20-2006
Dear Dana,
I suppose, that your Johann Georg Reissinger comes from Württemberg, because he was surely a Evangelican Lutheran. In the attachment, you find a map of Germany in the years 1608 - 1635. In the red duchies, there lived Evangelical Lutherans, in the blue duchies, there lived Roman Catholics. Germany was not united in a single state until 1871. In Württemberg, there lived Evangelical Lutherans, in Bavaria (Walderbach belongs to Bavaria) there lived Roman Catholics.
I found the shipping list with your Johann Georg Reissinger. I study all names and I further research for Reissinger, especially in Württemberg. You here from me, but it can take a long time, a few months.
You can visit my web-site: www.ancestors.in.bava.ria.ms.
Sincerely
Karl Greim

That was my last correspondence with Herr Karl Greim. I told him that I believed John George Reissinger to have been Evangelical Lutheran, but it's possible that he could have been Roman Catholic. In a list of Salem Lutheran Church members, his grandson, David Risinger, is listed under the German Reformed heading, while David's son Adam was listed under the Evangelical Lutheran heading - and attended the same church. Therefore, it's possible that John George Reissinger was Roman Catholic and his descendants "reformed" to Evangelical Lutheran.

In December of 2005, I contacted a professional Bavarian researcher, Marianne Sutter. Here is her response to me after I questioned whether or not it was possible that John George Reissinger was from Walderbach, Bayern, Germany.

12-12-2005

Dana, the villages Wald and Walderbach are a Catholic area. I think there is no connection. Both of my clients have got Catholic ancestor, sorry. But it is true a lot of emmigrats around 1750 are from the Baden-Wuertemberg area (more Evangelic/Protestant).
I think you should write to the big Evangelic/Protestant archive in Speyer. Mayby they can help or give you a better address.
Here the address:
Archiv des Bistums Speyer
Kleine Pfaffengasse 16
67346 Speyer

I think they have got a hompage, too: www.bistumsarchiv-speyer.de (not sure look at google)

Hope this will help to break the wall
greetings from Bavaria
Marianne

I did as she asked, looked up the correct website on google, and found absolutely nothing.

Much more research in Germany needs to be done before I can say for sure that John George Reissinger was from Wurrtemberg, Germany - or even a Roman Catholic from Walderbach, Bayern, Germany. I'm more inclined to believe that the Reissingers were from Passau, Bayern, Germany as another researcher, Herr Norbert Ernst, has suggested.

MY SPECULATION ON THE CHILDREN OF JOHN GEORGE RISINGER:
I think the Tomfit listed on the Snow Rowand passenger list (cited above) as the son of John George Risinger is actually Thomas Vitus "Fite" Risinger (translation confirmed above from researchers in Germany noted above). I also believe that Thomas Risinger is a son of Fite Risinger, due to the fact that Fite, age 10 in 1752 would have been old enough to have a child in 1760, which is around the time that I believe Thomas was born. I believe that Jacob Mariah Risinger is a son of Fite (see #10 below) and not John George Risinger (contrary to popular belief), as Jacob Mariah was born 1768, a 20 year difference from his sibling before him (if he were John George's son). I believe that David Risinger is a son of Thomas Risinger. David's headstone says he was born in 1762, but I believe that to be an error. I believe that he was born in 1782 and not 1762. If he was born in 1762, then he was 47 years old when he married Catherine (29 years older than she was) and that is unlikely. If David was born in 1762, then he would have been listed in the 1790 and 1800 census as a head of household, which he is not. David doesn't show up as a head of household until the 1810 census. He was living with his father Thomas before that. Fite had a large family according to his Revolutionary War records."

And that's how far I've gotten with the Risinger German origins!! Like you, I'm wanting to get to the bottom of it, once and for all! ;o)

This is the right family. In fact, I too have a copy of the book and Uncle Ken, before he died helped me get started to continue it. I will be glad to fill you in on all of my father's side of the family. Of the Hartford children, only two are still alive. When I was young I remember listening to all these brothers talk about Uncle Gid. So many stories. How should I get my info to you? I am on Facebook under Marilyn Hartnett.
Re: Newberry Co. and Lexington Co. Land Transactions - Risingers

Hi, I have read many of your posts here and other forums; you have contributed a tremendous amount of information on your family!
I'm interested in your posting referencing Frederick Henry's name in an 1821 land dispute where he testifies re: widow Mary Mulberry, has children George and Barbara Mulberry, marries a ___ Henry, is the father of this Frederick Henry, her husband _______ Henry dies and Mary-Mulberry-Henry marries Fite Risinger.. This Frederick states he is 54 at time of dispute [1821] so I calculated c1767 birthdate.

I believe in another posting it was said Frederick Henry and William Henry were brothers.

I realize these Henry surnames are only a side note to you Risinger research but I'm hoping you may have more that can be of help to me.

George Miller of Lynches is our earliest proved ancestor though we believe he is connected to the Michael Miller granted 200a on Broad River in 1755. I've found nothing on Frederick Henry before 1760.

20 Sept 1760 - Michael Miller, George Miller & Frederick Henry purchase land on Lynches River, Anson Co. NC - now located Chesterfield Co. SC. These three along with an Isaac Weidner, witnessed each others transactions.

One theory - moved east temporarily during indian troubles in western SC.

1772 - Frederick Henry makes three separate Deed of Gifts to William Henry, Peter Henry, and George Miller 'of Lynches'. I only have a copy of the George Miller document; in it Frederick Henry refers to George as 'my loving son in law'- I don't know the exact location: Craven Co., Broad River, names indexed/mention in Deed of Gift - Michael Thumberton & possibly E. Musgrove. At some point I hope to get a copy of Deeds of Gift to William & Peter Henry to see if they are sons, brothers, etc. I realize son in law could refer to daughter's husband or a step son.

1797 - Will of William Henry, Newberry Co. bequest to son George Henry; Wit: Fredick/Frederick Henry.

Though William Henry could be the William in 1797 will, I see no other references to Peter Henry at SCDAH.

So, because of how he was, you never knew much about him, right? My father-in-law was in a similar situation with his Risingers, except that his father never talked about his family for reasons unknown. My father-in-law was 19 when his father died at the age of 72, so maybe it was the age gap. Nonetheless, I was able to tell my father-in-law about his ancestors, as well as show him where the majority of them are buried in Leesville, Lexington Co., SC (Jacob Risinger was the only Risinger to leave SC). I was able to give him a picture of his beloved grandmother. It was the first one of her that he had ever received.

I will certainly help you in any way that I can. If you could send me those clippings, I'd appreciate it! You can send it by message here, or you can send them to my genealogy research e-mail address at risingen@yahoo.com.

I apologize for not contacting you before now.

I don't have any further information on the Henrys other than what the SCDAH has. There was a Frederick Henry, Sr. and a Frederick Henry, Jr. Mary married Frederick Henry, Sr. I have a book entitled "The Dutch Fork: An Atlas of The Dutch Fork of Newberry District, SC" by Carl W. Nichols. This book is an atlas, where Mr. Nichols copied tons of deeds and plats from the SC Archives and compared them to modern day maps. He then combined the two to create the maps in his book.

In the book, there is a Frederick Henry and a Peter Henry. Here's what it says regarding Frederick:

"Henry, Frederick
150A, 22 May 1767, 10:196. Broad River below Second Cr. Map-P.7.
125A (SE part) of survey sold 8 Feb 1772 to son, Peter Henry (Charleston Deeds B-4, 300).
Survey shows as site of Henry's Mill (Mills' Map)."

Note that 150A and 125A are map numbers within the book. This is the only entry that mentions Peter Henry.

The second entry:
"Leytner, Christopher
250A, 4 Oct. 1753, 7:64. Second Cr. Map-P.36
Land transferred to Michael Leitner who d. instestate. Land devolved to son, Christian Leitner, who sol 74A part of survey 7 July 1792 to Conrad Zuber (Nby Deeds D-218). Remainder of survey sold to John Henry Gallman who sold 109A part of survey 29 Jan 1815 to Frederick Henry (Nby Deeds L-51)."

I have located Second Creek. Fite Risinger owned land on Second Creek. His father, John George Reissinger, owned land on nearby Cannon's Creek. I took Mr. Nichols' book with me to Newberry County and located the original land grants.

I did find Michael Miller in the book. The other Millers listed are Anes Miller, Annamaria Miller, Barbara Miller, Jacob Miller, and John Miller.

Here's what the book says about Michael Miller:

"Schover, Michael
250A, 21 March 1769, 11:177. Between Broad River and Hellers Cr. Map-P.40.
150A part of survey sold 4 Feb 1772 to Conrad Suber (Nby Deeds D-212). 100A part of survey previously transferred to Michael Miller (Memorials 12:120)."

And that's the only entry for Michael Miller.

Unfortunately, aside from what I've already posted, this is the only information that I have on Frederick Henry.

I wish I could be of more help! However, if you have any further questions, I'll be happy to assist you.

Sincerely,
Dana Risinger

I have a couple of those in my family line as well! :o)

I know what you mean about census records. I've been researching genealogy for 12 years now and nothing surprises me! That's why I try to find other info such as burial records, birth records, marriage records, etc., to document what the census records either don't provide, or to prove or disprove the info given.
I don't think Lenora is Violet. In the census records, Lenora is the first child listed in 1900, 2 years before Violet was born. Even though I can't find them in 1910, Lela is still listed as the first child in the 1920 census and was married at the time. Violet is the last child listed in that census. If you can find her middle name, that would be awesome.

So, your father was in the military. Do you know anything about his service? I found the following on Ancestry.com:

U.S. World War II Army Enlistment Records, 1938-1946
Name: Jordan D. Fowler
Birth Year: 1919
Race: White, Citizen
Nativity State or Country: Oklahoma
State of Residence: Texas
County or City: Dallas
Enlistment Date: 1-30-1946
Enlistment State: California
Enlistment City: Letterman General Hosp Presidia of S F
Branch: Medical Department - For Enlisted Men of the Medical Department (includes Enlisted Men of the Medical Department on Duty with the Dental Corps)
Branch Code: Medical Department - For Enlisted Men of the Medical Department (includes Enlisted Men of the Medical Department on Duty with the Dental Corps) or Army Nurse Corps
Grade: Corporal
Grade Code: Corporal
Term of Enlistment: One year enlistment
Component: Regular Army (including Officers, Nurses, Warrant Officers, and Enlisted Men)
Source: Enlisted Man, Philippine Scout or recall to AD of an enlisted man who had been transferred to the ERC
Education: 1 year of high school
Civil Occupation: Hatchery men
Marital Status: Married
Height: 64
Weight: 090

If this is indeed him, it states that he was from Oklahoma and lived in Texas. I'm not sure why he registered in California, unless he was already enlisted and was stationed there. It also states that he was a hatchery man in civilian life. I guess he worked in the poultry industry.

Does any of this ring a bell?

hajacon, I was so excited yesterday and I couldn't remember what my account was here, so I created a new one. Just wanted you to know that wvfamilies and Janet Currie or janetcurrie56 are all the same person. I also wanted you to know that since I don't currently have an ancestry subscription, I asked two friends to see if you were registered there and to send you a message with my contact info. I believe that both were successful in finding you and sent you messages through that site. Again, you can reach me at wvfamilies@gmail.com or mountie@charter.net If you look at the 1850 census in New Brighton, Beaver Co PA you will see a family listed under Catherine Risinger who has sons John and Smith and several girls. Catherine's husband, John, died the year before and he and William were brothers. I have not absolutely figured out where they came from or who their father was, but I strongly believe they were born in Washington Co PA in the early 1800's. Hope we can connect. Many Thanks and God Bless, Janet Risinger Currie

Talk about shock! that's what got me started on the family telephone pole hunt. I LOVE it!! This family is massive. Am getting off computer but in the next week or so, I will dig up my stuff and scan it for you and send it. do you want to communicate by private email or use this site? BTW. Violet was married multiple times. still trying to figure them all out. According to her, her mother was full blooded cherokee...?? Not sure about that tale either.

right. plus lots of other horror stories...they weren't the
sweetest people on the planet...mostly I think my dad and violet and all her husbands put the 'fun' in dysfunctional.
but that's not really important. I've just been trying to get the lines connected for future generations of amateur
detectives..lol
glad you could give them some missing information. so many families never find out where they came from.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have some of those bits and pieces and was pretty sure Violet had a brother and a sister. The sister I think is Lela is Lela Risinger Krueger and wound up near Matagorda County in Texas just south of here(I live
in Brazoria County). Leon Hale wrote an article about her in Houston Post 11-5-1970..just found that today. Brother william died in South Texas. I have the newspaper clippings.
My dad was Violet's son..Jordan Dennis Fowler. b about 1919.
in OK? or TX? He died in 1976 of cancer.

My dad never said a word about family, so this has been tough to find.

I hope you find some of them. Because they were in and out of Indian Territory, they fell in the cracks. I have no idea who Fowler was but supposedly my gmother Violet was pregnant out of wedlock. My dad Jordan Dennis had last name of Fowler, but frankly, we aren't sure..? violet had several husbands over the years and wound up in Dallas. (normal risinger pattern-east texas). If you ever want some of the clippings I can scan and send.

no telling what he was into at that point. he was a jack of all trades. He basically got tossed out of the army because he wouldn't behave. he was about 5'8" and weighed about 150 pounds soaking wet. green eyed. very very bad tempered. He was quite the philanderer. Not too many of his offspring turned out very well. I don't keep in touch with them...

oh darling, if you had only known him!! the original traveling man. that's him. he was born in 1919 (we heard but were never really sure). Violet L.(L. Violet?) was born in 1900. I'll look on her driver's license this weekend-have to dig it out of storage. Lela is the sister who married kirby then krueger and wound up south of here. Not sure when she was born. I do know that the census records were iffy at best, so I only use them as a jumping off place. The only reason I know any of this are the newspaper articles my gmother kept & the funeral book.

I have been trying to get in touch with someone from your family for years. I even called the business school to see if they had a historical bio on Thomas; I also asked to speak to the president as I had read that he is a descendent of Thomas. Please, please email me at wvfamilies@gmail.com. I am soooo excited. I would love to exchange information about this family and the one question I have for you is did Thomas ever record who is grandparents were? I believe I know who Elizabeth's parents were but I still don't have confirmation on William's parents. I do have civil war records for 2 of Thomas' brothers and his cousin, Smith Risinger, who is my g grandfather. I just can't tell you how happy I am that you answered this query! I don't think I've been this excited since we made the family connection from that family bible. I suspected that Smith's and Thomas' fathers were brothers, but I had no proof till we found the obit in that bible. Again, I can't wait to talk to you. God Bless, Janet Risinger Currie
