Elizabeth Reich Steinberg:born in Germany 1/1/1830; died Ford Co., IL 7/4/1912

Johann George Steinberg married Elizabeth Reich. They had children Konrad, George and Justis Steinberg. Daughters, Martha Elisabeth and Katharina Elise Steinberg died in Germany before 1875.
Does anyone have any info on this family? Elizabeth's death cert. from Ford County, Illinois states she came to the US (from Germany) in 1875. I am assuming the whole family came. She only lived in Illinois from May 1 - July 4, 1912 when she died. I don't know where she lived before coming to Illinois. She was a widow at the time of her death. Elizabeth's parents were Johannes and Elisabeth Hühner Reich and Johann George's parents were Konrad and Anna Shüler Steinberg.

I read your beautiful note about your grandfather on Ancestry.com, and had to respond. I hope that by now you have had some success in locating family. My "Reich" family was born in Austria, not Germany (tho it was part of the German Empire back then). My great-grandfather, Louis Reich, came to the US around 1888. I know very little about his family, except that his father's name was Benjamin Reich; I do not even know if he or his father had siblings.

I do know that Louis had 7 children, one of whom, Gus, became an electrician in Queens, NY. Louis himself was a bookkeeper. They were a very bright family.

CONCRETE FALLS, KILLS TWO AND INJURES TWO

Special to the Inquirer - WILKES-BARRE, Pa., Nov. 7 - Two men were instantly killed and two others injured today when a piece of concrete broke loose in the Auchisloss shaft of the D., L. & W. Company at Nanticoke today and crashed upon a carriage containing four men. The dead are Charles Reich, aged 43 years, and John Englehart, aged 37. Those who escaped with slight injuries are Fritz Felker and John Hughes.

The four were inspecting the shaft and making repairs. They were midway in the shaft when the concrete, weighing several tons, broke loose and crashed down upon the carriage.

Funeral of Carl Reich

The funeral of the late Carl Riech took place yesterday afternoon from his late home on West Ridge street. The services were held at St. John's Lutheran Church and were coducted by Rev August Fischer. That the deceased was held in high esteem was shown by the large funeral and many beautiful floral arrangements. The casket was born by Gustave Houke, John Englehart, John Kemmick, John Keller, John Kemmick, and Charles Englehart. The floral tributes were carried by Elsie Reich, Gussie Reich, William Koefke, Charles Koefke, Emil Koefke, Albert Koefke, and Charles Wertha. Internment was made in Nanticoke Cemetery.

Additional Information:

The John Englehart mentioned in the above obituary was later killed in a mining accident with Charles "Carl" Reich.

The surname used in the above obituary for William, Charles, Emil, and Albert Koefke might of been misspelled, for the correct spelling in German is Koepke. Also, the maiden name of the wife of Carl Reich is Eva Koepke.

Carl Henry Reich was my father but who died in Feb.7, 1973. I believe he may of had an elder relative with exact name. My dad died at age 45yrs and born in 1927 November, Nanticoke, Pa.

Hi, I was talking to my father, I am curios about my family history. My last name is Reek, I was told that when my great grand father immigrated to to the U.S. the last name got changed from possibly Reich to Reek. I am very curios, and want to see where this ends up. My Great granpa's naqme is Gus, (might be Reek or Reich). When he came over from either Germany or Prussia, he had a nervous breakdown, and any information was kept inside. hi, i have a great grandmother that i am hopelessly trying to research, he last name changes in all of her documents, her marriage license says rajch, 1910 census says reich, and sometimes she spelled it rich like in the 1930 census or even rych on some documents. maybe i am the same reich/rajch as you?

Lucy...I did this research for a friend years ago, and no longer have the information. I do remember finding a Heinrich Reich married to Margaretha Schuck living in Fredrick Co. MD...Found church records in Salt Lake City to confirm this. I know there was alot more info...just can't recall without the documents in front of me. I'm so sorry

I am a descendant of John Reich, b.1765 (don't know birthplace) d. 1835 in Frederick MD. I have seen him listed as a descendant of this Heinrich and would like some more solid documentation. Do you have anything that might confirm this?

I understand there exists a family Bible for Heinrich and copies have been made.

I currently live near Frederick and am researching my family.

I saw on one of these boards where someone had the location of the Reich Bible. I wrote to them then lost where I saw the reference. If you remember anything, I would love to know. That should show if John is a brother of Henry Jr. and Philip etc.

My mother may have something but she is not in good health. She will dig it all up when she is feeling better.

We actually live in MD now and are exploring all things. If I should happen across those records as pertains to Heinrich's military service will let you know. My husband is in the military and he loves that sort of thing. This area is certainly rich with Revolutionary and Civil War history.

I my gg grandfather was William Reich b. 1815 m. Lucinda Rachel Brown Reich in Frederick Maryland. He had William (1853), Lucy Brown (1855), Philip (1857), Elinore (1859), and Benjamin Franklin Reich (1861-1943.) Lucinda Brown Reich Smith is my great grandmother.

My grandfather's name was Abraham Reich. He married a woman named Sarah, and they had two children - my mother and her sister, both in their early 70's now.

My grandfather was the only member of his family to have knowingly survived WWII - prior to the war he had 7 brothers and sisters, parents, and a close family. He had been given an opportunity to move to, what was then called Palestine. He was an accomplished electrician, and began his business in the Tel-Aviv area. Despite his many attempts to find some family members, he was not successful. He found some cousins in South America, made the journey, only to be turned away at the airport due to some supposed problem with his visa. He passed away without aver finding any family, though he did not give up on the possibility of their survival.

He lived in Germany, moved to Palestine/Israel, Johannesburg, South Africa, and then he went back to Israel. He became a renowned Cantor, making several records, and leading congregations in some very famous synagogues.

If anyone is able to help me with any information, I would be grateful. It would be a tremendous gift to our family to find family related to him.

He was a great man - full of compassion, intelligence, love and respect. He passed away many years ago, (30 years), long before his time.

I look forward to any assistance I may glean from any of you - as I am new to this. All replies will be welcome with appreciation and respect.

Thought I would email you. I live in Lodi. I could get an obituary for you from the public library if you like. My grandmother's last name was Reich and she was from Kassel, too,born on Jan 12, 1855. I do not have much information on her siblings. She married a widower Pietz and migrated to South Dakota in 1899. My mother used to know her neighbor whose name was Frey. Also on my mother's family baptismal confirmation it mentioned Christine Frey as one of godparents (in 1877).

We might have soemthing in common.

My great-great-grandmother was Hannah Reich. She married August Maron and had a daughter (my great-grandmother) Anna E. Maron (b. 1867, Grafton, WI) who married Herman August Gall in 1888 in Racine, WI. I have no information prior to Anna other than names. Is this part of the Reich branch you have? If so I would love the information.
