All I can tell you is some of Constantino's descendants but that won't help track further back.

Let's stay in touch here, if either of us learns more...we can share it & hopefully learn more together.

Thanks again!

Stacey :)

My grandfather's name was Jose Anelle Rego. He was born in Galicia, Spain in the Lugo area as well. At some point in time, he traveled to Cuba and then to Tampa in 1909. He also worked in the cigar factories and he had a brother named Jesus who also lived in Tampa. I was very young when he died, so I don't know much about his family. I have asked all of my cousins who are older than me if they remember our grandfather's life in Spain, or Cuba and they all said that he never talked about it. It sounds like your ancestry history is very close to mine. Please contact me if you are still able to retrieve this information.

Shirley

Looking for immigration information of my grandmother Hortencia (Hortence) Rego. She immigrated to the US from San Miguel, Azores when she married a man named Francisco Silva Canario. She lived in Oakland, California. I can't find any info on the ship or port. She was 17 when she and her husband and her younger sister Lucinda Rego came to the USA. The year may have been around 1912 plus or minus.

Re: Rego from France

Wow, this is about 12 years late, but I married a great-great grandson of Benedict Rego from Westford Twp, Richland County, Wisconsin. Benedict married Elizabeth O'Regan (1829-1889) in Ireland. There first child, Anthony, was born in New Jersey in 1857, but their other three were born in Wisconsin. My husband and I are in Mauston right now, and tomorrow we are going to the Richland County History Room in Cazenovia to see what we can dig up about the family.

Benedict's grave stone in St. Bridgets cemetery says "Benjamin Rego - France - 1827-1896." But other family records call him Benedict. The family story is that he came to America with 2 other brothers, but we don't know who they are. And he and his family supposedly lived in a cave near Cazenovia, maybe just for a winter, when they were starting out. They carved their names in the cave, and relatives have seen it, but when we visited last year, we couldn't get to the entrance.

I hope you write soon! I will share everything I discover.

My GGrandfather's family came from the Azores Islands/Portugal in the late 1800's when he was about 15 years old. His name was Manuel Soares de Chaves, and came with I think 7-8 siblings and his family through Boston, and ended up in Northern California. Manuel americanized his name from Soares de Chaves to Keyes, and married Rosa Helena Bairos, whose family was also from the Azores.

Hi Philip
I know its a long time, but just wanted to let you know that there's an online family tree at Geni.com that has a big mangalorean family tree. You can join. As soon as any similarities to existing profiles are found you'll be able to review and if your convinced they are the same you can go for a merge. Now you'll join a big tree or a forest as its's called.

Rego Martinez from La Coruna, Spain

I am hoping that someone will have information on my grandfather's family. His name was Eustaquio Rego Martinez and was born on 9 Sep 1883 in Ladrido, Spain. At the age of 14 he came to North America with his uncles Manuel Rego Martinez and Jose Maria Rego Martinez. While here in the U.S. they all seemed to have dropped the Martinez. I believe he had a sister that left Spain for either Brazil or Uruguay. Supposedly his family had an olive tree and organge tree family in La Coruna. It is thought that some of his family members may have become priests or nuns. I would love any information since most of the elder Regos in my family have past away or are ill.

My family also were plantation farmers. They grew olives and oranges I believe. My father told me some of the family history when I was younger but he past away in 1997. My grandfather came here with a couple of uncles, Manuel and Jose in 1910 and there may have been another uncle by the name of Daniel (my father was named after him). One of the uncles, possibly Manuel, gambled on ships. I have noticed a Manuel who traveled between Spain, New York and Cuba on ancestry. Possibly you have some information on him. My uncle who is still living said that one of his uncles (he can't remember which) settled in Northern California. Some of the Regos in our family settled in Uruguay. My cousin has said that her mother said there were many priests and nuns in the family so it might be a short tree. Hope this helps and thank you for replying.

Hi. I thought I'd try to see if you might have any more information on the Rego family. I have been able to piece together a little more information on my grandfather, Eustaquio. His father was Vicente Rego born about 1870 and his mother was, Carlota Martinez. Vicente and Carlota also had a daughter, Maria Martinez Rego. She was born on 12 Dec 1893 in Espasante, La Coruna, Galicia, Spain and died on 4 Jul 1968 in Ortiouena, La Coruno, Galicia, Spain. I'm not to sure this will be helpful to you, but thought I'd try anyway. Good Luck.

My grandfather went to Chihuahua Mexico, met my grandmother, Refugio Moreno and then came back into the U.S. to in Clifton Arizona. Eventually settling in the Los Angeles area in about 1919 . Rego was his father's name and his mother's was Martinez. I have found a Jose Rego Martinez possibly a photographer, who I believe was his uncle and a Manuel Rego Martinez another uncle who was a gambler that traveled quite a bit. He had a sister who I believe was sent to Brazil but one of my cousins says she went to Uruguay.
Some in the family believed my grandfather, Eustaquio Rego, was Basque but his daughter believed he was Castillan. Does any of this sound familiar?

Hi, I am also looking for ancestors with the name Rego. My family was originally from Portugal. The surname I am interested in is Valenca but my grandfather's name was Joao Vitor do Rego Valenca. He was born in Recife on April 12, l980. He was married to Guiomar do Rego Valenca. This may be a shot in the dark or we may have no connection but I am giving it try. I do have a site for the Valenca family.

The only information I have is that they were from Viana do Castelo or the Minho Region. Of course the surname I am researching is Valenca. My grandfather's name was Joao do Rego Valenca. I know much more about Valenca than I do Rego but also would like to find people with the name. I have a family website and if you would like to visit I will be happy to send you an invitation.

Hi Melody,
I just found this website and would like to share my info on my rego ancestors. My grandfather was born in San Miguel in 1896. His name was Antone Rego. He sometimes went by either Rego Fernandes or Fernandes Rego. A little strange. All my uncles have the last name of Fernandes and my mother and aunt had the last name of Rego. My grandmother was born in 1899 in Sao Sabastao (sp?)or Feiteras (sp?). Her name was Maria Gloria (Cabral) Rego. I lose them until about 1914 when I have a wedding picture and the census of them living in Fall River, MA.

Elena, My grandfather Jose Rego de Rodriguez came from Galica to the US. He had sisters that migrated to Argentina as well. I have some photos of his family in Spain, they are old and my grandfather passed in 1969 so I don't have a reference. If you go to the spanish white pages in Galicia you will see lots of Regos there. I will search for the link and see if I can post it. Also you might consider joining the Spain list and now the rego list. There are not too many members but maybe we can get something going.
Melody Rego de Jimenez Lemons

Re: Orign of the Surname Rego

George, this is what I have from Coat of Arms that I have on the Rego Surname.

This Portugese surname of REGO was a topographic name for someone who lived by a ditch or channel used for irrigation or drainage. Portugese surnames share many of the
features of Spanish surnames, in particular Arabic and Visigothic influence. A notable feature of Portugese surnames is the class of religious names referring to festivals of the church or attributes of the Virgin Mary. One respect in which Portugese names differ
from those of the rest of the Iberian peninsular, is that some were adopted at a comparatively late date and honour saints who did not give rise to surnames in other
languages. Portugese names typically have the ending 'eiro'. The name is also spelt RIGAUD. During the 17th century surnames were brought to Britain, North America and southern Africa by French Huguenot exiles. The Huguenots were French Protestants, and in 1572 large numbers of them were massacred in Paris on the orders of Queen Catherine de'Medici. Many of the survivors sought refuge in England and elsewhere. Although the Edict of Nantes (1598) officially guaranteed religious toleration, persecution continued, and the Edict was revoked by Louis XIV in 1685. It was then the trickle of emigration
became a flood. Many migrated to England, while others joined groups of Dutch Protestants settling around the Cape of Good Hope. Others sailed across the Atlantic to establish
themselves in North America. A notable member of the name was Hyacinthe RIGAUD (1659-1743) the French portrait painter born in Perpignan. He settled in Paris in 1681 as
a portrait painter to the French Court. His portrait of Louis XIV in full robes (1701) is in the Louvre. In the Middle Ages the Herald (old French herault) was an officer whose duty it was to proclaim war or peace, carry challenges to battle and messages between sovereigns;
nowadays war or peace is still proclaimed by the heralds, but their chief duty as court functionaries is to superintend state ceremonies, such as coronations, installations, and to grant arms. Edward III (1327-1377) appointed two heraldic kings-at-arms for south and
north, England in 1340. The English College of Heralds was incorporated by Richard III in 1483-84.

Rego Coat of ARMS -Gules on a bend or a heart in flames issuant proper pierced overall in bend sinister by a sword point in chief proper on a chevron argent three mullets azure
ORIGIN -PORTUGAL
Hello Luis, it looks like you are the first to reply. Join the list and be the first other than me of course. Tell you friends so we can get some communications going on the list. I also applied to be administrator of this board as we didn't have one so that the list and board can work together.

My grandfather was also named Jose Rego his mother's maiden name was Rodriguez. In the US they were always confused by the second last name. My grandfather was born in Galicia Spain, but during my father's last days I told him that the Rego name was Portuguese and he told me oh yes, my father spoke Portuguese. So now a new direction to go in. My grandfather had two sisters that moved to Argentina to raise their families so I too have relatives in South America that I do not know of. On the list I will post what I know of my family. Maybe we are long lost cousins.
Melody Rego Lemons de Jimenez

My grandfather's name was Jose Rego Rodrigues, Rodrigues being his second last name or mother's maiden name. He also was from Galicia, Foz, Lugo area. he came to the US in 1909 and worked in the cigar factories of Cuesta Rey. He had a brother Jesus who came to America also but went back in the 1960s to live. He had two sisters Josefa and Ramona that stayed in spain and a Sister Angelita that moved to Argentina. My grandparents had two children, Vinicio Rego (my father) and Olga (living) who only had one son so I am the last of our line of Regos. Rego is a Portuguese name, and my father mentioned that his father spoke the language. This is all I know of the Rego family.
