Have been chasing details of the Rattigan family for ages with only poor results- can anyone give me any clues to my gg grandfather's background? James Rattigan was in 1851 census said to be born in Liverpool c1816, became a journeyman tailor, married a girl from Scotland called Jane and by 1851 census they were lodgers in Leeds, with their month old daughter Margaret, my ggm. A second daughter, Isabella, was born in Sunderland Durham,8 September 1855 and christened St Cuthbert's,South Shields, 21 October 1855.None of the family appear in 1861 census. James Rattigan died in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire on 23 Dec 1861. Jane also died Cheltenham 22 Aug 1897,and on her death certificate James was said to have been a "Drill Instructor". Can find no other details of Jane's ancestry in Scotland, though the baptismal record for Isabella gives her mother's name as "Jane Hannah".
