Re: Riach family in Rothes, Scotland
I also understand Alexander Riach died a "pauper". His daughter Elizabeth Riach and John Ferguson had four children born in Rothes that I know of - Jane, John, Elizabeth and Alexander born c.1853. Somewhere around 1871-1880 Alexander moved to Paisley where he married Janet Reid on 11 Aug 1880. Many of this line emigrated to the USA in the 1920's however my Grandfather remained in Scotland. I am related through my mother Elizabeth Ferguson born 27 Jul 1927 in Paisley who emigrated to New Zealand in 1955. I was born in Auckland on 28 May 1960. My Uncle's middle name was Riach, as was a Great Uncle, so it is wonderful to now know where the name has come from. Thanks for the update.

Re: Riach family in Rothes, Scotland
The name Riach appears in several locations in mid-nineteenth century Speyside - see also under Forres. The reason why the name interests me - and, let me say, a worldwide community of salmon anglers, is that in the nineteenth century there developed on Speyside a series of salmon flies variously called Riach ( e.g. silver riach etc). This series is referred to in Knox "Autumns on the Spey" published in 1872, wherein the name Riach is sometimes mis-spelt "Reeach". It seems to me likely that the name was given to the fly because it was invented by an angler, who is likely to have to have been a person of some means in the locality, or a gillie who tied flies for the wealthy. Any candidates considered likely, please? The name Riach seems, by the way, likely to be derived from the Scots Gaelic word for "royal". The whole area of Speyside and indeed Deeside was Gaelic-speaking until the Reformation, aas can be seen from the names of the individual hills which make up the Cairngorms.

Re: Riach family in Rothes, Scotland
that seems to tie up nicely with my research to date, I did not follow your Alexander line as it was not my direct line. Have you established what children Alexanders father had and if so do you agree with Alexanders sister Ann .if so then we are related through the Riach line. The Australian branch is related through Alexanders brother Charles Who married Ann Findley Regards Jim
