I believe I do. I have to look it up and get back to you. I recall when I was actively involved that I seemed to reach a dead end with regard to my grandfather, Simon Raywak (spelled on the census, but my grandmother I believe pronounced it Revak). Does that sound right?

He was estranged from the family so we knew nothing about him.

I'll get back to you.

You're welcome bjszum

No idea why some of our ancestors put down Austria instead of Hungary on their US documents. I'm sure they had a reason but it does not matter, what matters is their precise place of birth. Do you know it?
This is the Austria-Hungary they were from
http://users.erols.com/mwhite28/austhung.htm where 12 different languages were spoken. Since you mentioned Slovakian than lets get you started in
www.iabsi.com/gen/public
Russian most likely is Rusyn/Rusin/Russniak - Byzantine Catholic.

Zlatica

Hello JoAnn, by a coincidence I found your message on ancestry. It might happen, that yours and mine grandfathers were brothers. They were born in a little village in north-west Czechoslovakia, called Dolna Marikova. My mother was born Revakova, married Roncikova.Your grandfather had emigrated to USA when he was 17-18 years old. Let me know if this might be a relative of yours and mine. In that case, your grandfather was my mother's uncle.

The info in the obit is correct. Revo's mother was married 1st to Mr. Revak and when she was widowed with 5 children married Mr. Berezovske. I met them when they were old. Mrs. Berezovske is my great aunt. My father, Joseph Matsko was her nephew. I met Tatiana(Tillie)when she was retired, living in a apt in Mount Carmel. Her sister, Mary Revak Shields introduced us. She was very intelligent although was not educated past about the 4th grade. I knew most of the Revaks that lived in the area. I am now 63, so they were in their 40's, 50's and 60's. How are you related to the Revaks?

I have very little information about my (Great-Grandmother) Mary Moltion, but believe that her last name (maiden) was Revak. She spoke about Galicia, Franz Josef, her mother (?) Julia Dementro (sp?)and there were other names mentioned...Anna Susko, Michael, Antonio and Helen. Not sure how those names fit in, however. I understand that she was born about 1886 and I know she died in July of 1977. She came over to the US in 1900-1902, I believe in NY. She was there for a couple years before she eventually came to Syracuse, NY to stay. She had 2 sons, William (my Grandfather), John and one daughter, Anna.

The little bit of information I have was written down by my Mom over the years...mostly because G.G. didn't want to talk about it or because she forgot. Unable to write in english...she wasn't able to write it either. (She used to take phone messages in Polish...much to the discern of my Uncles..lol).

If anyone can help me...please send info...I am at a dead end.
THANK YOU!
Tami

PA Revak Connections

In trying to find info on Horoschak, I found an obituary on REVAK from Mt Carmel, PA News-Item paper. It is a bit confusing as the gentleman is Walter Anthony "Revo" Berezovske who died July, 2010. More confusing is it states parents as Anthony and Anna (Matsko) Berezovske. States gentleman married Miriam T.E. Sadusky. To make more confusing it then says...."He was the last surviving member of his immediate family and in addition to parents, was preceded in death by sisters Tatiana (Revak) Horoschak, Mary (Revak) Shields and Pearl (Berezovske) Winnick, and brothers John Revak and Paul Revak." Many other last names connected to children & grandchildren. If anyone can connect with this, and can advise me of the sister Tatiana (Revak) Horoschak, I would appreciate it. It is Tatiana Horoschak of same area (Mt Carmel/Centralia) that I am trying to find family history on. A Tatiana Horoschak that would have married a Stephanus Kashycke/Kashitsky and lived in Centralia.

DAS6851

Tillie's (Tekla)SS-5Form would have her place of birth and parents names. If she was naturalized citizen than there too would be a place of birth and even a mention of a husband and children.
Being that her name was Tekla, I think she was from historical region Galicia from (most) likely within 10 miles radius of the male ancestor's village. Samuel or Simon could have come thru as REWAK. You might want to check a port of Baltimore, Boston, Philadelphia and NY EI for a manifest. You might also want to look for their state marriage application and church marriage record.
You might want to look at old maps
http://igrek.amzp.pl/mapindex.php?cat=WIG100
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/digkonyv/topo/3felmeres.htm
www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm

Yes, Tillie (also Tecla) was his wife, my grandmother.

This is so strange to me. It's been years since I've looked at my research. My grandfather was Simon, but now that I think of it, I believe someone told me he was also Samuel, one being a nickname.

If anyone can tell me anything about this man that would be fabulous. I believe he had other children that my mother and her two sisters never knew about. I can't recall what it was I found that led me in that direction. I don't know why I didn't continue because I have no relatives other than one cousin. To find other famiy members through him would be a gift. Thank you so much.

Thank you for the reply to my post.

My grandfather's name was written and pronounced Raywak, but that was Americanized. I only knew that he was from Austria/Hungary and that the real pronunciation was "Revak". My grandmother, his wife, always referred to herself as a Rusyn (pronounced Rushin's - I never knew if she meant Russian???) But she was a Poliniak.

I never knew this man as she left him shortly after their marriage. Initially she went to a Ukranian church, but when she left her husband she was not allowed to return and she started to go to the Russian Orthodox church. I don't think this helps at all.

Hi Diane,
My Father, Ronald C. Revak, was the oldest of three sons of Clayton & Alma Revak. Gary, your dad, was the middle brother and Bruce Revak was the youngest. Bruce & Kathy Revak live in North Mpls.. I'm Brian's cousin. Gary died a couple of years ago and my brothers and sisters attended the funeral. Connie & her sister (her name escapes me right now its early)
Brian's sister's were there but not Brian. My mom & dad (Ron & Barbara C. Revak) had six kids, Gregory, Guy, Kellie (Larson), Lee, Kim, and Lori (Miller). All of us but Lee & Guy live in the Twin Cities. Lee lives in FL and Guy in Duluth.
Bruce would probably remember the most but I know quite a bit about the family. Alma lived with us for most of my childhood. Give me a call i'm in the book, I live in Saint Paul.

Hopefully you still check into this site periodically. I have read about your tours (i think you now lead them to the Lemko region) and thanks to you, have hired Jim Stamm to do some research for me. While doing a recent search, i came across your name again, leading me to this site. I'm trying very hard to trace the people in my father's family--less on the geneological side, and more on the who they were nad what they did (story) side. His family was from Labova--Wojtowych and his mother's family was Krynicka/Krynicki from Krinica. I'm now trying to find out more about his mother's family and sisters, and especially a lumber mill that my grandmother's sister nda her husband lost due to mismanagement. Can you give me any advice as to how i can go about tracking down town happenings and personalities prior to WWII?

THAnk you for any help you can provide!

tanya wojtowych

Hello,

This is a true "find"! I know that many of these messages go back three or more years. I'm just now (12/13/2008) discovering this site.

My maternal grandfather, John Revak, and his wife, Anna Rohac, lived in Jonestown (Minersville) PA. They both originated in Austria, not far from Vienna. Before emigrating from Austria in the early 1900s, they had established a church in their home village (called, I believe, the Holy Ghost Church, or something equivalent).

They had three sons and six daughters, one of whom is my mom, Elizabeth, now 94 and presently in "God's waiting room".

If any of this rings any kind of bell, I'd love to know about it. Bless you all,

Michael Rendish

Hi,
I think I may have communicated with you years ago as I started my research. I droppe dout of it for a few years, and now I back at it. I recently found that a John Revak was married to my Great -Grandmother, Eva Prokopczak for a time before he was killed in a mine. I believe he had a son name Stephen who was rasied by my Grand-Parents Mike and Magdeline Paduhovich. Does any of your reserch show a possible connection to mine? Do you know anything of the Paduhovich string, from Roztka, Nowy Scaz district? Thanks

Very interesting. What was the attraction of Revaks to PA.? My mom's family is in Philadelphia. Although we don't know much about them. There is lots of different opinions as to the origins. I understand that Revak is Slovakian but my uncles are adamant that they were Hungarian simply because of a record showing a great uncle being in the Austro-Hungarian army. I believe that doesn't mean anything since EVERYONE from Hungary, Czech, Slovakia, Austria were part of that empire.

In any case I have tried to track down Steven Revak, the son of John revak ( arrived circa 1895). There are Steven Revaks all over the place. Its baffling. We don't know what ever happened to Steven Revak (my grandfather) since my Mom was separated from her parents early in life.

My mom's mother was Catherine Revak (maiden name Hoffman)
Stephen Revak owned a Tavern. They were both born around 1900, I believe.

I know they(my mom's seven brothers and a couple sisters) all lived and many still live in Philadelphia. That's about it.

I would appreciate any info you might have on this family.

Well thanks and take care,
Dave
HI My name is Jane Haranin and I am trying to research my grand father inlaws family tree. His name is Henry Haranin, his fathers name was Joseph Haranin and his mothers name was Antonia Revak. I believe that Joseph came from Lithuania and Antonia was from Poland. I would like to find out if the name Haranin has had the spelling changed.
