I am also doing research on the WRENN families. Mine are from North Carolina. This Wrenn family were living in Randolph County during the early years.

My Grandfather's parents were Thomas Jefferson Wrenn and Mary F. Ryder. They were Living in Randolph County NC. My grandfather, Thomas Arthur Wrenn moved his family to Guilford County and that is where they lived until their Deaths in 1948 and 1964. I have the names and birth dates of Grandpa's siblings and the same information about his and Dora's children and grandchildren.

I will be glad to share the information I have with you if we are the same family of Wrenns.

Dee

Here's what I think I know. Supposedly the Renn brothers came to this continent during the French-Huguenot War. They settled in Canada and came to the USA, Indiana to be specific. Three of the brothers came to Missouri and settled in Jefferson City. They started a huge dairy farm in an area now known as Renn Addition. There is a window in a local church with the name Renn on it. The name supposedly was originally spelled RENNE. This makes me lean toward the French origin. There are lots of Renns around here, all decendents of the original 3 brothers. That is what I think I know.

He entered the grocery and produce business in 1853 until he went into the bottling business. After he sold the bottling business to his son he operated a saloon. ....

I too am researching the Renn/Wrenn family in NC. I am nearly certain James H. Renn is my grandfather several times removed. As you may already know, he died in a prison camp in MD near the end of the Civil War. Please let me know if you have any information on James' or Jackey's parents. I will let you know if I come across anything on Eliza. By the way, I'm originally from Franklin County and have recently bought my retirement house near Henderson. Currently, I live near DC where I am stationed in the Air Force.
Chris Wrenn

Re: Philip Renn

I have seen a Fleming woman in the 1850 TX census that had at least two children living with her and her husband who are listed with the Wrenn surname.

The male is Thomas Jefferson WRENN and a female child Mary WRENN. I do not remember if there was another male child or not.

The children have the same given and surnames of my line of WRENN.

The problem is that I cannot find that census record again. Just as I started to copy the census my computer list its Internet connection. I put the name Thomas Jefferson WRENN in the search block for TX and it came up with him about the age of 19. He was born in 1832 so I am guessing that he is my G-Grandfather.

If you are lucky enough to find that census. please send me a copy of it to kalicokitt@yahoo.com It is possible that we are looking for the same lady.

I am trying to find a male WRENN that will agree to taking a DNA test for the family.

There is one, but he is a "wild child" and no one knows where he is. He has fallen into the wrong crowd and is doing drugs plus other things.

I have two grandsons. They are my daughter's children. Could that work? They are 9 and 10 years old. I am a direct descendants from the WRENN family. Would they be any help for the DNA testing?

Dee, I'm afraid not, not for the Y-chromosome test.

You can take a DNA test that will confirm paternity (inexpensive), or confirm if you are a sibling or a cousin (about $700, when I last checked), but none of those tests will help determine a genealogical surname line.

Do you know of any males carrying the W(R)en(n) surname and descended from your grandfather or great-grandfather? If not, do you think you could track one down?

Are the guys in your family unwilling to take the test out of privacy fears? The results are confidential and can only be used for genealogical purposes.

You can't uncover health issues with this kind of test, either -- it's impossible to do so -- so they needn't worry about their insurance companies dropping them or raising their rates.

Ay, how frustrating these situations can be!

The test involves rubbing a specially treated cotton swab inside your mouth, and then you send it off in the mail.

In fact, the only painful part of the test is the cost, normally $200, but DNA Ancestry is offering a half-price test through September 30, 2008. With tax, this test comes to about $118. (I paid full price for our test, and I think it was worth every penny. You guys are getting a great deal for half the price!)

We've had three DNA matches so far, all linking to Nicholas Wren and Margaret Bell of Virginia, but really, we've got so many more Renn lines out there, wouldn't it be great to have a DNA sample from every single one?

These DNA tests will only test a tiny part of your DNA: the Y-chromosome, which is passed down from father to son. If you are a female Renn you cannot take the test. However, you can ask your brother, father, uncle, or other male Renn relative to take the test for you.

More details on this offer are here:
http://wrenkin.com/2008/07/25/y-chromosome-dna-test-50-off/

No, I'm so sorry, Dee. I wish I could say yes.

You are a Wrenn. If you married a Smith, your boy children will carry the Smith Y-chromosome. If your daughter married a Jones, her boy children will carry the Jones Y-chromosome.

This is how I came to understand it: when a child is conceived, the mother can only contribute an X-chromosome. The father, however, can contribute either an X-chromosome or a Y-chromosome. In so doing he determines the sex of the baby.

If Dad contributes an X-chromosome, the child becomes a girl. If Dad contributes a Y-chromosome, the child becomes a boy. Two Xs make a girl, but one X plus one Y make a boy.

So every male on this planet carries a Y-chromosome passed down from father to son for generations. There might be a mutation here or there as the years go by, but the y-chromosome can be recognized and compared with other descendants, making it very handy for genealogical research on surnames, which are also passed from father to son.

Your best bet is to find a related male carrying the Wrenn surname and talk him into taking a test.

Bonnie

P.S. I am so sorry about the wild child --- I don't know who suffers the most in such situations: the child living the dangerous life or the loved ones who worry about him.

Johann Renn in Hombressen, Germany

I'm looking for a fellow researcher, or perhaps a cousin from this section of Germany who would be interested in helping me pick up the threads leading from the US back to Germany.

Johann Renn and his wife Christina left the Hombressen area about 1849 with 3 sons and 2 daughters: Augustus, Fredrich, Christopher, Maria Louise and Anna Christine. Johann was born 18 Jan 1802 and Christine was born 2 Sep 1803. They were a founding family for a Lutheran Church in Maryand, so I would assume that they were part of the Lutheran Church in Germany.

I would love to find out the parents of my 3rd Gr-Grandparents, and perhaps meet a few cousins along the way. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Beth Ann
Do you have any information about Thomas Jefferson Wrenn b 24 Dec 1832 d 11 Nov 1905. He married Mary F. Ryder in 1859. She was the daughter of H.H. and Mary Ryder.

They lived in Randolph county, NC in a town named Erect. I believe that Thomas Jefferson's father was William Wrenn.

I have the Wrenn Family Bible that starts with Thomas Jefferson Wrenn. I will be glad to share what I have with you. This Bible gives the names of their children as well as the spouse of each one.

If the William Henry Wrenn you are speaking of is the son of Thomas Jefferson Wrenn, then I can give you information about him. He has one daughter still living.

G-Grandma Wrenn spelled the Wrenn surname as Wren in the Bible as well.

Please let me know if you have any information. All of the names above are on the children's birth certificates so I am not sure which one is right. I have been given some possible info on her but have not been able to verify it and am hoping someone could.

I have her marriage date to John Faulkner as 14 Feb 1877.
I have her parents as James Henderson Renn from Warren Co. and her mother as Jackey Faulkner and they were married 19 Oct 1854 in Granville Co.

I have a US Census from 1900 for John Faulkner and all of the children are listed but Eliza is not.
Re: The REnns

I recently acquired the notebook of my cousin, Lester Ressler, Who has been doing research on the Renn family for many years. His notebook is 360 handwritten pages long, and each page has perhaps 30 names. That is a lot of Renns ! I have been entering these names in my computer which woulld make finding people easy but I am only up to the late 1890s/early 1900s and that is about half way through
his notebook. Doing a manual search, I found an entry for a Harold Wilson Renn (1905 - 1985) married to a Christine
Ammerman, and an entry for a Verna Renn, sister of William
H. Renn (1905-1984) and father of Chester Renn of Elysburg who was a classmate of mine at Shamokin High and who recently passed away. I found several entries for Betty Renn
including Betty Jane Renn(1921-1935), Betty Rae Renn
married to Roy Cook, and Betty (no middle initial) Renn married to a man named Rommelmann. Hope this is of some value to you. I can do more research for you if you are still interested.
