Rackett Dwellings in Montauk

I am not related to Rackett, but while hiking in Hither Woods in Montauk became interested in the family. There is a map of the area showing dwellings for Minnie Rackett, Lawson & Redmond. We tried to find the dwellings and found Redmond & Lawsons, but not Minnie Rackett. I believe it is just buried under the trees & brush. It was very sad so see these buildings "ruins" not marked and buried under the brush. The ones we found were so over grown and not marked . We were interested in finding out who Minnie Rackett was . I tried to find some Montauk historical information and haven't found anything, I was wondering if many someone here might have the history or story. Thank you.

We had the good program, but stopped after getting most of the Seiffert family info. They want us to spend the big bucks again. Not a member. Just an FYI, it appears that Maureen's grandfather may have been in the same National Guard Unit out of Brooklyn during WWI, as Grandpa Rackett!!!. Still trying to track down other data.....interesting if true.

Hi Frank...(Butch) What are you trying to find out ? Were you able to see my tree on ancestry? I have the Rackett side traced back to the 1500-1600's in England. Funny that everything that was told a family gatherings I have proven as true!! Amazing without the use of computers in those days. Just word of mouth from Grandma and Grandpa. I belive that I listed you within the Rackett children under your mother's name. Connect to Family Trees and look up the Rackett Family or George Rackett Jr Family Tree. Call me for any further info.
Re: PARENTS WERE FROM BERLIN GERMANY

The oral tradition of my family stated that" Three brothers left France because of religion. One stayed in Germany one went to Holland, then America, and the third fled to England." Our ancestor was Heinrick N. Raque. There is a large group with the name Raque in the Louisville, Ky. area and all of the groups seem to have come from an area near Loraine and Germany. The issue is the fact that no one has produced any documentation that ties everthing togather. It would be interesting if someone has something on the subject.

To begin with, as I mentioned previously, the Brewster line comes through HANNAH [7] BRADLEY, wife of Benjamin [4] Rackett.

Hannah was born ca. 1732-4 (?) probably at Souhthold NY and died before 1811, as she is not mentioned in Benjamin Rackett's will probated that year. She m. 07 Apr 1757 (NYG&B RECORD [hereafter NYGBR] 51:207 and Salmon Records:92) to Benjamin Rackett, son of John [3] and Mehitable (Young?) Rackett. They had traceable children: 1. Noah who m. Experience "Penny" Brown, 2. Abraham who m. Hannah Vail and 3. Louisa/Lois who m'd John M. Rackett (son of Jonathan [4] Rackett and a cousin). Early Census records suggest that there may have been other children, including the Benjamin bp. 24 Nov 1767 at 1st Church, Southhold. My husband's line comes through Noah Rackett.

Hannah Bradley was the dau. of:
Jonathan [6] Bradley b. Southold after 1700 (NYGBR 51,207) d.
Well, at least we're keeping the Rackett Message Board alive! And, except for a few years (and the fact that I am not a Rackett descendant, although I AM a Brewster descendant myself!) we are practically twins. I turned 73 on the 2nd!

Isn't it a mild form of "he--" to have a birthday on or about Labor Day weekend when you're a child? Never a birthday party in your grade school class, because school hadn't started yet!

I am currently baking cokies for my "younger" son (48) because he is "hosting" a BD party for me tomorrow! I have already made my birthday cake and the potato salad. I always have to make the potato salad!

I will check some other things on Monday and probably post another message here, so that others know what the Mayflower line is.

I have two overloaded 4 inch notebooks on the Racketts, up to about 1900, when I quit looking nd file folders all over the place! This was all "gathered" 15 to 20 years before there was anything like Ancestry, so I did it all the hard way!

Hang tight.... and have a good weekend!

I was trying to give you my direct e-mail, but the message board says I did something "invalid."
And I thought all the Racketts just vanished as I started learning about my family history. Bette, you are my hero and so is Carolee for getting me started !!! If you look up my tree under George H. Rackett, Jr.,you will see how for I have come since I started in January.I do go back to John (1st), but I'm still looking for the tie to Isle of Mann, England, and Alexander Pope, if any. Also, very proudly, you can track on my father's side, back to the Brewsters, father and son of the Mayflower. I was always told this as a child, (just turned 70 Sept 1). I meant to Email you from an address you gave to another person on another site but didn't.Don't know who Carolee is, but she lit the spark.

Clearly, it has been months since I checked the message boards! Did you get any additional information from Carolee, perhaps directly, rather than on the Board?

If not, I can probably take you all the way back to John [1] Rackett and I can also give you the Brewster lineage. That actually comes in with the marriage of Benjamin [4] Rackett to Hannah BRADLEY. Hannah was the Brewster descendant. My husband joined the Mayflower Society on that line, which is what got me "involved" with the Rackett research. The first 5 generations of my research were published in the "New York Genealogical and Biographical RECORD" in in 1995 and 1996. (Mercy, that was 15 years ago!)

Bette Innes Bradway

Hi, Carolee, I'm amazed at how you found this information as quickly as you did. My cousin and I have been trying to find this info for a long time. Only now that I truly have the time have I concentrated on this task. My goal is to give my grandchildren some insight as to where they came from. when you mentioned George Rackett being an 8th generation decendant of John Rackett, I presume you mean the John Rackett who was a descendant of the Brewster of Mayflower fame. I do truly thank you for your input.
GHRackett

OK, I just wondered how you fit into the scheme of things! I probably have all the info on your family that's appropriate, in order to protect YOUR privacy, which is VERY, VERY IMPORTANT these days!

Thanks for responding! I'm glad you finally found the Rackett info. If you ever decide you would like to join the Society of Mayflower Descendants, let me know. You'd have to provide the later documentation, but much of the lineage is already done for you. The NY Mayflower Society has Colonies that meet in Albany and Buffalo. (You mentioned you lived somewhere in NY.) Not very many Rackett descendants have ever joined - two sisters years ago (both deceased), my husband and one other Rackett cousin are it!

Bette Bradway

Nathanial Rackett

Nathaniel was the son of Samuel [4] (Jonathan [3], John [2,1] and Rhoda (Youngs) Rackett. Samuel b. 9 May 1748 in Southold, Suffolk Co. NY, d. 28 Dec 1825 in Orange Co. NY. Rhoda b. 14 Sep 1753 Southold, d. 4 Dec 1818, dau. of Silas [5] and Martha (Vail) Youngs (Gideon [4,3], Capt. Joseph [2], Rev. Christopher [1] Youngs).

The Bible record that covers your early Orange Co. branch of the family ended up in the Virginia State Library and is called the "Rackett-Webb-Leber Family Bible Record." (I have a photocopy of it, although some of it's a bit difficult to read.)

Can you get to a library that has the "NY Genealogical and Biographical RECORD?" If so, you'll find much more on the Rackett ancestry in my (several part) article on the family than I can provide here. The "Record" is a major genealogical quarterly (it has been published for over 130 years) and should be available in any reasonably sized genealogical library. Other published genealogies and Suffolk Co. NY sources will give you further ancestry on some of the women in your line.

(Mrs.) Bette Innes Bradway, CG (Certified Genealogist)

Racketts

I have a Roy C. Rackett b. Apr 1884 (per 1900 VA Census), 5th of 8 children of Nathaniel [7] and Margaret Ella (Knauf) Rackett. Nathaniel [7] was b. 19 Jan 1849 in Orange Co. NY and d. 7 Jan 1936 in Richmond VA. He prob. m. in the Richmond area, as Margaret Ella was b. in Richmond 7 Jul 1850 or 51 and d. there 24 Feb 1905.

Nathaniel was the son of Samuel Havens [6]Rackett b. 26 May 1823 (Bible Rec., prob. in Orange Co. NY), d. after the 1880 VA Census and his wife, Martha Webb who. d. 6 Oct 1875 (Bible Rec.). They m. in Orange Co. NY 6 Jan 1848 (Chester Presby. Church Rec.). In 1880, Samuel was living in Fairfield Dist., Henrico Co. VA when the census was taken. This group, who migrated from Southold, Long Island to Orange Co. NY is the only branch of the Rackett family, that I am aware of, who went to VA in this "early" time period. (Others of the surname may have gone there later on.)

Samuel Havens Rackett's ancestry is Nathaniel [5] Rackett and Susan Thompson,
Samuel [4] Rackett and Rhoda Youngs, Jonathan [3] Rackett and Hannah King, John [2],[1] Rackett.

This family "originated" in Southold, Suffolk Co. Long Island, NY. See my article in the NYGBR, mentioned in a previous posting here, for more on first 5 gens.

Continuation of this material is from a Family Bible, correspondence and notes of the late Mr. E. C. Thompson, Jr. (who had a collateral line through the Thompsons) and Roland Nathaniel Rackett, Jr., whose father (Roland Sr.) was the next younger sibling of the aforementioned Roy C. Rackett. I have NO FURTHER INFO on Roy or his family (if any). Correspondence was in ca. 1987.

Bette Innes Bradway, CG

That would be GREAT if you could up-date me on the later VA generations. Although we only published the first 5-6 generations of the Racketts in the NYG&B RECORD, I have many lines that extend way beyond that. I would ask, however, that you send please it directly to me at <bibcg@juno.com>. I am still having problems getting on the Internet (my computer, NOT the server) and now my husband's computer also seems to be doing strange things! Every time I answer a Message Board, the notice of mail comes in on my Juno address on my computer. Then I have to switch rooms to Phil's computer in order to respond.

Just "for the record," my husband is the Rackett descendant, not me. It's another of his family lines I got all tangled up in, while trying to prove some of his ancestry.

Bette Bradway

I finally got back to NY for the weekend from Plymouth, MA and actually had time to look for and found my packed up Rackett notesbooks (which I decided to bring back with me)!

According to my "records," Porter Curtis Rackett's wife's name was Nellie Grant UDELL and she was born 28 Sep 1866 (or Sept 1861? per 1900 Census?), dau. of George E. Udell (who was the son of Charles Udell) and Esther Elizabeth Tuthill (dau. of Samuel and Esther [Baker] Tuthill).

Nellie's siblings (Udell) were: George Elbert b. 1873, Harry LeRoy b. 1874 and Mary Ann b. 1878. George E. Udell (Nellie's father) was b. 28 Jun 1841 in Smithtown NY and d. 1923.

"Tuttle/Tuthill" calls her "Hettie."

Please note that I have not been on JUNO for at least 2 years and cannot seem to get the e-mail on this message to correct.
Rackett family

I'm very new at looking up my family background, since I have no living relatives to ask. Apparently, my Rackett family come to Orange NJ via Long Island. As a little boy (about 60 years ago)I remember my grandfather (John Walton Rackett) telling stories about the Racketts, saying we were a Mayflower family back to the Brewsters. My grandfather grew up in the Orient Point area of Long Island, and possibly had family in Sag Harbor, Greenport, and the surrounding area. I have tried looking him up on the Long Island Ancestry Site with no luck. He had a sister named Bess Rackett Feurstein, and two brothers, George (Teen) Rackett, and another brother whose name I do not know, but who had a son Edward Rackett of NJ. My grandfather married Olive Francis? Osborn of, I assume Long Island, who had a sister Violet Osborn Luke, a brother Bill Osborn, and a brother who became Mayor of Aleriya??, Ohio in the 50's. I was also told that we were related to Richard Smythe of Smithtown fame.(That's no Bull). I have been trying to look up info on the internet with many dead-ends. My grandmother Olive Rackett was a member of the DAR in NJ and I was told that her relative of Revolutionary an Civil war fame was Gen. Winfield Scott. Another name within the family, that I recall, was Tuthill (Tuttle?),also from Long Island. If any Racketts or other interested parties can provide more Info, I would be grateful. GH Rackett, JR.

Racketts in Virginia

I'm searching for ties to the Rackett family in Virginaia. They supposedly owned a lumber company, resided in Richmond, and a park is named after one of them, Roy.Mother father Julia (Parater) and Steven had children May, Francis, Virginia and Roy, maybe more.
One discrepancy lies in the park. I think I could use this to latch on to more details. Either the park is named after Roy or Parater. If anyone knows of any Racketts that ended up in Virginia, drop me a line, I'd really appreciate it since I'm coming up on dead ends.
Thanks!
April

Thank you so much for all this information! I had found tons of information on the internet about the Racketts of Long Island, but none of it could relate to the few lines I had traced back already. You've really done me such a huge favor by filling in a gaping hole in our family tree.
If you'd like, I can post the few descending lines from the point where you stopped, most of whom are still living.

I just typed in one of the family names (Silas Youngs) on yahoo.com and it brought up this page which is INCREDIBLY sensible...it even mentions Rev. Christopher as the founder of the Southold community. Well, it is a stretch, for those of you looking through the matriarchal lines as well as the men you might find it interesting that we may have originated in the Southwold, Suffolk ENGLAND area. Rhoda Youngs married Samuel Rackett in the Southold, Suffolk NY area after her father (Silas5, married to Martha Vail) and grandfather (Gideon4) and great grandfather (Gideon3) and great great Grandfather (Capt. Joseph2) settled it after the great great great grandfather Rev. Christopher Youngs1 (Younge) did. How cool is that!?
Check it out, very informative...http://members.tripod.com/~ntgen/bw/youngs_index.html

Dear Bette, I don't if I had the correct address or not, I tried to send you a photo of Jonathan W, Rackett's Civil War Discharge record he had made for hisw wife and children. I've asked one of my daughters, still on Long Island to look into the Southold Historical center. I want to thank you again for your information. If I did things right I've gotten back to 1712, and waiting to hear from her if i'm the right track. If you didn't get the photo and woulod like to see it I'd be glad to resend it.

On a recent visit to Middletown, New York my wife's coussin showed us some things she had of their Grandmother. One of which was a document( I took a photo of ) her Greartgrand Father gave to his wife and children., his discharge from the Union Army (Civil War). I also took a photo of Wedding Certificate that was their Grandmother's. When my mother-in--law died we managed to save a few hand wriitten and typed notes about the RACKETT family that had been written by Grandmother Almenda (RACKETT) Goble , my wife's granny. The list she wrote started with:
Marriages
Joseph W. RACKETT
and
Rebecca Van Tuyle
June 13,1837
Offsping Jonathon W. RACKETT b.June,12th,1841
Under Births it starts with :
Joseph W. RACKETT Grandfather Aug.12th,1789
and goes on to list the rest of the family down though the years my mother-in-law add my name and my childrens names. I was wondering if anyone knows these names. I would like to hear from anybody that might have any knowledge of this family or would like the information I have.

Hi, I'm new at family research, however, I've been trying to track down my grandfather's (John Walton Rackett)info. I believe he was born and grew up on eastern Long Island. I remember seeing many Rackett gravesites in Orient Point. I also remember when he was alive, mentioning family in Sag Harbour, Greenport, and Montauk. He married Olive Francis Osborne and they had Viola, George Sr., John W.Jr.,Minnie, Ida,Francis, and Willis. They had moved from L.I. to Orange, NJ.My father was George Sr. My grandfather had a brother George (Teen)H. Rackett and a sister Bess. I believe their mother's maiden name was Walton. Also, I remember being told that my grandfather was related to Richard Smythe of Smithtown fame, and my grandmother was related to Gen. Winfield Scott and is half Cherokee. Also, I was told that my grandfather was a Mayflower decendant through his Brewster lineage. I remember receiving Mayflower Society Info but never responded. Hope this livens up the Racket blog site.

Joseph William Rackett

Greetings,
I am seeking any descendants of Joseph William Rackett and Alice Maud Mary Rackett (nee Squibb). Have just discovered that Alice died in Los Angeles on the 13th November 1947. They had three children Annie Kate b.1892 James Henry Frank b.1896 and Charlotte Florence b. 1899. One of the descendants visited Josephs parents house in Ryde Isle of Wight during WW2 in the hope of seeing the family home but it seems to have been an inconvenient moment for the great aunt who lived there and opened the door but did not even welcome him or invite him in. This shameful act was condemned by the rest of the family when they knew but were unable to establish contact ever after (hardly surprising). Whilst I am several generations later I am keen to try to make amends.
Any information on possible connections with this family would be much appreciated

The New York Genealogical and Biographical RECORD is a quarterly genealogical publication that can be found in almost all genealogical libraries, but not in the usual public library. Where is German NY? Maybe I can come up with a library somewhere near you that will have the periodicals. Or, if you want to contact me directly and pay for copies and postage, I can send you copies of the material.

When I wrote the Rackett article, I covered the two Noah Racketts (and, of course, lots of other Racketts, to about the 6th generation). The two Noahs are my husband's direct line and they also lead to a William Brewster Mayflower line.

Bette Innes Bradway, CG
