Surnames: Riach, Glennie, Coutts, Kellas
I am descended from John Riach and Janet Glennie of Towie via their daughter Barbara, born circa 1799. She married James Coutts and they had a daughter Jane born circa 1833. Jane married Harry Kellas - their son James was my grandfather who migrated to Australia in 1911. Would love to hear from anyone with shared ancestors.

Hi there! I'm also a John and Janet descendant....I'm a 2xgreats grand-daughter of their son William, born c 1798, due to prolific genes and a lack of morals, I'm afraid! Thelast of the line, as far as I'm aware, with regards to my grandfather, William, born 1869 to John Riach and Isabella Riddell, in Strathdon, both of whom went on to have twelve children by other people, I believe! Do feel free to get in touch if you'd like more info.
Cheers,
Diana

Dear Diana

Thanks for responding to my message. Great to hear from you. First of all, how do you pronounce Riach? I have been saying “Ree-ark”, is that right?

You didn’t mention being able to get back past John Riach and Janet Glennie, so I assume that is as far as you went too. I did find a Barbara Reid and William Glennie having a child Janet, perhaps this is our Janet. I am basing that on our Barbara, being the first girl, probably being named after her maternal grandmother, and then your William perhaps being named after his maternal grandfather.

I am descended from Barbara Riach via her daughter Jane (christened Jean) Coutts, one of 5 children of Barbara and her husband James Coutts. Jane married at 41, to Harry Kellas, and had just one child, my grandfather James. I think Jane may have been a teacher, her address when she married was Tillyduke Schoolhouse, Strathdon. Her brother William Coutts was a doctor and was plying his profession around Strathdon at about the same time – I have found several death records where he is the certifying MD, and his own death.

James Kellas was born in Strathdon but left Aberdeenshire and married in Newbattle, Midlothian in 1903. He and his wife Mary Brown Wood had 4 surviving children (1 had died in infancy) when they migrated to Australia in 1911. Jane Coutts Kellas had died in 1909 at Cambuslang, at the home of James and Mary – my mother was born at the same address in 1910. James and Mary had 3 more surviving children after they arrived in Australia. My mother Beatrice is now 92.

Would be interested to hear a bit more about William’s descendants.

Regards
Jeanette

Hi Jeanette! The pronunciation is a bit like clearing your throat..Ree ach, as in loch, which noone other than a Scot can seem to manage.....Anyway, William married Margaret Stewart of Huntly, and they had 6 children.John, James, Janet, Barbara, Jean, Margaret, between 1840 and 1854.William died 4 Dec, 1878. John, (20.11.1840, with whom I share a birthdate) had a fling with Isabella Riddell and produced my grandfather, William, born 25 Jan, 1869.John then went on to marry one Jane Strachan, and produce another 11 children, including his first-born....another William, just to confuse matters. Grandfather William married Jessie Ross and had three children, Elsie, Mary and William, my father. He was born in 1906 and died in 1996, as far as I can tell the first member of our family to reach 90. He was a late starter, though. Didn't get married until he was 46. There were just my sister and myself, and neither of us have children, so we're the last of that particular line. I don't know if you've ever seen a book entitled 'The Land o'Lonach', but there is a photo of Isabella Riddell and a few of her family, but also one Francis Riach, of Lynemore, Glencarvie, who has to be one of ours as he has the nose, but so far no luck in finding the connection. I also have the nose, unfortunately, altho' I prefer to think of mine as a more petite, feminine version......
Hope all this will be of some use to you.
Best wishes
Diana

Hi again! Jessie Ross was my grandmother. She was born 25 March 1881, the 7th and last child of Daniel Ross and Janet, MS Tough. The family live mainly in the Rhynie and Essie area. If this sounds familiar, I can give you names and dates and another two generations back. I haven't done any work on Jane Strachan, as she doesn't belong to me in the strictest sense.....I may look into her in the future, however. A really good site is Scotland's People, where for a small fee you can search the index. The death certificates in Scotland from 1855 onward are fantastic, as they give the names of the parents, including mother's maiden name, so that should give you a start on Jane.
You probably already know all this, so just ignore it if it's old hat.
