I am interested in information on my GG Grandmother's sister, Julia Simson who married a "Raab". Apparently, he died after being married a very short time. I was told that he may have been from Richmond, VA... although I have found a number of Raabs in the old Philadelphia census. If you have any idea who this Raab family could be, please contact me.

Julia Simson married RM Raab (Robert Meyer) in 1861 in Philadelphia. RM moved to Burlington, Iowa and was listed in the 1866 city directory. His business was initially called RM Raab & Co., but soon changed to RM Raab & Bro., with his brother Emanuel Raab. They were merchant tailors, manufacturers & wholesale & retail dealers in clothing and gents furnishing goods. In 1883, Emanuel moved to Richmond, VA to join his nephew, Leon L Strause in running a whole leaf tobacco warehouse. Both Raab brothers continued to be invested in each others business ventures, & they and their wives bought & developed at least 25 residential and commercial properties in Burlington between 1873 & 1906. RM & Julia had no offspring, and RM died in Burlington in 1899. Julia returned to Philadelphia sometime in the early 1900s. I am not related to this family, but live in Emanuel Raab's 1878 home, which I'm restoring & researching. The home RM & Julia built for themselves is no longer standing, although I think after RM's death, Julia may have briefly moved into another fine house they had built next door, which is still in beautiful condition. There is a nice bio & portrait of RM Raab in "Portrait & Biographical Album of Des Moines County, Iowa" published by Acme Publishing in Chicago, 1888.
