The Jordan Advocate
July 13, 1883
Pg. 4 Col. 2

On Tuesday evening of last week, while walking along the railroad track, near their home, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Read were overtaken by a passenger train. They are both quite aged and infirm, and as they did not seem to realize their danger, the engineer applied the brakes and had nearly stopped the train, when they stepped off the track. Supposing that they were out of the way, the engineer started up again, but the old lady remained so near the track that the pilot beam struck her, knocking her down and breaking her arm between the elbow and shoulder.
The train was again stopped and the injured woman was picked up by the train men. She did not appear to be badly hurt, however, and walked to the house without assistance, but when her arm was examined it was found to be badly broken, the splintered bones protruding through the flesh.
Dr. Mulholland was called, the broken arm was set, and the sufferer was made as comfortable as possible, but she gradually sank under the shock and on Tuesday morning she died.
Deceased was 67 years of age, and with her husband and family came to this township over eighteen years ago. The funeral was held on Wednesday, at the family residence.
