Hi! My great grandmother's maiden name was Reiss. I am very close to the city of St. Louis, MO. I have been researching Reiss in this city and I came across the following information:

John: 1870 census Page 615 9th Ward

J. Reiss age 26 was a seaman who worked on the SS City of Para in 1888.

Jah (could this be John?) Reiss age 43 was on the Steamer NY 5/13/1867 (see the ISTG records)

I have seen Reiss spelled Reis, Reise, Reiss, and Reisse.

My Reiss family has both spellings in the cemetery where they are buried. The portal stone says Woerner - Reis (1 s)
All the tombstones say Reiss.

My family was:
Ambros 1836-1892
Maria 1834-1905
Frank 1866-1889
Elizabeth who married Martin Woerner 8/28/1860-8/2/1940

All four died in St. Louis, MO. I believe at least 3 of them if not all 4 were born in Germany in the Baden-Baden area because we think Elizabeth was already married to Martin and that both families came to America together. We have not found the documentation to prove this yet however.

Hope this helps in some way!
