Hello, Carole,
My name is Alfred Rehfeldt, and my home is in Ludwigshafen on Rhine (E-Mail address:
arehfeldt@t-online.de).
I happened to come across your inquiry about Schkona, Germany, and have pleasure in answering it. In fact, the place name should be 'Schköna' (in case the o with the two umlaut dots does not reach you correctly, another way of spelling it is 'Schkoena'). I take it that the o was deprived of its dots by some immigration authority in your country. I know German spelling is usually adapted by foreigners. So I am surprised your surname has remained intact!
Schkoena is situated between Leipzig and Berlin, at a point nearer to Leipzig than to Berlin. More accurately: it can be found roughly about half way between Leipzig and Wittenberg (the town where Luther lived for some time). I don't think you can find it any atlas at your disposal, since it is a small place, either a village or a small town. I found it only in a road atlas of Germany. If you let me know your address, I will be pleased to send you two partial prints of the map.
My father was born in eastern Brandenburg, in a small town near 'Landsberg an der Warthe'. That eastern part now belongs to Poland. He used to do some ancestry research, but the results he got were lost in the war.
It seems that most Rehfeldts originally hail from eastern parts of Germany.
Kind regards
Alfred
